McNabb says he's feeling 'pretty good'
Daily News staff
Eagles coach Andy Reid said there “is a chance” that Donovan McNabb could play Sunday against Kansas City and he was hopeful that Brian Westbrook could work through his lingering ankle problems. McNabb said he feels "pretty good" but he isn't sure if he will be ready to play Sunday.
McNabb did not play Sunday against the Saints with a broken rib.
On Monday, McNabb was asked how he felt physically: “I feel pretty good, better than last Monday. It’s one day at a time. I think there is a process that is going on, and the progression makes you feel confident that things are going to be better. Hopefully, it will be quicker than later. I’m looking forward to being back out on the field.”
On whether he has any sense yet about his status for the Kansas City game this weekend, McNabb said: "I don’t. I wish I had an answer, but I don’t. Hopefully, things will continue to get better and I’ll have one for you later.”
Reid also talked about McNabb's recovery: “It was a little slower from Friday through Sunday,” Reid said. “It feels a little better today. We’ll see how it goes. I can’t tell you he can take a hit today.”
Westbrook suffered a high ankle sprain in the third quarter. After some treatment, he returned to the game for one play and then came out again. The injured ankle is the same one that needed a cleanout procedure in the spring. Reid said Westbrook has a “little swelling” in the ankle today.
“He hasn’t played much in a game,” Reid said. “Everything is a little faster in a game. He’s doing that, going through that process. It’s important that he keeps working through it. He’s working like crazy with the trainers. He gets frustrated a little bit. He wants to be out there every snap. That’s just not the way it’s going to work here right now. He has to gradually work himself in there right now.”
DeSean Jackson has a groin strain and Reid describes the situation as “day-to-day.” Asante Samuel had a neck stinger and should “be OK,” Reid said. Dimitri Patterson will have hand surgery and be out for the game this week. Todd Herremans is “making progress,” Reid said, but won’t be ready for this week.
Reid was feisty, combative even, bristling even at innocuous questions. He seemed to want to emphasize that execution, not effort, was the problem against the Saints. Reid also asserted that the team ran the Wildcat 12 times Sunday, three more times than news accounts said. Apparently, Reid was including plays where quarterback Kevin Kolb took the snap but the line was arrayed differently, such as the option pitch from Kolb to LeSean McCoy.
Reid said Kolb will take all the nonWildcat snaps in Wednesday's practice, which would indicate that McNabb won't practice. With the bye coming up after Kansas City, it might be prudent to sit the QB another week.
Even without McNabb, the Eagles will have three eligible quarterbacks this week, including Michael Vick. Reid would not disclose whether Vick or Jeff Garcia will be listed as the third QB if McNabb can't go. He emphasized that he did not want to put Vick in a position he is unprepared for right now.

The Eagles announced Monday that cornerback Dimitri Patterson underwent surgery to repair a third metacarpal fracture in his left hand. The surgery was performed by Dr. John Taras in Philadelphia.

Andrew Brandt, who worked in the Eagles' front office during contract negotiation time this spring and summer, has an interesting take today on his National Football Post blog. There's some discussion of why the Jeremy Maclin deal took so long, and an assertion that safety Sean Jones took a pay cut in the $500k range to avoid being cut in the final roster trimming. Jones certainly has not earned the role forecast for him when he signed from Cleveland.
- The Return of ROSIE O.! -- you're an idiot. its not bad karma, we just lost to a good team. EVERY team loses games. is this because they have bad karma too? our record is 1-1. geez, go get a life already
Comment removed.- The defense, the offense and Kevin Kubb all went to sleep in the second half. We probably wasn't going to beat the Siants anyway but to get blown out like we did is just unforgivable! But hey, no biggie. The Eagles will go 2-1 after crushing the Chiefs and head into the bye week for some rest and recovery. I say start Vick and Garcia this week! Kubb still has a lot to learn. Let him sit this one out.
Where was Reggie Brown? I thought he and Kolb were on the same "page during preseason! We would have definitely won if he was on the field. dry ice man
will.i.am, you seem to be forgetting Vick's career in Atlanta after 2004. 15-17 record with under a touchdown pass and under 175 yards per game passing. He was pathetic. They had to trade Schaub that offseason because everyone down there was clamoring for a qb change and Vick was their money train. Hell, Joey Harrington threw for more yards than he ever did the following year with the same exact receivers. If he didn't go to jail he would still be a back-up at best at this point in his career. To expect him to do anything besides run around and be inconsistent is ignoring history. jaybatt79

I think that they should sit Westbrook out this week and give him 3 weeks to recover. Bobphxville
Reid better be OPTMISTIC on RB's since he only has 1 after Westbrook. Maybe he can use a QB. tulsaphil- who is dmitri patterson? does he mean mike patterson?
- I'm so tired of Andy Reid's excuses and arrogance.
I think Dmitri Patterson is a D-Back Bobphxville
