Report: Eagles among teams looking to trade up to No. 4
Daily News staff
The Eagles are among about four teams that have inquired about trading with Cleveland for the fourth overall pick in the draft, league sources told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The Eagles have the 15th overall pick in Round 1 and also have two-second round picks at No. 46 and No. 51 (acquired from Arizona in the Kevin Kolb trade). The report indicates that would make them an attractive trading partner, but the Browns would have to be willing to slide all the way to No. 15.
The report also identifies the Rams, who have the sixth pick and two second-rounders. Rams coach Jeff Fisher has said he would be interested in moving up. The two other teams are not identified in the report.
The speculation is that teams are interested in Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who has made a meteoric rise up draft boards. That has been somewhat strange, when you consider that he spent most of his time at A&M as a wide receiver and has only started 19 games at quarterback.
He also suffered a broken foot in January, missed the Senior Bowl and was limited at the combine.
More than 20 teams attended his Pro Day. The Eagles were not among them, but did send quarterback coach Doug Pederson to Texas for a private workout. He also has done a private workout for the Chiefs and is expected to visit with the Bills next week. Tannehill has a visit scheduled with the Browns this weekend.
The Eagles and Browns have pulled off trades before, given that Brown GM Tom Heckert worked for the Eagles and team president Mike Holmgren is Andy Reid's mentor. NFL Network analsyst Mike Mayock suggested last week that the Eagles could possibly trade up for Tannehill.
Heckert said at the owners meetings that he has preliminary talks with some teams and that he would be willing to move back a few spots. According to the Plain Dealer, the Browns have brought in a number of players who seem more likely to go in the teens that in the Top 5, although that could be due diligence. The safe pick for Cleveland would seemingly be to stay close enough to the top of the draft that they could select Alabama running back Trent Richardson.
One would have to think that if Tannehill is still there at No. 8, the Dolphins would select him.
A trade would not happen until draft day, because it is unclear what Minnesota will do at No. 3. The Vikings could also be looking to move down.
Another scenario, as the report suggests, is that teams might be interested in a player other than Tannehill such as USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil, LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne and Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon.
There is still nearly 2 weeks until the draft so expect the speculation to continue.
For everyone calling Blackmon a big receiver: he's not THAT big. 6'1, 207. He does play bigger than his listed measurables. le sigh
We'll get who we get when we get him, stop being idiots, just sayin'... DJ
I think this a lot of misdirection from the Browns. No Eagles source cited so Browns may be passing on Tannehill and are just looking for best deal possible and trying to drive up the price. It would be an incredibly stupid move...almost as stupid as the poster who the other day was HOPING for a trade for Tannehill and today is calling it a stupid move if the Eagles actually did it. Now THAT is credibility. tpizza
If they move up to 4 and the pick is Tannenhill, what good will that do for this current team? You need DEFENSE DUMMY! I have no confidence whatsoever in Eagles Mgmt making the right selections (see Graham, Watkins). younged- agreed. This team still has too many holes on defense to move up to take, at best, a reach at QB. As long as Soupy is the DC this team needs as much talent as it can get on the defensive side of the ball. Perhaps talent can overcome poor coaching.
I don't trust Mrs. Roseman's little boy, Howie, with any of these picks. coloradoeagle
"They need players who can play now, not two years from now"
You think 8-8, 36 turnovers and 18 interceptions means you are ready to play now??????
markconte
Any new Linebacker the Eagle draft is going to have the same issues as Cheney and Rolle and that's being inexperienced. I don't think it a wise move to automatically discount either of those kids so early. Combined we are talking less than 3 years of NFL Experience.
There were a few fundamental problems in their play, but overwhelmingly both were able to be in position to make plays. Cheney suxs as a tackler and closing angles, something that can be over come with off season work. Rolle need to pick up confidence but by in large, he was often in position and seemed to do well in defending the passing routes to backs out of the Backfield. I don't like Rolle being matched up with a 6'5 Tight End. He's quick enough to defend the quick out routes. Dexter
Outside of Luck and RG3, there is no player in the draft worth moving up and trading away the Eagles contingent of picks. Also, the Linebacker from Boston College is not worth pick 15.
From pick 1 to 15, every player choose should be someone that can come in to the NFL Suit up and instantly change the dynamics of his drafting teams strategy and attack.
