When Ed Sabol was running NFL Films, he had a saying that he used to tell the people that worked for him: finish like a pro.

Earlier today, it was Sabol who finished like a pro when the 95-year-old NFL Films founder was selected the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

``Today is a good ending,’’ Big Ed said over the phone from his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. ``I’m very proud. I’m especially proud of the people I worked with, people who worked so hard and so well. This is for them.’’

Sabol was one of 7 people who will be inducted into Canton next summer. Joining him will be four other modern-era selections, Deion Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Richard Dent and Shannon Sharpe, and 2 senior committee nominees, Les Richter and Chris Hanburger.

The list of 15 modern-era finalists, including Sabol, was reduced to 10 following 6 ½ hours of discussions on all of the candidates by the 44 selectors.

Eliminated after the first cut were running back Jerome Bettis, wide receivers Tim Brown and Cris Carter and defensive ends Chris Doleman and Charles Haley. Bettis was in his first year of eligibility.

The 10 survivors after a vote of the 44 selectors: Sabol, Sanders, Faulk, Sharpe, Dent, center Dermontti Dawson, defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, running back Curtis Martin, wide receiver Andre Reed and offensive tackle Willie Roaf.

Another vote was taken that reduced the survivors to 5.
