Was Castillo quote on linebackers misinterpreted?

POSTED: Monday, August 22, 2011, 7:59 AM

That quote yesterday where Juan Castillo said his young linebackers "will be ready to win the Super Bowl" has gotten a lot of play, here and elsewhere. Problem is, I just listened to the tape again, and I'm not sure that's exactly what Castillo said, or at least, what he meant to say.

Here's the way the Eagles' transcript punctuates Castillo's remarks: “The linebackers will be ready to win the Super Bowl. Remember, it takes 16 weeks, and then really whoever is playing their best during the playoffs. So when you look at it there’s time to develop."

But on the tape, here is what I hear: "The linebackers will be ready. To win the Super Bowl, remember, it takes 16 weeks, and then, really, whoever is playing their best during the playoffs. So when you look at it, there's time to develop."

Not a huge difference, but a difference. Reminds me of that old Gene Hackman movie, "The Conversation." Google it, whippersnappers.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was a self-described "obsessed" Jets fan, growing up in Brooklyn.

He knew virtually everything about those teams in the 1980s, with Freeman McNeil, Ken O'Brien and the New York Sack Exchange.

While he is "all about the Eagles now," he allowed that his dream scenario would be the Eagles vs. the Jets in the Super Bowl, with the Eagles winning, of course.

“I would love nothing more than for the Jets and the Eagles to both get to the Super Bowl and have that excitement, then for [the Eagles] to win,” a smiling Roseman told the New York Post. “That would be the perfect happy ending for me.”

The story dubs Roseman as the "boy wonder of NFL front offices."

“He brings something to the table for us in every aspect,” team president Joe Banner said. “His understanding of the cap is better than any cap person in the league, much less any GM, and he’s a great talent evaluator. There’s nothing we do that he isn’t integrally involved in.”

Speaking of the Jets, wide receiver Plaxico Burress was back on the field last night for the first time since he was released from prison.

Burress made three catches for 66 yards and played in 29 of the Jets' 31 offensive plays in the first half. Among them was a diving 26-yard catch on a fade pattern in the corner of the end zone from Mark Sanchez.

"This is the tip of the iceberg," Burress said, according to the New York Daily News. "I'm just getting started. For me and Mark to go out there and make some of the plays that we have - I've only been practicing for three days. There is a lot of room for improvement. We left some plays out there that we should have hit. The sky is the limit."

The Jets are looking for Burress to be productive immediately so this is a good start, even if it is only the preseason.

The Eagles play the Jets in the fourth preseason game, a game in which the starters don't play. Will be interesting to see if Burress is on the field at all in that game, just to get him some more game action after his time away. Burress' practice time has been limited this summer by an ankle issue, so the better move might be to keep him off the field to avoid injury.

The new kickoff rules have gotten a lot of attention thus far in the preseason.

Eagles special teams coordinator Bobby April said he expects that teams will return about 65 percent of kickoffs and he expects that number to climb in the postseason.

April suggested more teams will take a chance at returning kicks that go deeper into the end zone, rather than taking a knee.

"The other day we returned one that was 9 yards (deep)," he said. "You’re definitely going to see people taking a shot, and that’s a big gamble because there is a real opportunity to tackle them inside the 20. You don’t want to be too stubborn.

"I think there comes a point where it’s a little bit like waving the white flag when you take a knee. ... I think that ruffles people the wrong way, and people just on their competitiveness that say, ‘I might lose this battle but I’m not taking this.’ I’m pretty positive that people will start to have that mentality because people have started to bring them out deeper than ever before this preseason. I don’t think that’ll change."

Either the media really hates the Eagles which I am sure most do or they just don't have a clue. I heard what he said on Eagles.com and it was two different sentences and of course the media put it all together just to see some more negative responses and hate. This hack is no different.