A linebacker is not going to have game changing impact in a passing league. Running now only becomes effective to protect a lead late in games and drain the clock.
Dexter
Soulman, with the Eagles offensive line over the pass few years, neither Brady, Manning or Brees had any of them been the Eagles Quarterback would have withstood the 49 Sacks per season that Vick and McNabb could not.
Tannehill has played 17 college games, where is the idea coming he has talent on the level of RG3 the Heisman Winner, or Luck a 3 year Starter and twice Heisman runner up? I sincerely doubt that Tannehill could come in and displace Kafka as the No. 3 Quarterback.
Kafka was a quality Big 10 Quarterback, he threw for 500 years on Auburn University in the 2010 Outback Bowl.
Last year Kafka was on a short leash playing with no off season work. It's to early to write off Kafka. Allow Kafka to get used to the speed of the game. Dexter
The Eagles need defense, defense & m ore defense...DT, LB, S...And when exactly would Reid have won a super bowl with an elite QB? For the majority of his years here, he totally ignored the WR position...Not until the last few years did he start drafting quality WRs...Even Manning would have been hard pressed to win a super bowl with the WRs we have had prior to Jackson & Maclin drjimmy
Nothing great will come out of trading as much as we would need to in order to move up to grab Tanehill. Moving up to the 4th is not a bad idea, but if we did, it should be to snag Justin Blackmon or a quality linebacker. Although I KNOW, (willing to bet my life on it) that the Eagles D will be very very good this year, if you take into account that their defense was new to eachother and the lockout took away their chance to form any chemistry before the season, and towards the end of the season you could definatley see it clicking. An outside linebacker to compliment Brian Rolle (who I'm rightfully very impressed with) or a big receiver like Blackmon to be that big redzone presence they so desperately need, could be much more useful than an understudy who has yet to play a complete season as a QB. Especially after making Vick the richest QB in NFL history, (therefore putting all your future trust in him). Andy Reid needs grab hold of reality. I respect him as someone who can make something out of nothing with QB's, but he may be one of the worst drafting coaches I've seen in awhile. Draft somebody you can use Eagles Management. Thanks. Eagles2Eagles
if anything they should trade out of the first round....tannehill will be a bust and talent from picks 14-32 are roughly similar...id love if they could trade down from their first pick for the pats 27 and 31 picks...and then throw in a couple late rounders in or even asante. then, there will be some talented players that will fall down to them. and if there isnt talent they like, trade for a first rounder next year (barkley, bray, wilson, jones are all much better qb prospects than tannehill) HDemetriou
The Eagles front office are like kids in a candy store. Chasing each flavor of the day paying more than its worth. This team could have a good starting DT, SS and SLB with its first three picks if it played its cards right and upgrade its woeful defense. Once the defense is repaired, then go chase your QB next year. These types of inexperienced players are not worth chasing. The price is too high compared to the risk. RunningTheBases- I suspect a surprise pick from SouthEast North Dakota State. A 6'1" 220LB DT with a "high motor." Because Reid is always craftier than the rest of the league. Or a kicker. Maybe a waterboy. Who cares, his drafts have been rated C or less by every sports site for the past 5 years anyway. Just print out Mel Kiper's picks and you'll do better (no, seriously, someone did an analysis of that somewhere). verve
yES THEY WASTE ALL THOSE PICKS THEY STOCK UP ANYWAY. Norm3
Tanehill looks good to me ...AR will do what is needed johnnyu john ullman
A nice rumor. Keeps the offseason NFL going. To trade up to get Tannehill, he better be darn good. Kalil looks like the guy to trade up for. Or, Fletcher Cox, if they think he stands out from the other tackles. Might have to go to #9 to get him. Or, Kuechly at #10. armchairGM
Oh goody sounds like another project. Played wide receiver, has a broken foot. Yes we need this guy. Keeping it real 4u
"The speculation is that teams are interested in Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill"
Tannehill is a reach in the first round. If the Eagles trade up to try to get this career CFL backup, it will be proof that that the Eagles brain trust is dumber than a box of rocks. fmMD- you need more proof?
