Eagles general manager Howie Roseman acknowledged Wednesday that he tried to hire new player personnel VP Tom Gamble a year ago, when Ryan Grigson left to become the Indianapolis GM, but Roseman said Gamble wasn't ready to leave San Francisco, partly for family reasons.

This year, Roseman noted, Gamble interviewed for some GM vacancies and "the family was raring to go."

Gamble, 49, has worked in the NFL for 24 years, the last eight helping build the Super Bowl XLVII runnerup 49ers. His father, Harry Gamble, is a former Penn coach and Eagles president.

"He's been part of successful organizations. He's got incredible experience. He's seen it all," Roseman said on a conference call with reporters.

"I think it's because his passion for this city and its fanbase," Roseman said, when asked why Gamble would make what looks like a lateral move to the Eagles. Gamble grew up in Haddonfield and has a masters degree from Rowan. His first job was with the Birds, in 1988.
