Reid: Fixing D Sooner 'Hindsight'
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
Andy Reid spoke at great length to reporters Friday, but nothing he said changed the reality of the 4-10 Eagles' sad sack season.
Reid said it was "hindsight" to suggest that if he had jettisoned defefnsive line coach Jim Washburn (and maybe DE Jason Babin) a lot earlier, his defense wouldn't have looked so helpless for so long. He didn't say it was "wrong," he said it was "hindsight." He also said Tommy Brasher, who has produced eight sacks in two games as defensvie line coach, has "done a nice job."
Reid agreed that getting rid of Washburn's wide nine setup has dramatically helped the safeties, and he said that benefit also extends to the corners.
Reid said running back LeSean McCoy probably will see an independent neurologist for concussion game clearance on Tuesday. Michael Vick and Brent Celek are cleared, Reid said. He said he has not decided whether Vick will be active Dec. 23 vs. Washington; he said he would have to see what the activation picture looks like then at other positions.
Reid said that fumble-prone rookie running back Bryce Brown needs to play to develop, and that is why Reid has put up with four fumbles in four starts. Brown, 21, barely played college football.
Asked how tough this season has been for him, after losing his son Garrett to a drug overdose in training camp, Reid said his own tragedy has had nothing to do with the way the season has gone.
Reid listed the lethal sequence of turnovers that transformed a 13-10 Eagles lead into a 31-13 deficit within a span of three and a half minutes Thursday night.
Reid said corner Brandon Hughes spent the night in the hospital after suffering a lung contusion against the Bengals, but is home now.
He said guard Evan Mathis, who aggravated an ankle injury, should be OK by Washington. Ditto FB Stnaley Havili (hamstring).
"Turnovers destroy ya," Reid said. "If we didn't know that before this season, we know it now."
Really looking forward to the first postgame news conference by the new coach. No matter who it is. Oy vey. eaglefaninAZ
same moron writers and fans who attack Reid (justifiably so) hypocritically defend a much bigger imbecile, the Clueless Rube --both have won zero championships but Clueless Rube had much bigger advantages that he squandered away (inherited a terrifc farm system that he squandered and one of the biggest budgets in baseball, whereas Reid built his team from nothing before reaching the wall and had no built-in budget advantages) warbiscuit- wardipstick - you might not have noticed, but this is about the Eagles.
do you see anyone in here sniveling about the Flyers?
nope.
and there's a reason for that.
it's a FOOTBALL article.
go cry about the Phaillies somewhere else.
ekw555 - Your assessment of Amaro may ultimately be correct, but he was doing what everyone wanted him to do and applauded, and what he should've done: namely take chances and pull out the stops to try to take advantage of an aging, championship-potential core, to try to get one more ring from this group. It hasn't worked out. It was worth trying and it was a good try--they were very competitive in 2009, 2010, and 2011. They could've won in '09 if Hamels and LIdge had been their 08 selves. In '10, they ran into the Giants who have proven they are quite a capable franchise and can play with anyone. They lost--so be it. In '11, they had the best team, but they stumbled into the post-season with a rickety lineup laced with injuries. Half the lineup should've been on the DL. That's why championships are hard to win. Things don't always go as planned.
Team was built to lose. Soft in too many positions. camasbud
Stnaley Havili ? ekw555
How do players who make well over a million dollars each season play like this ? Also, its the coaches role to get his team ready each week; Andy has obviously failed in this regard (and many other regards as well) and so he should be fired. BobSG
Mr. Lurie: Call Ron Jaworski and make him an offer in the front office. WHY:
1. Knows football
2. Great evaluator of players
3. Local commute, would not have to pay for moving fees
4. The fans love and respect him.
5. Great communicator
6. Knows the media
7. Former Eagle
8. Could be a big help w/ a quarterback
9. Won't sit on the practice field with head phones on (HOWIE)
10. The man bleeds GREEN, Hire JAWS!!!!! stang66302- You mean the Jaworksi most recently seen declaring what a great season Vick has had "except for the turnovers." Oh. Turnovers don't matter. :)
Getting rid of Kurt Coleman due to injury has dramatically helped the safeties.
Anderson is no NFL starter, but the guy he replaced isn't even a CFL starter. banned
Your fired ANDY times yours! Cactusclarke
"Reid said his own tragedy has had nothing to do with the way the season has gone." IT HASN'T? If you took the season off to get your "family in the right position to grieve", maybe the Eagles wouldn't be half as bad. No matter. This season is done. Time to get reay for a REAL Philly football team. GO SOUL! Panthro2011
So Reid says that "his own tragedy has had nothing to do with the way the season has gone", and "turnovers destroy ya". Well, yes, turnovers destroyed the season, but I hold Andy accountable for the awful season for one reason: I lost a son to drugs in much the same manner that Reid did, that is, after he was "Going straight", but still taking pharmaceuticals and such. This is a man in total denial who has not yet dealt with his personal tragedy, and thinks he can pigeonhole those feelings into a compartment and not have it affect the way he does his job and lives his life. Man, it even effects the way you breathe. He should have recognized his humanity and emotions that go with that, bitten the bullet and taken a year leave of absence -- for his own good and the good of the team. Instead, he thought that he would be "manly" and take a couple days off and go back to work. Sheer insanity -- Lurie should have MADE HIM take the year off. IF he had, Reid and the Eagles would both be in far better shape today. Thinking that is own personal burnout did not affect his players negatively -- not to mention his asinine decisions -- is sheer lunacy, and is irresponsible as well. tbjama
Right on, Panthro2011 tbjama
You are right on @ Stang66! I've been calling for Jaws in the chief front office position for months. Who could better restore the respectability of the franchise? HIREJAWSFIRST is a facebook page where you can show you support that idea. Stop by and give it a like if you have a second. Maybe we can get a drumbeat going for the idea; I can't imagine anybody who is better suited for the job. bentlip