coloradoeagle
If it's Tannehill they want, I can understand the move, but the problem is, the kid would be QB of the future...two, three years down the road. Throwing him into an NFL game this season (unless everyone else gets hurt) is career suicide for him. But the Eagles I think are committing team suicide if they drop all three of those picks to the Browns just to get Tannehill. I would say, don't do it; it's too risky. Use the picks you have to shore up the areas that are most important right now. MidStaterUXB
actually banned thats not even fully accurate. Andys first few years of success were with Ray Rhodes defensive players and Tom Modrak as GM. Even including his first few years where he inherited all the best defensive players he ever had, he STILL screwed up virtually every big game against the best teams and his average win/loss is just about 9-7 per season, VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL TO WHAT THE EAGLES HAD UNDER BUDDY RYAN, RAY RHODES, AND RICH KOTITE. ALL OF THEM COMBINED HAVE VIRTUALLY THE SAME EXACT AVERAGE 9-7 WINS PER SEASON. and even Rich Kotite NEVER BLEW 5 FOURTH QUARTER LEADS. NO ONE HAS. THAT IS HORRIBLE REID IS THE MOST OVER-RATED COACH IN THE ENTIRE NFL. KEEP DRINKING THE LOW CALORY KOOL-AID. CharlieGarner25
WMR, it's agida and I know because when I was a kid my father called me the main source of his :)
IMO, the Eagles usually get the better with the trades pick for pick but the players they get with those picks are questionable to say the least.
This may be a smoke screen too but I definitely don't want them to trade up that far and forfeit chances in the 2nd and 3rd for ONE player. tpizza
Just stay where you are and pick the best player available. It works for the Steelers. zeke128

Two moronic Front Office's making trades with each other...thats great. The Browns are going nowhere whether they pick #4 or #15. Same with Fat Andy. Holmgren won his only one superbowl with a QB HE DIDNT EVEN PICK. Holmgren had NO CONTROL over personel of the Packers the entire time he was there. NONE. That would be RON WOLF (a pa guy), who personally scouted Favre out of college, missed taking him when he was with Jets before he went to the packers, and traded with the falcons for a 2nd rounder to get Favre once he became GM of the packers (which was considered crazy at the time). He also picked THE ENTIRE ROSTER after learning how to scout from Al Davis in the 70's and helping the Raiders win multiple superbowls with players he helped draft. Holmgren and Andy havent picked one SB winning QB IN THIER ENTIRE LIVES. Dumb fat coaches should absolutely not be in charge of ANY personel decisions let alone a whole teams. The only thing Holmgren was allowed to pick in 96 were his assistant coaches, like a guy named Andy Reid. Ron Wolf built that team and it won a SB with his decisions, the only thing teams run by Holmgren and Andy have done is LOSE. So yea you guys make trades with each other...GENIUS...SUPERBOWL FOR CLEVELEND COMING UP. CharlieGarner25
Kalil? Why? So they can get rid of Peters AND Bell?
OK, Claiborne but is he worth not being about to get Kirkpatrick, and a LB and a DT? I say stand pat and get whoever falls to you. Draft Cox or Kirkpatrick if they are there. If it's Kirk go DT/LB in second round...adds up to a lot of depth and new blood.
The Eagles have enough ammo to really help a lot of positions on the team instead of putting all their eggs in one basket ala Graham and having nothing to show for it.
QUIT SCREWING AROUND ANDY!! Why draft 46 players in the seventh round looking for gold and then trade away multiple picks at the top concentrating on ONE player who may or may not be worth it? Aren't multiple picks at the top worth more than multiple picks at the bottom? They have the money...the theory is flawed. tpizza
When its draft day, and the Eagles move either up OR down in the first round, when the smoke clears, it always seems like they got the short end of the deal. Reid gives me odgeda. watsonmr
if they are moving up to get Claiborne or Qoples then i say go for it. Anyone else is just not worth it.
