It's back -- the annual run-pass ratio debate.
A day after the Eagles lost to the Raiders and ran the ball just 14 times, including two scrambles by Donovan McNabb, coach Andy Reid was asked the inevitable.
"We did what we thought would help us to win the game," Reid said. "Looking back, we could have run it more."
“We felt like if we could protect we would have a pretty good chance down the field,” Reid said. “That’s what we thought. We had a little bit pf penetration at times and when we didn’t the throws were long or the routes were off a little bit. That’s something we thought we could take advantage of.”
Reid blamed fundamental breakdowns and said he was not going to point fingers at people.
"There are things we could have done better coaching wise to put guys in better postion than we did," Reid said. "They had a couple of blitzes that got us. We didn’t kick out to the extra guy and they beat us on it."
The Eagles also barely used the Wildcat, with Michael Vick only on the field for two plays.
“There are certain weeks that it will be used and certain weeks it won’t,” Reid said. “We just didn’t get to it this week. We didn’t feel the situation was right.”
On the injury front, Reid said left tackle Jason Peters should be able to play Monday against Washington. Peters went out with a knee contusion and ankle sprain. "He should be able to work through that and be ready this week," Reid said. "He's walking around halfway decent. We’ll see how he does." Reid said he did not intend to bring anyone else in on the offensive line.
Victor Abiamiri has a knee sprain and Reid said it was a "day-to-day situation." Brodrick Bunkley has a rib contusion, but Reid said he should be OK. Omar Gaither has a foot sprain.
As for Jeremiah Trotter, who was burned against the Raiders on a long touchdown, Reid said, "He's moving better than he did when we had him before. It's just a matter of getting him back into playing."
As for the impending trade deadline, he said, "We're keeping our eyes open. We're looking."
Reid blamed the loss on a lack of technique and execution, not effort.
“It’s a great lesson to learn that no team is as good as you think in this league and no team is a bad as you think," Reid said. "It’s the National Football League and you better be ready to play and execute, as coaches and players, starting with me. Anything less than that and you’ve got a problem.”
Samo - samo. It's the same reason the Eagles will be good but never great. The Reid - McNabb combo will never win a Super Bowl. One is too stubborn and chokes under pressure, the other just chokes under pressure. Every year they throw up a turd. Good teams do that, great teams always find a way to win. Face it, the Eagles will never be great with this duo. nasjo

I guess Andy's 'had to do a better job'; 'it's on me to put these guys in a position to win'; 'time's yours' tape broke. Andy - up yours. You have proven once again to be a lousy talent evaluater, poor game day coach unable to make adjustments. The Raiders? Really? Uggh delcorules
Let's see......"I have to do a better job"....."This is my responsibility" "I need to put the players in a better posiiton" Joe.....Look at results....Your coach stinks.....and he beats up the media guys because he is a child...Jeffery , after 10 years plus aren't you embarrassed by his excuses and his lack of preparation and his talent selection......(i.e. NO backups who can play) Jeff, Joe....the sheep, the loyalists will always buy the gear, spend the money for seats and food etc.....so firing Andy will not hurt the bottom line.....and going 8-8 is no big deal....(we're going to do that anyway) Where is YOUR pride Jeff ? Joe ? You will continue to fleece us but why not throw us a bone and show YOU have pride and the desire to win it all.....It's in your court Joe, Jeff......It is obvious that Andy is doing the same things, saying the same things, treating people in the same disdainful way...for his 10th year....and Joe....what did you say the definition of insantity was.......Time to deceide if you and Jeff are insane or just afraid of the guy nuggett
I don't understand how a professional football coach didn't see what was going to happen with Trotter. Sean payton expose him almost 2 years ago,ie pass when he is on the field, run when he is on the bench. After that game every team followed suit. What was Reid thinking, every analyst perdicted what happened. Bork

If the offense was focused on getting Westbrook the ball, 6 carries is a funny way of doing that. Your comment make zero sense, DonovanwillwintheSB. They lost because they couldn't protect and made no adjustments. dmanns
i think it's great that the highlight of the game was the pigeon flying downfield with the kickoff team... robbo3
Yes Andy, you've got problems alright. The offensive line is a disaster. Our only viable middle linebacker is gone for the year. We can no longer rely on our kicker. Our starting QB is still trying to break people's feet with his throws. And you have once again abandoned the running game. Oh yeah, you lost to the Raiders too. rob611

