Reid: Bunkley could be done for the season

POSTED: Monday, October 11, 2010, 6:13 PM

Eagles defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley needs surgery on his left elbow and could be out for the year, coach Andy Reid said tonight on his radio show.

"He's going to have to have surgery on that elbow," Reid said. "That's not a good thing. He had ligament damage in there. The nerve to where your funny bone is, that nerve shifted and so they have to go in and straighten it out. It's not a career-ending thing, but it's going to take time to get him back."

Bunkley’s snaps have been down this year, with Trevor Laws finally playing effectively and last year’s undrafted free agent find, Antonio Dixon, settling into a stronger role in the defensive tackle rotation. Dixon stepped in for Bunkley Sunday night and notched his first sack of the season.

Bunkley was injured while attempting to make a tackle on San Francisco's first possession and the arm was bent back.

Also, left tackle Jason Peters potentially has cartilage damage in his knee, Reid said. Peters underwent an MRI today and is scheduled for further evaluation.

"He can't support his weight on it, so it collapses on him," Reid said.

King Dunlap replaced Peters Sunday night after he was injured.

If Peters is unvailable this week against Atlanta, and the Eagles decide Dunlap isn’t the answer, they could move left guard Todd Herremans outside and play Reggie Wells in Herremans’ spot, though Reid did not bring up this possibility on his show. Reid did not do his normal day-after news conference because of the late trip back from the West coast.

Reid said he expects both cornerback Asante Samuel and wide receiver Riley Cooper to be both this week. Both sat out with concussions.

He said Michael Vick is making progress, but would not commit to Vick returning Sunday.

Good thing the commish wants to play 18-games a season.

Shadie McCoy played well, but in the words of Don Mc, he showed his youth, when flopping down before getting a First, late in the game. He will learn,...I hope!

@ Rick- The only thing that didn't bother me about that play was that he was trying to be smart. Needs to work on that field awareness though....

@Rick. I agree with phillyphaninchi (I live in Chicago too). I think that was only first or second down when he avoided a potentially lethal three person tackle. It is smart not to fight for a half yard and lose the ball at that situation in the game. Every team is really hurting this year. It is amazing. They should shorten the season!

I hope Jeff owens is ready. Dunlap at least looks like a tackle.

Yo owners of the paper/website: a little overboard on the word "both"? Also maybe a little proofreading is in order-or maybe you don't pay people to do that anymore....

KimThL - I'm sure the owners of the paper are combing every blog post looking for word choice.

Geez. Having injuries is one thing, but what the Eagles have going on is crazy. Five games into the season and we have already lost 3 key starters for the year, with other starters missing some games here and there. If Peters knee is an issue, add another offensive line starter to the shelf. And its not like our line was good to begin with. Good luck Vick and/or Kolb.

this is really ridiculous. how many players did they lose last year for the entire season? now it's happening again? how is it that we can play football for years and years and not see one player ever get seriously injured, but every week an eagles starter goes down?

I never seen a team get as many injuries as the Eagles they are truely cursed! No championships since 1960. Well not as cursed as the Lions.

Shouldn't somebody named "King Dunlap" be the best? How else did he get the name "King".

Or course, they gave a guy the name "Macho" on the team when it was clear he was less macho than the kicker.

Anyway, the team has so many holes and flaws that it hardly matters. If you take the attitude they aren't going anywhere anyway, you're simply entertained by these guys. They're mostly inept, but occasionally they surprise you by sinking to a new low.

They should check out the Philly Lingerie League team. Those women look a little tougher than the guys on the field. McCoy excepted of course. He gained 92 yards with a broken rib. They could call him Macho and it would actually work.

IF King Dunlap isn't the answer?!?? IF?!! Please release him like 5 minutes ago. I'd venture to say his performance was worse than Justice when he got torched by Use for 6 sacks or whatever. Umeniora was just blowing Justice off the ball, Dunlap got tossed around like a rag doll over and over again
