Roseman addresses Eagles issues
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
MOBILE, AL. -- Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said today that though he is considering internal candidates for the vacant job of personnel chief, he might wait to fill the position until after the April draft, when contracts would expire for candidates from other organizations.
In a wide-ranging session with Daily News and Inquirer reporters between today's Senior Bowl practices, Roseman left the whole defensive coordinator situation to head coach Andy Reid, but addressed several hot-button topics.
"Just like with players, if there was an opportunity to improve ourselves, we'd look at that," Roseman said when asked about the personnel spot vacated when Ryan Grigson was hired as general manager in Indianapolis. "We're gojng to try to look there at all the options and not make any rash decisions ... We've brought in some people (over the past few years who are candidates) and we're looking at some people who can help us in the short term as well."
Former Browns and Ravens exec Phil Savage, who works with the Eagles more or less as a consultant, is in Mobile as part of the Eagles' party.
Asked to reflect on all the changes the Eagles made in last year's truncated off season, Roseman said: "I think that when you're 8-8 and you're at the Senior Bowl (instead of the Super Bowl), you obviously look back and think that there are things you could have done a different way - draft picks you'd like to have back and some signings you'd like to have back. But when you step back and look at the core of the team, the blend of youth and experience and talent, we have an opportunity to be competitive and be competitive for a long time."
Roseman hinted that the Eagles tried to address the linebacking situation during the hectic August free agent period after the lockout ended, but were unsuccessful. "It's not a buffet" where you can just pick out everything you want, he said.
Roseman said the Eagles "still have high hopes" for 2010 first-round pick Brandon Graham. He said the team wasn't surprised that Graham, a defensive end, struggled in 2011, coming back from a torn ACL and microfracture surgery. "There is a huge sense of urgency for Brandon Graham (this year). He knows that," Roseman said.
Roseman's two drafts since taking over the GM title from Tom Heckert have been widely scrutinized. He indicated he was willing to second-guess them himself, wondering if he pushed players too far up the rankings to fill needs. He said the fact that so far the Eagles have gotten more help from the bottom of their last few drafts than the top might mean they need to adjust their evaluation process.
Asked about the fact that the 9-7 Giants are in the Super Bowl, Roseman said he didn't think it was productive to wonder whether the Eagles could have mounted such a run, if they had gotten into the playoffs. He said the Giants are succeeding with the formula that has brought them success in the past -- strong quarterbacking from Eli Manning and a fierce, relentless pass rush.
Snakeplissken: took the words right out of my mouth... Howie, do us all a favor and just resign! WE DON'T WANT YOU HERE....... elfman

Typical backasswards organizational thinking. The only reason those guys are playing is because the ones in front of them were busts and left a hole. Nobody thinks that Coleman is an NFL starter or Chaney for that matter. They're just what was left over.

Cue the negadelphian onslaught of 20/20 hindsighters! Remember that Roseman is the same guy who brought us Asomugha (and others) right arond the time the Phils got Pence. He did everything the fan base has clamored for "nickles and dimes" organization to do, to open pockets for the fancy free agents. And lo and behold it's a team game that requires chemistry, adequation comfort and preparation, and a lot of luck to make it to the playoffs and beyond. Lee Evans holds on to that pass by Flacco and the Ravens are in the Super Bowl. The holder spins the laces two more inches and Cundiff sends them into OT. The Giants/Niners game could've gone either way. Leegles
You have to understand, with the defensive picks there are NFL grades and there are Eagles grades.
For instance Mike Patterson and Brod Bunkley would receive average grades at best as 1st round picks, NFL wise. However for the Eagles they would be above that because they weren't nearly so embarassing as most Eagles early picks. banned
I love my Eagles, but the first sentence tells you all you need to know about this Roseman idiot: "Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said today that though he is considering internal candidates for the vacant job of personnel chief, he might wait to fill the position until after the April draft..."
So let me get this straight: You want to have a personnel guy in place AFTER THE DRAFT IS OVER?!?!??! Who the heck is going to help evaluate players in the draft!??!? I feel another Jon Harris pick coming...

do yall remember that mccoy is a second rounder jackson 1st rounder maclin 1st rounder are those failed early picks ? please we havent hit on the stud def player but we have done a good job on off players so why keep making the same ignorant statement you saw someone else post ...the teams that are loaded are teams that have been bad for a while so they were drafting high.... 8-8 is the worst record we have had in the last few years so we have to be on point because top ten talent is long gone and your position of need might be thin in the late teens and mid twenties positive eagle
Positive Eagle: You're right (Jackson was a second-rounder, by the way) -- they have done a pretty good job hitting on offensive picks, and missing on defensive ones. It just hurts that they've been so CLOSE to those defensive picks, and missed -- like not taking Earl Thomas, when everyone on the planet knew that safety was their biggest need... here's a top-rated safety sitting there for them, and they bypass him to take another bust of a defensive lineman. The litany of defensive picks wasted is legion, particularly the top-four round ones.
We're passionate, and we want the team to draft well and perform well, and it hurts when they do things that are so obviously wrong -- objectively, obviously wrong. They had to trade for Nnamdi and DRC, trade for Asante, because they haven't managed to draft a decent corner for YEARS. Look at the defensive line -- Cole's an All Pro, Patterson's good-but-not-great, and who else is there? Babin, Jenkins, Dixon, Parker, Tapp -- free agent signees. Graham? Bust.
Then you see one area where ALL of the players are draft picks, and we can all agree that it's the worst-performing unit (in 2011) on the team: Linebacker.

Actually DeSean was a 2nd rounder and the article is referring to the last 2 seasons of missed 1-3 rounders cdjones34
He has no business being a gm of a professional football team. He would still be an associate at a law firm. He is just one of jeff an joe's rich boy frat buddies. jtcigar
critias: Graham isn't a bust. Allen isn't a bust. Both players had knee surgery in their rookie years and came back to contribute a bit this year. By the END of next year we'll be able to evaluate them. If Earl Thomas or Piere-Paul came here and got freakin' INJURED you'd call them busts too.
Eagles fans, at least the ones who comment on here, are "passionate" to the point of mental deficiency. LET'S GO SIXERS! Leegles
Leegles: I didn't mention Nate Allen at all, let alone call him a bust. Graham, though? "Bust" is a subjective term, certainly. He got injured... did I miss all of the sacks and plays he made before the injury? I must have missed his playmaking ability -- you know, the "can't miss" which is supposed to accompany a first-round pick. No one in the world has seen enough in him to say he can even perform at this level -- he's small, not very quick or fast, and now his development has been slowed by injury (which, let's keep in mind, he may NEVER fully recover from). I don't wish the guy ill, not in any sense of the word. Few people would be happier than me if he turned out to be a beast. I wish I saw that as even a remote possibility, but I don't. That's my opinion. I wouldn't think he was a draft bust if they took him in the fourth round, but they didn't. And the fault doesn't like with Mr. Graham, it lies with the so-called talent evaluators at the NovaCare Complex.

Oh good. We're going to be "competitive". Competitive means you don't get blown off the field by the other team. Some may say 8-8 is competitive. "Competitive" is a long way from Best in the NFL and Superbowl Champions. Glad to see you set high standards for yourself and the team, Howie. Maybe YOU are satisfied with competitive. After 52 years without a championship, the fans will only be satisfied with a Superbowl victory. mish798798
If Roseman didn't trade our 194th pick for the Pats 193rd pick, we would be going to the Super Bowl instead of the Patriots. Roseman must be losing sleep over that trade! ej610