My thing is this.. We brought back Trotter for run situations. What was he doing on the field for an obvious passing situaton 3rd and 10 in a crunch time situation. I just don't understand. Overall the defense didn't play bad enough to lose but its a shame that we couldn't simplify the offence enough to get at least one touchdown. I don't even think we threatned them on O did we even get to the red zone.. ?? BIGGZ043
Comment removed.- this team should be ashamed....what a poor showing...im sure the guys in the locker room know it too. show improve. teenwolf
"Anything less than that and you’ve got a problem." - we've had a problem for 11 years now. its the same old story with these clowns. will reid ever lose his arrogance? sometimes it just amazes me how he is the only person in the world who does not realize a balanced offense is what wins super bowls (esp when you have an inaccurate QB) Fire Andy Reid
In a showdown of two of the league's worst coaches (in my opinion), Zorn owns Reid...go Skins!!! Q: Why doesn't Reid make halftime adjustments? A: Needs to scarf down as many burgers as he can, all that walking up and down the sidelines makes him VERY hungry! tralala
The reason Donovan had no timeouts was because REID called the previous two. He called them after INCOMPLETIONS, when - you know - the clock is already stopped. Reid must go, it's time. And get rid of Donovan too, Kolb can actually hit a moving target. I'm done with Frick and Frack. Tacklebury
And one more thing, coach Reid. Play action passing only works AFTER YOU'VE ESTABLISHED THE RUN. My midget football coach knew that. You aren't going to fool anyone and would be better off keeping the backs in to protect. Not that McCoy can block anybody, he's terrible (and a fumbler). Another wasted pick .... Tacklebury
This guy makes me sick. If you are satisfied by winning seasons with a sprinkled in playoff win, then this guy is your man. He will never adjust on game day, therefore he will never win a Super Bowl. bobmc

Spongebob and Patrick = Reid and McNabb. jeandarc
trotter is moving better? you have got to be kiddin me same old andy with the same old lyin answers get him back to playing?they should get him back to the carwash. tomarch
The thing with the Eagles is they are so predictable.Pass pass pass why not take a chance and blitz all the time when you know they're going to pass all the time. Betcha this will be the best the Raiders play all year. They'll never have another six sack game. pudgy49

I agree with "Nugget". Andy Reid always uses the same line, "I have to do a better job at ______." After 11 years, shouldn't he have learned how to do this? He never improves and is always stubborn and pathetic. Let him go now and bring in a real coach. Our beloved Birds will never win a Superbowl w/ Fat@$$ Reid running this team. Go Phillies! Tar Heel 1
" We did what we thought would help us to win the game " Baloney.Coachspeak for: I have a Obsessive Compulsive Disorder about passing the football constantly and win or lose I can't help myself...Even if we telegraph our tendencies, put the QB in jeopardy of getting killed, and put all the pressure on the Defense to win football games for us.I know yesterday was a classic case of not adjusting to the opposing teams Defensive gameplan put throwing the ball is sexier than pounding the ball and controlling the line of scrimmage. Plus I just got a new contract extension so somebody up there likes me.... MJPD345- How could McNabb not know he was out of time outs? We should have had a TD on that drive and dimwit pulled a Chris Webber.
Three questions for Joe Banner: - Do you think the number of sports talk radio listeners or newspaper readers is fewer than the number of Eagles season ticket holders? - If Andy "has to do a better job and takes full responsibility for that," is there any follow up to see if he did that better job so that in the future, he doesn't have to take full responsibility for that? - Are you going to publish the survey results that suggest that Eagles fans overwhelmingly approve of Andy Reid's 95-5 pass-run ratio? wugeball
Andy Reid is who he is. You have to accept the flaws to get the goods. And the goods are a lot better than spoiled Eagles fans want to acknowledge. The man's won 100 games. He's take the club to the NFC championship game five times. And he's made it to the Super Bowl once (which equals the total number of appearances for the franchise). Yes, he's never won the big one. He gives up too easily on the run. And his game management can be maddening. But what if the Birds fired him and started over. Would they be better off? The odds say no. Muckrakers
F this finesse offense. p-diddy
"You have to accept the flaws" - Muckrakers. No, we don't. No offense dude but that's the kind of attitude that breeds mediocrity. Consistency is the hobgoblin of the feeble mind, and Reid is surrounded by hobgoblins. Tacklebury
GOLD STANDARD!!! mattk
this team will stink for another 5 years until they get rid of Reid. Won't run the ball, can't make in game adjustments. Every year will be 7-9 to 9-7 but Lurie and Banner are happy with that. fthebirds
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah and furthermore... BLAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! TheJoker
Like Iv'e been saying for 8 years now. Reid has to go!!!!! sawgrass
embarrassing...time to move on, mcnugget is not a leader, never was, never will be, not capable of bringing a team back from behind, this is so played, time for change 32pitch
Jeff Lurie needs to see that we are not blind followers. Help me help him see it; visit www.nomoreandy.com and help me spread T shirts and bumper stickers all over the town! no_more_andy
I'm taking a little poll. For every reader - how long would you last at your job if, when a problem arises, you say, "I just needed to put folks in a better position to do their jobs?" At some point, after saying that 10 or 20 times, isn't that an admission that you're not cut out for that job? SMitchell
I've had enough. I'd rather watch Norm Snead. Pilot
I'm tired of this team year after year performance. That game yesterday was atrocious. The offense couldn't get anything going whatsover. When will they ever get it right. I thought they did after the New Orleans loss. Why did the O line not have better protection and the defense couldn't stop the passingh attack. What's really going on with this team? The eagles need to learn a thing or two from the Phillies on how to play hard and consistent. At least we can count on the Phillies as the only team to bring us a parade on broad street. knmcmahon

Comment removed.- for a supposed "good" coach, he sure makes the same mistakes over and over and over and over ....

Too bad we can't trade the coach. After 10 years he still hasn't figured out he needs to run the ball more. That doesn't change from week to week or year to year. Laurie is an idiot or Fat Andy is blackmailing him. bigcityballer
