Reid: Not worrying about job status
Daily News staff
With his team at 4-8, coach Andy Reid said questions about his job status are "logical questions" but that he was not worrying about that.
"As a coach, you don’t do that," he said at his day-after news conference. "I’m being as honest as I can with you. I don’t worry about that. I worry about getting better, and that’s where I put all of my energy in. That’s what I can control and become a better football coach, and make my assistants better while at the same time, make my players better.”
As he was after last night's game, Reid was asked about the focus of his team, especially as the season has slipped away.
"The focus is there," Reid said. "I think when you are losing, you almost push too hard in certain situations. You get into the what-ifs. You have to really fight that as opposed to where it just flows like it has before and in the games that we've had success."
He was asked what he tells the players now, especially as some of them could be playing for jobs next season.
"I'm honest with them," he said. "I make sure that I am shooting their way straight, including myself. I'm very real with the players. I've got a good locker room where they will work hard. What do you do now? You just continue to try to get better. That's the approach now. This is all of your business so we can all get better at it."
Obviously, the expectations have not met the reality for this team.
"I said this during training camp, there is a difference between expectations and reality," he said. "The reality is that every year you have to come together as a football team, coaches and players all working together and pulling the rope in the tug of war in the same direction. So, I think we’re all searching. The players, these guys want to win as professional athletes. They want to win and be successful. Coaches want to win and be successful. Everybody is looking for that answer right now, and you’re going to get a variety of answers from different individuals and I’m not worried about that. What I am worried about is what do we need to do to get better and get those answers out there, then work on those in practice.”
Asked to explain how they got here, Reid said he has explained what went wrong each week. He pointed to turnovers, penalties, and red zone issues. He also took the blame.
"I look at the facts of it and I will also say that it’s my fault for not putting the guys in the right position to make plays. And I believe that it comes back to the head coach and that’s where it should come back to," he said.
Reid was asked whether he had spoken with owner Jeffrey Lurie about Lurie's disappointment with the season.
"Jeffrey is very competitive so he’s disappointed as we all are,” Reid said.
Reid said he will not change the evaluation process that he uses before the team plays next, at Miami.

This team is a mess. If you only watched one game all year and it happened to be last night's, you have no choice but to clean house. If I'm the owner, I call in Coach Reid and ask him what he was thinking when he didn't call a timeout with 40 seconds left in the half. That failure alone is enough to can the guy. But there's plenty of blame to go around. Someone please tell me the last first round draft choice of this team that lived up to expectations? McMabb? And do you seriously want DeSean Jackson in your clubhouse after the way he's played, or not played. HE QUIT ON THE TEAM! No excuse. Juan Castillo has been a complete and utter failure. This was declared the Super Bowl year. It's time to go in another direction. Wake up, guys, or you'll be asking yourselves again next year, what went wrong. floridajim50
I CANT STAND ANDY REID.I SUPPORTED HIM FOR YEARS,BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.IT IS CLEAR HE HAS LOST THE TEAM.IT IS DISGRACEFUL.HE CANT PICK TALENT,DRAFT,MANAGE THE CLOCK,MAKE CHANGES ON THE FLY,COACH GAME DAY OR EVEN BE HONEST WITH THE FANS. HE STINKS! 2 QUARTERBACKS WITH ISSUES HE HOOKS US UP WITH. WHATS HIS DEAL? HIS JOB IS FOOTBALL,NOT REDEEMING LOST SOULS.LET HIM GO BACK TO UTAH AND JOIN A MISSIONARY TO DO THAT.HE REMINDS ME OF JOHN LUCAS WHO COACHED THE SIXERS. IS IT MANDATED IN THE NFL BYLAWS THAT THE EAGLES HAVE TO HAVE A BLACK QUARTERBACK?YOU WOULD THINK SO BASED ON OUR HISTORY. LOOK AT ALL THE SUPERBOWLS WE WON.OH! NONE.NONE.NONE.CAN WE HAVE A CHANGE PLEASE. bob attitude
I can't take it anymore! This is my 40th year watching the Birds and we are back to the good old 70s again.
I believe that Reid gave up actual control of the team to Banner when he took the leave of absence. But even before that he didnt' get. Unfortunately, as long as Lurie blindly lets Banner have his way, the Eagles are doomed! Remember it was Lurie who had to have a "West Coast" offense when "BIG RED" came on and I don't even know what that was that we wasted time on last night!
Glad I have my Phils 6pack! lgm4885
Fire Reid, Castillo and Mornhinweg. Bring in Dom Capers as HC. wvp
Fans should just not show up then lets see if he gets worried. That won't help him see either, I think he is just like most of the players on the team, show me the money and thats it. krautmef1
We need Donovan back here today whilly
One more year for Andy....if he makes it to the Superbowl then more.

I think they will bring Fisher in as D cordinator and eventual replacement for Andy in two years, he worked with Washburn, so it will be a nice fit. On offense look for birds to pick up another quality TE, and have more two TE formations near goal line to help with red zone offense. My guess is that Howie will be demoted, and another talent person will be hired. Look for major major changes at linebacker and safety, last but not least, Lurie will force Andy to have a specialist coach on sideline to help with clock management. camasbud
They drafted LeSean McCoy. Not bad. 2smart4philly
Andy's like a fat Alfred E. Newman... djw26
There is no longer any question that Jim Johnson was the Heart, Soul and Cunning Mind that catapulted Reid into Coaching prominence. Since Jim's departure (Heckert also) the wheels have been falling off at a steady pace. Without Johnson's presence, talented players, who were on field leaders (Dawkins) were discarded. How'd that work out for you Andy? You'd be hard pressed to find an inspirational leader like Dawk anywhere on this team. Reid lost this team when he made Castillo the DC. I can't imagine the Defense being very happy about their new Boss and his DUMBING DOWN THE DEFENSE TO HELP THEM!!! Banner contributed to the implosion of the team by hiring his lapboy, Howie "the Accountant" as GM. All this Putzwaffle has done is draft two years worth of Players that, unfortunately, can't play a lick in the NFL. On the bright side, we do have a Fireman on hand in case there are any wastepaper basket fires in the clubhouse! Jeff Lurie, are you watching any of these games? Do you know what the word "ACCONTABILITY" means? Philly Fans are anxious to hear what you think about your 4 and 8 Gold Standard now! younged- Lurie is hiding from the media AND the fans. He doesn't want to feel the heat. What a coward. essell
Comment removed.- Well said, but LURIE will only listen when we as fans CLOSE OUR WALLETS....
PhillyguyinVA - Go ahead... fire Andy. That team down in North Texas would love to see that. No matter who shows up to take Andy's place... and it won't be Cowher, 'cuz he be liking his current easy-money gig far too much... no matter who replaces Andy, the Buzzards will wallow around in mediocrity for the rest of this decade, and poor Michael Vick will become even more confused than he already is...
