SI predicts Birds will miss playoffs
Daily News staff
Tis the sesason for prognistication -- the Daily News predictions will be coming later this week -- but we are always interested when the rather large Sports Illustrated NFL preview lands in the mailbox. That happened yesterday, with a big piece about quarterbacks on the cover.
Inside, SI's Peter King predicts that the Eagles will go 9-7, finish third in the NFC East and miss the playoffs.
King has Dallas at 12-4, the Giants at 10-6 and then the Redskins in last place at 6-10.
He has both NFC wild card coming from the NFC North, with the Vikings and Packers -- both at 10-6, behind Chicago's 11-5 -- making the postseason. Atlanta (10-6) and Seattle (9-7) round out the NFC field.
King projects the Bears will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl and lose to -- who else? -- the Patriots in Miami.
As for the Eagles, here is the analysis about the Birds, although this was not written by King. "After facing the tough AFC North in '08, against which Donovan McNabb had a 65.6 passer rating, Philly gets the AFC West, in which all four defenses ranked in the bottom 10. Throw in some suspect NFC South secondaries, and McNabb should exceed last year's career high of 3,195 passing yards. The juiciest game on the schedule? Week 13, when Michael Vick returns to Atlanta."

With losing Dawk and JJ I hate to say I think they are right. Earl J
I dont see Dallas at 12-4. P Even
It has nothing to do with losing Dawkins, who ran for the money and is over the hill or with losing JJ it has to do with not having an O-Line or a front seven worthy of being in the NFL. elbobbo- 11 - 5
Is King ever right? Overpaid Blowhard. allen_jones
So they face the worst secondaries in the league, analysis for why they will MISS the playoffs? I'm not convinced the Birds are playoff-bound by any stretch, but for very different reasons (i.e. is there any real stopper or dominating presence on defense? who exactly is this team's leader, the guy with the killer instinct who will demand excellence and step on the opposition's back when given the chance?) Actually, the idiot King had the Giants at 12-4 and the Cowgirls at 10-6....I can't see that happening... lycralaz
I'm an Eagles fan, but 9-7 sounds about right for Dallas and the Birds; unfortunately it is likely that the Giants running game and D (not Eli) will help NY get a couple more wins than that. M-star
Quarterbacks opposing the Eagles will have a field day against the Eagles linebackers. Too slow against the pass, not big enough against the run. The Eagles did not upgrade their pass rush, which will make pass defense even more difficult. Neither Quentin Demps nor Sean Jones seemed to do anything to deserve to start. Stop worrying about the offensive line and start worrying about how many times the Eagles defense is going to give up 25+ points a game. 10-6. George Jacobs

Comment removed.- I think they will be a better team offensively, but defense might be a problem due to the loss of Stewart Bradley, who was playing great at the end of last year. hey can still outscore most teams and have played their best football in December under Reid. I say they win the division and go deep into the playofs again. If McCoy, Macklin, Weaver, the Andrews Bros and Vick make solid contributions, this could actually be the year they go all the way.
We do this every year and every year big red makes it work. Slow start for sure but 10 wins and a wildcard berth are my picks... Grazman

4-12 and Father of the year Andy Reid is not renewed. The Great Enabler, Jeff Lurie and Ron Mexico Banner will regret signing the dog killer. Dr. Michael