If i were the Eagles i would like to see Barron in the first and then using one of the twos and a Samuel to move back in the first and take Fleener. If they could somehow work that deal i think it makes the team the best team they can be NEXT year. Being able to throw two star level TE's would change the offense. Look at the pats last year and they had zero WR help. Imagine Trying to cover Fleener (who may be better than Gronk) and Celek on the inside while trying to cover MAclin and Jackson on the outside... It would be impossible. andyreidisfat
NO , just sit at 15 and take the best player available, no matter what position ... FatBoy90
But just taking a step back and look at the NFC for a min. Teams like Green bay, Giants, 49ers. I feel like we match up well defensively with those teams. BUT what about on offense. I just dont see teams game planning extensively for Avant and Cooper and that needs to be addressed in the first round. If this is truly a superbowl or bust season we need playmakers. Not a DT that wont even start but fits in a rotation. First round guys need to be starters. Get a guy in there that demands respect on every snap. That can only help our offense extend and sustain drives consistently. That keeps your Top 10 defense fresh. this draft is deep in DT's. Im sure we might find one in the 2nd round and another corner or safety there too. Round 1 needs to be WR,QB,Safety the best on the board. A starter not a rotation/project pick. Blackmon WR,FLoyd WR,Barron S,Tannehill QB in that order. Floyd is the better pick because you shouldnt have to give up anything and can still address other needs. The other picks you would have to give up something Yes_General
As long as the player is undersized with a high motor the eagles will be fine Mottz
USC tackle Mike Calil...johnnyu john ullman
We're going to need a QB, probably sooner rather than later. DogTorturer only has about two years left before he crashes and burns. Pull the trigger for Tannehill if the price isn't outrageous. techdiver
Every year i feel like we have this same debate. Defense wins every year meanwhile every year we dont make it to the superbowl. Last year we didnt even make it to the playoffs. OUR Receivers drop the ball WAY too much. Maclin and Desean are great football players but we need a bigger threat. Trade up for Blackmon or Draft Floyd at 15. Load up on Defense for every other round for all i care but please DRAFT the best WR on the board. Not another 3rd or 4th round project. Not another Olympic skier but the best WR on the board. Yes_General
As soon as I read it, I didn't even think they were wmoving up for Tannehill for a second. They want the Cornerback Claiborne or Kalil. UncleStosh
If Andy Reid misses on this one, it will cost him his job anyway, so why not go for it? He's got to produce some lofty results this year or else. SteveS11
The Birds should stay at 15, if they want a CB. take the kid, from South Carolina. Don't touch tannerhill at #4 they must want Claiborne. Lb 54 wide 9
Tannehill is a project. If anyone picks him before No. 20, they are setting themselves up for major backlash. This guy could end up being like Akili Smith, a one-year collegiate wonder. If the Eagles draft him, they should fire Reid immediately. oglejd
If this is true, Reid knows he is staying beyond this one, last year. Rats! mccloudmj- If the Eagles go 8-8 again (or worse) Jeffrey Lurie is going to have a hard time selling the fans on why he still thinks Andy gives the Eagles the best chance to win it all. I think they're going to give Andy every chance to succeed this year, including getting the players that he wants, but if he fails again, then its see ya time!
SteveS11
Take SPECIAL K FROM BOISE STATE....# 11...... THE QB......HE WILL BE A STAR....THEN TRADE FOR SEASONED VETERANS TO GET US TO THE FREAKIN SUPER BOWL....HOW LONG....HOW LONG....DO WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH NO TROPHY IN THE MODERN ERA OF FOOTBALL...... frank castle
AR is a QB coach and will choose the USC tackle with the pick they receive...johnnyu john ullman
They better not trade up using their first round pick and both 2nd rounders! We have a LOT of holes to fill on D and need all those picks. If anyway Asante and a 2nd and 3rd rounder would get us up there (doubt it) then that would be great but we surely need help on the D thru the draft and not a 2 year project (especially not a QB). If Eagles want a good QB project they should trade the Patriots for the QB they got last year as he is better then Tannehill anyway connorjr
Ay carumba why won't people STFU about Mike Mamula? He was a decent player, plus he was playing out of position. Also, drafting good defensive players was Ray Rhodes' best area. p-diddy
i wish dummies would go back and see that pierre paul was not rated above graham coming out ..thats why he wasnt a top ten pick stop acting like philly is the only team that passed on him if he was a sure bet he would have went in the top 5 ....i dont see philly moving up for the qb ..they never show ther hand so if it looks like they want him they dont positive eagle
garyp: Watkins was playing pretty well by the end of last season, you dope. p-diddy
I think it is not wise to trade up. The Eagles need to win now. They really need a run-stopper at DT. They really need to improve at safety. They need a tall WR for the red zone. How about a big RB to pound out those tough yards. No point giving away a chance at the SB to get a QB who may be good 3 years from now. 4thand10
cornerback scootch
Tradin up, especially that far up, is the ultimate in stupidity for the Eagles in this draft. They have to many holes that need immediate impact. If anything, they should trade down for a couple more picks.
