Reid: 'I've got a good football team'

Despite a fourth-quarter collapse in the loss to Tennessee, Eagles coach Andy Reid was looking on the bright side as he met with the media today.
“It’s a crazy league,” Reid said. “We’re sitting there 4-3 and we’re right there in the hunt in a good way. I know I’ve got a good football team.
“We have to knock a couple of things out here and get it straight. I’m looking forward to the week off and getting the guys a little bit of rest, the scouts doing evaluations and coming back for 9 games of good football. That is where I’m at right now.”
“I saw some great things in that game. We need to build off them and learn from our mistakes. We’re going to do that and get that thing right.”
Reid repeated often no excuses, doing a better job and learning from the mistakes.
“I saw some great things in that game,” he said. “We need to build off them and learn from our mistakes. We’re going to do that and get that thing right.”
“It’s easy to see that one or two plays can swing the momentum of the game,” Reid said. “You have to be able to overcome that. You have to eliminate mistakes and overcome situations like that. Those are situations that we can learn from and we will. We will go back and use this bye week to evaluate ourselves as coaches and evaluate ourselves as players and as a football team and do a thorough, thorough evaluation on that.”
Reid said he thought Michael Vick would be ready to play against Indianapolis after missing the last two games with a rib cartilage injury. Reid said Vick is “improving, he’s getting healthier”
“If he is, he is. I’m thinking he is,” Reid said. “I have full trust in Kevin Kolb as does our football team. I’m not too worried about that. Right now, it looks like he’s on track. We’ll see here.”
Among other injuries, Reid said DeSean Jackson has yet to be cleared with a concussion but Reid said he thought he, defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley and offensive tackle Jason Peters “have a pretty good chance” to play against the Colts.
Antonio Dixon played well and has recorded a sack in Bunkley’s spot in each of the last two games.
“I don’t think Bunk will be 100 percent coming back and Antonio will be in there a lot anyway,” Reid said. “We will have to spoon-feed Bunk and see how much he can do. Dixon was a bright spot in that game. He will continue to have opportunity. With Bunk’s injury, it will be easing them back in. We can’t tell how that is going to do until he gets out there and really grabs somebody.”
As for Peters, “If you talk to doctors and talk to Jason, they’d say yes, but we’ll see what happens.”
Reid credited King Dunlap for being “a warrior” and staying in the game despite a knee injury. Dunlap, if available, would remain in Peters’ spot, if Peters turns out not to be ready. If Dunlap is not able to play, Todd Herremans would likely slide over to tackle from left guard. Dunlap has a bone bruise in addition to the hyperextension of his right knee. Reid acknowledged Dunlap might not be back for the Colts game.

