Roseman defends himself
Paul Domowitch, Daily News NFL Columnist
Michael Silver, a pro football columnist for Yahoo! Sports, raked Eagles general manager, Howie Roseman over the coals pretty good earlier this week.
Silver suggested that Roseman is the main reason the Eagles haven’t been able to trade quarterback Donovan McNabb yet. Said that Roseman ``wants to make a name for himself’’ by making a ``sweet deal’’ the for 33-year-old quarterback. Said rival NFL executives view him as a ``shakedown artist’’ and aren’t answering his calls.
``Roseman is the guy trying to prove to the rest of the league that he belongs,’’ Silver wrote. ``He seems to be on a mission to prove how shrewd he is to his peers.’’ Later in the column, Silver quoted an unnamed league GM saying, ``Roseman is trying to be too smart for his own good.’’
All of this, of course, ignores the fact that head coach Andy Reid is king of all things football at the NovaCare Complex and that Roseman reports to Big Red. But hey ...
I caught up with Roseman earlier today and asked him for his reaction to some of the things in Silver’s column.
* On the overall column: ``That’s part of the business. I understand that the guy’s got a job to do. To me, if you keep your eye on the ball and you get the best talent and you win a lot of games, all of that stuff is just on the sidelines. It’s my responsibility to make sure we do that and work with coach (Andy Reid) and get the right players.’’
* On the ``shakedown artist’’ claim: ``We always try to be fair with people. I’m not worried about it. We’ve made trades with Tampa and Seattle this offseason. We’ll probably make another couple of trades. I haven’t sensed that. I think this is a unique situation. I think he’s talking about the quarterbacks. I understand the perception. We like our quarterbacks. We think we have three really good players.’’
* On Silver’s claim that he ``seems to be on a mission to prove how shrewd he is to his peers’’: ``There are people who don’t know me in the league. I understand that. Perception sometimes becomes reality if you don’t know someone. I do the same thing. I look forward to the opportunity to talk to more people and get to know more and more people in the league. That’s the only way really to do this. I’m comfortable in who I am and what I’m trying to do. I’m certainly not trying to prove to anyone that I’m smarter than they are or trying to pull something over on anyone.
``Anyone who knows me knows relationships are very important to me. Relationships within the building and outside the building. I will do whatever I can to make sure people feel good when they’re dealing with us and dealing with me.’’
It's funny how sports reporting has become like Hollywood reporting. Reporters these days make up all kinds of stories to pump up the drama. The common people love drama. It's all just entertainment, right? All in good fun, right. Whatever. soulman386

If the writer's sources are true comments, e.g shakedown artiist, then Howie's ability to conduct business on behalf of the Eagles is severly diminished short and near term. Not a good way to come out of the gate. lerze77
cliff lee for eagle GM ingy9
I'm sure relationships ARE important to Roseman, as long as he is the superior and all others are made subordinates. His shrewdness will be put to the test when Rosenhaus comes calling for DeSean Jackson's new contract. 76erfn
``Roseman is trying to be too smart for his own good.’’ Good hire. He fits in perfectly with this arrogant, smug, front office. Another loser. ANDY-IS-FAT
It's the local reporter's job to put the new GM in a good light this maintaining steady access to the information necessary to do a beat writer's job. As evidenced by the grey beards of the managers of this blog, they have that down- providing a platform for Roseman to spin. jtj10
Listen up! News flash! A league insider reports that McNabb will be traded to the Sixers for Eddie Jordan, who will then be traded for Cliff Lee, who then will be traded for rampaging bloodthirsty flash mob, who then will be traded for a Geno's "Speak English" bumpersticker and some cheese fries from Pat's. Leegles
They hand out columns for Yahoo Sports to anyone who wants them. Could not care less what someone for Yahoo Sports had to say. Anyone with a brain cell knows that Reid and Banner call the shots and Reid has the ultimate say. Reid has a lot of friends around the league either as former Eagles coaches and former Packers coaches and others. Any of these teams could get Reid on the phone if they wanted to talk trades for QBs. Look at the Ellis Hobbs trade last season. Reid just called Belichek during the draft and they had a deal a few minutes later. The road to trades with the Eagles doesn't go through Roseman. JimG- Silver is a terrible writer, a hack. Their is a reason Sports Illustrated fired him and he's now working for Yahoo!
Howie's just trying to fit in with the "Gold Standard" Luriesucks
I think its much more likely that Silver's comments are completely fabricated to have something to write about. Rod72
