Reid: 'We all stunk'
Daily News staff
Andy Reid was pretty succinct in his postgame press conference about his team's performance in Pittsburgh.
"We all stunk tonight," Reid said after the Eagles' 24-14 loss, with the two Eagles scores coming on fourth-quarter drives by Mike Kafka.
"Neither [stopping the run or the pass] were good on defense and then on offense we didn't run it good and we didn't pass it good," Reid said. "All the way around, starting with me, working through the coaches and the players, we all stunk tonight."
Reid stressed there is not a lot of gameplanning done in the preseason but said the team needs to do better with the fundamentals.
"Too many turnovers and our inability to get off the field against a great football team," Reid said. "There are great lessons to be learned. You come into a good football team's house here and have to make sure you bring your A game."
Reid said he did not think Michael Vick's rough night had anything to do with the day's controversy surrounding an interview in GQ magazine. "He wasn't the only one; we all stunk," Reid said. He added there was no temptation to play Vick into the third quarter.
The Eagles' defense could not get off the field in the first half, with the Steelers easily winning the time of possession battle. The Eagles had the ball for only 3:03.
"We had opportunities to get off the field," Reid said. "It's important that we learn from that and make plays when you have the opportunity to make plays. That's how this games works."
Reid was unwilling to say that the injuries to the defensive tackles made it more difficult for the young linebackers, who struggled.
"I expect the next person to get in and play," Reid said of the replacements at d-tackle. "It's that simple. That's what I expect."
On the injury front,
* Jason Avant has right knee tendinitis and was taken out of the game for a bit.
* Trent Cole has an elbow injury. Reid said the bursa had been swollen and swelled up again.
* Daniel Teo'Nesheim has a hamstring injury.

To date Birds biggest problem ? DC. Looked a lot like last year, too many breakdowns. What is our defensive Philosophy ? Other than small LBs. They got Rogers and Nnamdi and don't know what to do with Rogers. i think the trade market for either was not what they expected. We try to run the blitz from Asante's side every team knows it and that particular blitz only worked when BDawk ran it anyway. Where is the new Defensive stuff ? Warmed over JJ D that only JJ could teach and coach. Are we a stop the run then the pass D ? Does not look like it. Are we a blitz D ? Does not look like it. Check out NE, Steelers, Jets...they have a D plan. Hope is not a plan. oldBird
The Steelers stunk last week and they ARE a superbowl caliber team. Everybody needs a taste of humble pie once in a while. AerielPhenom
We have a bunch of skinny guys and midgets for Vick's receiver targets. Only pre-season, but we'll be lucky to win the NFC-East. DallasEagle

I agree they all stink. lostInPhilly
I think they played bad last night, but will get better. They still are too small at LB. Teams like the Pats, Giants, Jets will all run it down our throat and won't need to worry about the pass rush. On offense they need to stop with the short drops with Vick, when he's close to the line of scrimmage he can't see the field as well. jss31
I agree with Frank105. Last night, in an unimportant preseason game, we had a chance to compare the two teams. On offense, maybe one or two Eagles might make the Steelers team. On Defense maybe three Eagles could make the Steelers team. WE spent a lot of money, but we still are not as good as the Steelers, the Patriots, and the Colts. THe Eagles are not as good as the Packers, the Saints, and probably a healthy Cowboys and Giants team.
More importantly, two years ago we had a quarterback that was in the top ten in the league, now he plays for the Vikings. We decided to go to the qb of the future, and we gave him one game to prove himself; now he plays with the Cardinals. WE are left with a guy who, when he gets trapped behind the line, can be pressured into throwing interceptions. Our backup is a guy who sold out his teams on two different teams. And we don't have a young quarterback to "groom". How is this better?
There are eight teams on our schedule that can do what Pittsburgh did last night. And the fact that the dream team label has been placed on this squad will certainly get some teams upset. I don't think a Superbowl is in our future. angrybear
I have an Offensive Line Coach pretending to be a Defensive Coordinator...and our D sucks because of it. Times yours. kelprod2
The eagles are just trying to manage expectations. They stunk it up on purpose to undermine all the dream team talk. Leegles

Lucky this game didn't count for anything, but it should be a wake up call for the Eagles. They're not nearly as good as they've been hyped up to be. I expect a much better performance next week against the Browns. SteveS11
this is preseason! jeeze... pflipper
I swear is it just me or does Andy Reid only have like 3 or 4 different post game speeches? I can swear that he has a different speech for a good game, bad game and an okay game and has just kept repeating them for like 13 years. It was all of us. We can all learn from this. We can all get better as a team. I think I could say that one in my sleep for heavens sake. golson@florida
Don't worry, the Eagles play the stinkin' Browns next week at home.
Vick and the Eagles will beat weak teams like the Browns...it's the GOOD teams they can't beat. frank105
correction, you all stink. snakeplissken
Nnamdi Asomugha was not even targeted all game long but the rest of the secondary looked terrible. Nate Allen got beat by Hines Ward on a 3rd and 18, Asante got beat on a double move and Hanson was flat out awful in coverage all game. Offense looked just as bad turning the ball over. The Eagles better fix these things and quickly. Thank god it is preseason but this game was terrible to watch for Eagles Fans. Better bring there A++++ game vs Browns next week. briandawkins20