Comments like the one that Castillo just spit out are the reason the NFL started the Wonderlic test. Vince Young had a lofty 6 out of 50 correct and thats his excuse for the "Dream Team" comment. Castillo missed the test, but I bet Juan admires Vince for getting so many right. That would be his excuse for saying (before the 3rd pre-season game) that the Linebackers will be ready to win the Super Bowl! Is it too late for Andy to let Washburn do the talking for the Defense?

    frank,

Vick grew up in edskins country and then played for Atlanta. He's a carpet bagger too, i guess. 95% of players grew up rooting for another team other than their current team. Once you're an employee, you root for your team.

JoeB compliments his boy wonder.....the kid rose from the mailroom because Joe wants someone else to do the paperwork....You can bet Joe makes the decisions....and to say that he is the best in the league on cap matters (after all he is Joe's personal protege ) What else would you expect him to say......and how can he be the best talent evaluator since this franchise has won NOTHING.....what does that make the Packer's, the Sait's and the Patriot's guys.....Joe you are an idiot and once again have shown your arrogance and inability to grasp the idea that Winning the Super Bowl is the only measure you and your boy will be judged by..........Little Napolean strikes again with small insignifcant comments......Sad

heres an interesting article on wonderlic scores. someone mentioned Young had a 6. I know he scored badly, maybe a whopping EIGHT. and was allowed to retake it, and got a 15, which placed him 29th out of 30 starting QB's. The average wonerlic score for all players is like an 18. a 15 is low. QB's need higher scores and average 25-30. a QB with a 15 is PATHETIC. McNabb had a 14, WORST OF ALL STARTERS. Vince had an 8 the first time he took it. also Vick only had a 20. If you look at SB winning QB's they all have around 30. manning, brady, manning rogers, all 39,33,32,28. McNabb and young with 14 and 15 is GARBAGE. Vick with 20 isnot very good either. under pressure, against good defenses you will see that 20, or that 14 or 15. Its not good.

I think the distinction in Juan's quote is huge. I forget who wrote that story, but that is just irresponsible, an obvious attempt to create controversy out of a sensible statement. This article has multiple credits, though Les seems to be the main writer, I have to give you credit for clearing that up. If you wrote the original, then I guess you did the right thing. If someone else did, that's some guts exposing your coworker like that. It makes me wonder how often liberties like this are taken evry time I read something like this.

Just found it, J. Tamari wrote the original. I hope this was an honest mistake JT, but somehow I doubt it. I'll be taking everything you write with a grain of salt from now on.

The wonderlic test is very easy...google sample wonderlic test questions and see some questions for yourself.

If any player can't get at least 80% of these questions correct, they are not very bright.

    Hey Frank,

You know what owner was from Philadelphia and was a former water boy for the Eagles?! That's right, former Eagles owner Norman Braman!! How'd that work out for Eagles' fans and players (see Reggie WHite). Your assumption that Lurie and Banner don't want to win as bad because they are not from Philly is completely idiotic. The man who sold the Eagles to Jeffrey Lurie was from Philly and was arguably the worst owner in the history of Philly sports. WHen Mike Quick retired, he presented the former with a golf bag for all he did for the team. NOT a bag with clubs, just the bag. Frank, get a clue.

I like Juan and Casey Matthews...but they're not good enough to win a super bowl. Maybe five years from now after Juan figures out what he's doing. Blame Reid for putting the team in this situation... without a good vet LB on defense. What a joke. LBs are the heart and soul of the defense.

Jimmydugan: Get a clue before you start yapping... Norman Braman was a successful car dealer in Miami, Florida for many years when he owned the Eagles...Braman also spent alot of time at his other home on the French Riviera..Like Lurie, Braman didn't really care about the Super Bowl,he cared about making millions from the Eagles.

Phillies boss David Montgomery was born and spent his entire life right here in Philly and so did Ruben Amaro, they have the deep passion for the Phillies, like the Philly fans do...because of their passion for the Phillies they care about bringing another World Series Championship to Philly.

This is a redundantly stupid headline! Castillo's comments were not misinterpreted. They were blatantly disregarded! If a real journalist "misinterpreted" Castillo's statements they way they were portrayed that person should be fired for either outright ignorance or for being a lier!