That being said, it definitely sounds like something Reid/Rosenhouse would do. Unstable1

could be looking to jump tampa for claiborne. Sean s.
The Birds will trade their 1st and two 2nds to move up to the 14th pick. 2ndNlong
Trade Asante Samuels and our 2nd rd pick (51st overall) to the Browns. Take Tannehill, let him study under Vick for 1 maybe 2 years and BAM! I believe that our defense will actually be OK this year. NC Eagle Fan
Tannehill is a project and not worthy of pick #4. Almost every draft expert has Kalil going to the Vikings at #3. The Eagles should just stay at #15 and wait to see who falls to them there. If Barron is there, they should grab him immediately. If not, a DT or CB. Need an outside LB also. vinnybravo- Sound logic. Bravo, Vinny.

The big reason Texas A&M went 7-6 last year was in part to Tannehill and his penchant for blowing leads and losing to teams that they should have beaten. Hmm..I guess when you put it that way, he would fit right in with Reid and Co. Just stay put and take Kirk Cousins with one of the second round picks. ESFjellin
Great, select another QB, after giving Vick a big contract, even though the Birds could drop him after this season. Sure, have Vick looking over his shoulder for 16 games. Of course, with Reid, nothing would suprise me. mike l
If this is true, then the EAGLES will BLOW ANOTHER draft (actually 3 for 3 straight drafts). Reid just can't accept the obvious move and improve his team with run stopper and another quality LB. He is going to ggive all 3 picks up for what?! Reid always tries to out smart everyone e.g. Pierre Paul vs B Graham (at best a 2nd round selection 2-yrs ago). There are other examples of his 1-uping everyone both in Reid's drafting and play calling. Dis-heartening across the board, Lerze777- Nothing like some nice hindsight to misremember the facts. Graham was a projected first round pick and the pick got good grades from the experts. If he hadn't gotten hurt, he may have broken out as much as JPP. Also, Pierre Paul was the prototypical workout warrior, so if Reid had picked him, fans would have been screaming Mamula all over again.
Llamaboy1375 - JPP did only 19 reps at 225 at the Combine...While he's a freak track athlete, he was FAR from a workout warrior. He was a projection of innate, athletic ability, with not much tape at Div 1....I do agree with that Brandon Graham CANNOT be labeled a bust so soon in his career...But he has to rebound from his knee injury and work harder than he did at Michigan.

I've watched Tannehill closely. In terms of talent and athleticism he's right up there with Luck and RG. He just doesn't have as much experience. He's coming from a west coast offense at Texas A&M. He would be a perfect fit for the Eagles. He could be Vick's understudy for a season. I truly believe Tannehill could be the elite QB the Eagles have been searching years for. If Andy Reid had an elite QB like a Manning, Brady, Brees to work with he would have a superbowl victory by now. soulman386- You are a moron.tannehill is far from elite.he won't start his 1st 3 yrs in the league unless the team that drafts him is desperate but then again the eagles are desperate because they will be a loser next year.
sewell guy
If the Eagles had lost the last four meaningless games, they wouldn't have to give away all the picks to move to #4. 4thand10- No wonder you are 4 and 10.
dmanphilly
This sounds like Mike Mamula all over again. TyroneShoes
Graham, Watkins, Mamula, etc, etc, etc. Quit screwing up this team fat boy and let the person that brings us peters, ryans and babin do the drafting. This is our cities team, don't mess it up for the next twenty years. garyp- Mamula was drafted by Ray Rhodes, get a clue
crohnkiller - Andy Reid had nothing to do with Mamula, Mamula was a Ray Rhodes pick. Graham is hardly a bust, he got injured. And Watkins just finished up his first year on an offensive line that was one of the best by the end of the year
Llamaboy1375 - Graham not a bust, what would you call him??? Watkins just finished his first year, based on fat boys standards he has two years left until they let him go, great return on investment!!!
denver2006
Move up to 4 and take Blackmon, a Calvin Johnson clone. Or jump up two spots to take Barron before the Cowboys can take him. Either way, don't move up to take Tannehill. amg- Justin Blackmon is NOT a Calvin Johnson clone in any shape or form...More likely comparisons are to Anquan Boldin...Regarding ths rumor, either Cleveland is blowing out smoke to scare Miami, or Howie wants to play games with the #4 pick...Agreed,taking Taneyhill there would be idiotic.