Reid was asked why the defense could not figure a way to stop Titans receiver Kenny Britt.
“We’ve all got a little piece of that. The easy thing to do is point to the guy that’s covering him,” Reid said. “We can mix things up better. There are so many things besides that we needed to take care of and we didn’t do. That’s my responsibility to reel that thing in and we didn’t do it. When given opportunities, you need to put your foot down.”
Reid was later asked about defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
“I thought Sean had a heck of a game plan. Doggone it,” Reid said. “That’s’ a good football team right there. For three quarters, we had it right there. It’s not all about the offense, it’s not all about the defense. Everybody has an opportunity. We have to make sure we secure that up and finish things off.”
Oh that's cool, Reid is going to do a better job and that should solve everything! stanbro
One: You're not in the hunt. Two: How good can your team be when no one in the organization knows how to make in-game adjustments? Three: How good can you be when you are no better an evaluator of talent, game manager, game-day coach or winner than you were ten years ago? rubicon24
Can someone please tell me how A. Reid has improved over the last ten years? rubicon24
Gosh darn it, we're going to do a better doggone job of putting poeple in the right position to do the right thing there and we're going to get this thing right, there, you betcha! fentonhardy
Reid does have a good football team and if you do not like the Eagles find another team. The defense needs to finish games simple as that. They had Chri Johnson stopped yes should have adjusted as soon as they saw Britt getting hot. I am trying to like Kolb but I just dont understand what he learned sitting on the bench. I really dont think he can read defenses very well and he is going to get the receivers killed. Almost had the same thing happen to Celek that happen to Jackson. There are not very many good good teams. The Steelers got lucky they should have lost yesterday. The Jests are very good. The Giants are like Jekyl and Hyde not sure who will show up, Packers are hurt, Vikings and the pervert Farve is useless. Cowboys overrated. So yes the Eagles are a good team. Set a couple of players for the rest of the year and a couple get healthy we are just as good as anybody else. Go Eagles and the Colts are hurting also. Blessed8251
If the team is good then it must be the coaching, Right? cuso20
Ellis Hobbs sucks pass it on illwill29
I think that this is a pretty good team with some real weakness in the coaching staff. They came out in the 2nd half and got flat out owned...this has happened in most games this year. You have the halftime break to evaluate and make adjustments...even Mike Singletary did a better job of that than Reid and McDermott. FairmountFrank
Like with McNabb, it still looks like the team and especially Kolb loose that sense of urgency, once they get a lead. That led to close wins like against Detroit, but it was by far not enough to beat the Titans. Fisher was right when he stated, that they have a chance, if the Eagles have to kick Field Goals. So the base for success is there, but the willpower to grab it - it's missing... AachenEagle
I'm not a coach but I do know that if you give Kerry Collins time he'll pick you apart.....I guess our coaches didn't know that.... NC Eagle Fan- Where are these haters coming from. Not a good team? We are on pace for 9 or 10 wins which will win the division or make the wild card. Amazing that so many people hate the home team. Wow. Also not finishing is the sign of a young team plus Reids teams play better in Nov & Dec than in Sep/Oct. GO Eagles
McDermott is overmatched as a co-oridantor. We went from having a top 5 or 10 defense to having to out scored everyone. He either needs to figure it out, fast; or we need a new guy in the offseason. rob808pf
If Reid has a good football team, why isn't he playing that one? These guys suck JSaq
Chill people. The Eagles have one or two games like this every year, especially in Sept/Oct. Then they usually do well in the back half of the season. That being said, there are some holes to be filled (and I don't mean wolf's dream of Kolb) and injuries to heal. Been reading on this site for a couple/few years & every time there's a game like this so many people think the sky is falling. Hopefully MV7 & DJax are healthy by the Indy game. Pi$$ing and moaning isn't gonna change anything. Watch & hope for the best. Mabus
Interesting blogs...the homers and sheep versus those asking questions and pointing out Reid's 11 years of failure to win the only thing that counts......those that are willing "to settle" are the losers as is Andy's 11 years of failure ....thanks Jeffery, remeber it is your legacy also nuggett
Everyone predicted 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7. And that's what they will be during a rebuilding year with tons of injuries. What's the problem? bobbyd24
YOU HAVE A GOOD TEAM IT'S A SHAME THEY DON'T have good coach boppa2- Since when did criticism become hate? What a stupid thing to say. For one, if we didn't "love" our teams and want them to be great, we'd ignore them. Two, hate is a powerful, destructive emotion that gives rise to all kinds of destructive acts. Like throwing snowballs at Jimmy Johnson.
Lighten up, defenders of the status quo. Don't hate the haters, just give good reasons to love Andy and gang. Eephus
They were a good team - for three quarters. The problem was the fourth quarter when everything fell apart. In the National Parity League, 4-3 makes them still a contender, but they have to play well consistently for the whole game and cut out the mistakes and penalties. Trapper Jeff- Jets, Patriots, and Steelers, by record, are a bit better than everyone else right now. In the NFC, no-one stands out. Atlanta has a better record at 5-2, but the Eagles beat them nicely. Giants, Tampa Bay, and Seattle are 4-2, but I don't think anyone is in fear of those three. Favorites New Orleans and Green Bay are 4-3, just like the Eagles and the Redskins. This is far from decided. The Eagles have a tough second half schedule, but they seem to be improving in some areas (run defense, offense when Jackson isn't hurt, special teams when we don't fumble). As much as we like to make fun of Andy, they clearly are in the hunt. JohnFC
48 pass plays; 21 run plays
Andy is as blind as a football coach as he is as a father firefatandy- its just a repeat of last year. 3-0 against crappy teams in san fran, DET, and JAC and only 1-3 against .500 or better teams like the skins, packers, falcons, and titans . beat the crappy teams, lose to the good teams and hope people are dumb enough to believe the team actually has a chance to win a SB. going 1-3 against good teams and 3-0 against crappola does not win a championship. neither does 60% passing which has NEVER won one superbowl in history. NEVER. Reid will NEVER win a SB. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AND HE WILL NEVER REALIZE THAT. REPEAT PROCESS OVER AND OVER.
Andy Reid's tenure as coach of Eagles does not need to be defended. He has accomplished numerous things that everyone is aware of. People like Eephus find minor flaws in coaches and players and blow them way out of proportion. All humans have flaws. No one is perfect. You guys have no concept of big picture. Just an emotional response to one loss. crazyeyes
"I thought Sean had a heckuva gameplan"
. . . and even if it wasn't so what! If you think I'm ever gonna change anything while a game is going on. You must be nuts. jimmyj- Sean McDermott is not ready to be a full defensive coord in this leauge, It's clear that teams go into games with the Eagles attacking his defensive soft spots JJ's teams always had the knack to adjust and overcome. McDermott is the problem with this team anyone that sees Ellis Hobbs as a starter on this team is the one with the real problem. citysims
This guy needs to go somewhere else. The whole Reid system is obsolete. jcpaul

