Reid: Vick Deserves 2nd Chance

POSTED: Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 12:00 PM

We've found something else Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid agree on, beyond discomfort with making declarations about the quality of the roster in July. (Though both men have been careful to not sound as if they're telling team president Joe Banner to, uh, kindly desist, we can clearly infer from their remarks that they wish Banner hadn't proclaimed this the best group of players he's had.)

Anyhow, on Monday, McNabb said Michael Vick should be reinstated, without serving a suspension, though of course, that wasn't quite how NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ruled. Tuesday, Reid didn't mention the suspension part of it, but he said he definitely feels Vick should be allowed to return, and will return, with former Colts head coach Tony Dungy helping his cause.

Reid was asked about the Eagles' interest in Vick.

"No. 1, I think he's a good kid. Right now, we've got a good situation at quarterback, so that's not the direction I'm looking at," Reid said.  "I'm glad Tony Dungy's involved; there's no finer person around than Tony Dungy. And Michael, the times that I've talked to him, he's a good kid. I think that combination there will help Michael, and probably increase his marketability there."

Asked if he believed Vick deserves a second chance in the NFL, Reid said: "Sure, yeah. At this stage of my life, I'm big on second chances."

Other Reid highlights:

*Nothing new in the Jeremy Maclin talks, but Reid emphasized that the situation is "day-to-day," meaning nobody is hunkering down for a long fight yet.

*Reid seemed the emphasize the skills of Nick Cole, when asked about whether Stacy Andrews' ACL rehab might keep Andrews from being ready to start right away at right guard. Hard to read the tea leaves there. Reid sometimes likes to give shout-outs to hard-working veterans whose contributions he thinks are being overlooked. Or, Farmer Andy could be concerned enough about bringing Andrews along slowly that he wants to prepare the ground for Cole as your opening-day right guard.

"Nick Cole is a quality starting offensive lineman here, which buys time for Stacy to get himself right. We don't have to sit here and force Stacy into a bad situation, not that we would do that anyway," Reid said. "I think everybody has full confidence that Stacy can do the job. I think that's also good for Stacy, on his end, where he can just ease back out there."

Like it or not (and I do NOT...) Vick will end up on an NFL payroll sometime this year. And after the dust has settled from the columnists, opinionators, and any politician looking for ink at that time, he will probably only suit up as a back up for the rest of the year. But rest assured he will be on the field somewhere next year full time. I hope he comes to the Linc so I can have MY Pit Bull shake hands with him.

Not surprising that Andy believes in "second chances", considering the trouble his own sons have been in, but I don't see any way that translates to the Eagles having any interest in signing Vick. That's almost like saying they'd sign Pacman Jones.

dsoul, how can you compare slaughtering a cow or a pig for food to forcing dogs to maul each other to death for entertainment? Was the pig in the ham sandwich I had for lunch drowned, electricuited, or hung for not wanting to kill another pig before it was sent to the meat packing plant? I understand some people aren't dog owners/lovers and that's fine but don't talk down to people who feel strongly about dogs because its a perfectly normal and healthy thing to feel love for a pet. Also, while there may be a somewhat justifiable reason to want to off another person, there is no good reason to brutally abuse and execute dogs. The only way to really know what AR is thinking is through his actions and there is no way in a million years he would give this scum bag thug a spot on his football team. As for McNabb defending him, it wouldn't matter if Vick was responsible for a mass Genocide, he would never throw a brother in the fraternity of black QB's under the bus (as racist as that sounds, its not intended to be.)

The man has a family to support. He made a HUGE mistake and has paid dearly in every aspect of his life. I want him to redeem himself for the sake of his family alone. Lots of people go down the wrong road in life, but there is always time to turn life around as long as you're still breathing. Why hold the man back? Guess what, if he botches this, he'll lose even what little he has left.

Mcdonalds or something if that.. its so many repeat felons cause once out and served their time .NOONE will hire them..if the NFL, being a employer does not mind having someone with a criminal background play...then let him play.. justice was served he served his time...

He's a Punk Thug Felon with Bad Credit. Owes Wachovia a bunch of money for a failed wine bar. He also Electrocuted and Drowned dogs to suit his mood. Sounds like a typical NFL Player! Reinstate!

How the F can Reid say Vick is a 'good kid' knowing what he did? Reid is an a-hole for that statement.

Rest in peace, Jim Johnson. Just heard the bad news from Wolfman on WIP. That sucks. The Super Bowl trophy goes to his family.

Vick's the man. Glad he's free, really hope he gets his life together and gets back on the right track. We all make mistakes his was more public and volatile than most. Vick paid his debt to society and based on the laws of this country he should be given every right to continue seeking life liberty and happiness. Only a convicted rapist would get a worse public image than this guy. Ray Lewis paid his buddy to take the rap for murdering two people and no one cares. Killing dogs hits close to home for most people and Vick will suffer the rest of his life from taunts from these wacko dog fanatics. He should start doing public service announcements for the genocide occuring all throughout the world, then end each spot with, "see all i did was kill a couple of dogs."

Mike Vick did his time, and Roger has weighed in, enough. Now, there is not a shred of evidence that KK has any starting NFL ability and his completion rate to his receivers and DBs including our own makes one wonder. That Joe Banner say so much is bothersome. He needs to stay in the shadows as Laurie's great watcher of the checkbook and gopher. Unless he is setting the stage for ARs eventual departure in a year or two. Scary, Joe Banner running things.
