Cornerback Asante Samuel left late in this morning's practice with a hamstring injury. Samuel wasn't wearing ice and didn't seem terribly concerned later, as he exited the field house. The hamstring did not have ice or a wrap.

A source told the Daily News this afternoon that the Eagles do not believe the injury is serious or will require Samuel to miss significant time.

"I'm too old for this!" Samuel said, presumably referring to two-a-days.

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs did not participate with an illness. Asked about the illness he said, "bad cereal." He said he would back at practice tomorrow.

BETHLEHEM -- They are the duo to watch, when the first team offense isn't on the field.

Backup quarterback Michael Vick and rookie wideout Riley Cooper are money in the bank for the second-team offense. Granted, they're usually playing against the second-team defense, here at training camp, but they still put on an impressive show.

This morning, Vick found Cooper on a quick, sharp slant, corner Geoffrey Pope unable to intercede. Then Vick tried a quick out to Cooper, but corner Macho Harris, back from hamstring troubles, jumped the route. Harris got his hands on the ball, diving, and popped it up in the air -- where Cooper caught it, and took off down the sideline.

Last Friday, in the Eagles' preseason opener against Jacksonville, Vick and Cooper connected on a 46-yard bomb, right after entering the game.

"The first day I got here, he came up to me and introduced himself," Cooper said today, when asked about Vick. "His agent (Joel Segal) is my agent. He kind of was looking out for me,and helped me out a lot. We kind of had that bond."

Cooper's previous quarterback was the most straight-arrow guy ever, Tim Tebow at Florida. Vick has a somewhat different public image.

"Joel told me all about him," said Cooper, who said he had no reservations about bonding with the guy who went to prison for running a dogfighting operation. "Joel said 'great guy, stands for all the right things, do anything for you. Great family guy.' That's what Joel told me. I trust Joel, and I saw it for myself. He's a good dude.

"He throws a real good long ball, and those short-intermediate routes on a dart, you know? He's the real deal."

"He understands the game, he knows how to get open, and he's a big target," Vick said of Cooper. "He kind of reminds me of Brian Finneran" the ex-Villanova star and one-time Eagle, who played with Vick in Atlanta. "He catches the ball real well.Might be a tad bit faster than Brian, but they're very similar."

*No full pads and no real hitting this morning, lots of pass plays to talk about. Kevin Kolb connected nicely with DeSean Jackson on a TD bomb down the right sideline, Asante Samuel covering, 7-on-7.

*Same setup, excellent leaping catch by Hank Baskett on the left sideline, from Michael Vick.

*Nate :Lawrie, buried pretty deep on the tight end depth chart, reached up to snag a pass deep down the middle from Mike Kafka.

*When the starters played the starters 11-on-11, the defense again seemed to have the upper hand. First Kolb missed Jason Avant deep down the left side. Then Baskett dropped a pass. Kolb went to Shady McCoy on a pretty deep running back route, but Ernie Sims had strong coverage all the way and McCoy couldn't make the catch.

*Kolb rolled right and hit Jackson again, underneath Samuel.

*With Kolb rolling the other way, Sims seized the opportunity to chuck Baskett to the ground, away from the ball.

*Geoffrey Pope picked Kafka on a rollout. But then Kafka exacted revenge on a flea-flicker, hitting Chad Hall ofor a deep touchdown over Pope, who lost a fight for the ball.

More injury news on the final day of public workouts at Lehigh: Tight end Cornelius Ingram was limited in practice, did some light work because of a continuing knee issue.

Running back LeSean McCoy, who missed practice yesterday, with a quad contusion, returned today.

Guard Todd Herremans rotated in.

Running back Mike Bell (hammy) remains sidelined. And for the numerically inclined, new safety Anthony Scirrotto is wearing No. 47.