against teams with a winning record, eagles are 1-3. the next 4 games are against teams that today have a winning record. the only teams the rest of the way that don't now have a winning record are the vikings and the cowboys. 8-8. cowpoke
They may have a good team, they just have a mediocre coach staff. In all the years Reid has been in the NFL, he still hasnt figured out clock management. It was embarrassing that he didnt know the clock starts again after a 30 second time out. The comments Reid had are the same comments he has been making for over a decade. Its ridiculous to say he is going to fix things....duh... tdoc
CSpangler- I guess you haven't been paying attention. This is Negadelphia. I have always thought Philly fans get way too much credit towards their intelligience. When they win they cheer and when they lose they boo. Really smart. notch44- Everybody, there's a book out by Jim Collins. It's called GOOD TO GREAT. Andy Reid said it all when he said he has a good football team. He's had plenty of those. But he is not a Level 5 leader that can take them to GREATNESS! Neither is the ownership. It starts with top level management, and if you don't start with the right people in the right seats and the wrong people off the bus, the best you can hope for is just mediocrity or being as Andy says "GOOD." deuce922

If Brian Westbrook was still on the team, AR would still be passing and giving the ball to Chad Hall who should be starting over Mike Bell jippy from camden- Where is Reid's team that is good? It's not in Philadelphia. Is the Big Guy talking about his fantasy league team? I can't wait until the next draft, when Andy takes more speedy, pint-sized players that no other team would touch, and then fill out his last-minute, waiver-wire offensive line! I am so glad we have this genius! Go, Andy go!!
The Elephant man speaks! I'm not an animal, I've got a good football team! watsonmr
JSaq: LOL. Thanks so much. mccloudmj- Mabus, you're making every Reid detractors point. Every year we see the same thing and the same refusal to address it. His players, his coaches, his poor time management and his need to control everything (that's why he surrounds himself with yes men)We've tried it his way, time to give someone else a shot.
Comment removed.- Crazy eyes open 'em up. If you did you'd see that the big picture is that people still care about this team so excuse us for not being satisfied. And the big picture is that Andy has hit his ceiling, seemingly. No progress since 2004. Good not great. That's fine if you are fine wiht that, but once you've gotten to good, what's wrong with wanting great? What's wrong with wanting things to really be fixed, insteead of lip service? An emotional response to one loss? oh if it were only one loss, instead of the same movie, year after year. Go ahead and call it hate, call it blowing things out of proportion. Enjoy the fair to good, with the same predictable ending. Eephus

Andy, no you don't. robertthomas
Sean McDermott is in over his head as defensive coordinator. We don't have time for him to learn on the job. Should have seen this from last year. benjluc
The team is the second youngest roster in the league... It's no excuse but it does mean there will be high and lows. This team will come back strong after the bye, like every other AR team, and will make a push going into the gauntlet of quarterbacks and division games we have left. eaglegreen22
