Reid: Not worrying about job status

With his team at 4-8, coach Andy Reid said questions about his job status are "logical questions" but that he was not worrying about that.

"As a coach, you don’t do that," he said at his day-after news conference. "I’m being as honest as I can with you. I don’t worry about that. I worry about getting better, and that’s where I put all of my energy in. That’s what I can control and become a better football coach, and make my assistants better while at the same time, make my players better.”

As he was after last night's game, Reid was asked about the focus of his team, especially as the season has slipped away.

"The focus is there," Reid said. "I think when you are losing, you almost push too hard in certain situations. You get into the what-ifs. You have to really fight that as opposed to where it just flows like it has before and in the games that we've had success."

He was asked what he tells the players now, especially as some of them could be playing for jobs next season.

"I'm honest with them," he said. "I make sure that I am shooting their way straight, including myself. I'm very real with the players. I've got a good locker room where they will work hard. What do you do now? You just continue to try to get better. That's the approach now. This is all of your business so we can all get better at it."

Obviously, the expectations have not met the reality for this team.

"I said this during training camp, there is a difference between expectations and reality," he said. "The reality is that every year you have to come together as a football team, coaches and players all working together and pulling the rope in the tug of war in the same direction. So, I think we’re all searching. The players, these guys want to win as professional athletes. They want to win and be successful. Coaches want to win and be successful. Everybody is looking for that answer right now, and you’re going to get a variety of answers from different individuals and I’m not worried about that. What I am worried about is what do we need to do to get better and get those answers out there, then work on those in practice.”

Asked to explain how they got here, Reid said he has explained what went wrong each week. He pointed to turnovers, penalties, and red zone issues. He also took the blame.

"I look at the facts of it and I will also say that it’s my fault for not putting the guys in the right position to make plays. And I believe that it comes back to the head coach and that’s where it should come back to," he said.

Reid was asked whether he had spoken with owner Jeffrey Lurie about Lurie's disappointment with the season.

"Jeffrey is very competitive so he’s disappointed as we all are,” Reid said.

Reid said he will not change the evaluation process that he uses before the team plays next, at Miami.

By franchising Jackson, that means he would have to be paid the average of th etop five receivers in the league. That's getting near Fitzgerald money. Who would then take that trade? Jackson could play harder, but why? He was lied to by Reid for the last year. Always promised that a new contract was just waiting over the next horizon. First, had to wait for the new CBA. THen, had to get the new players in. Then if you want to talk contract, report to camp. Then, we had to sign Vick first. Then we had to give washed-up receiver Smith a few million, but hey, your day will come. Jackson came into camp so he would lose this year and have to give another year before becoming a FA. He kept his mouth shut. How long was he supposed to wait after watching Reid shell out the big bucks? The knock is that they don't want to pay money to someone who could get knocked out on any play. Isn't that what they said before giving Vick $100 mil?

It took Cowher 14 years to win in Pittsburgh. You want to wait 14 more years? I don't

If a few players don't perform, it's their fault. When most don't perform, it's the coach. After 13 years, you can't blame anyone else. He picked 'em, trained 'em, motivated 'em. If they stink, he stinks.

Worried? Why should he be worried? It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Lurie calls a news conference at 4 p.m. today announcing they just signed Reid to an extension as a "vote of confidence".

Me either. But, given the mood of the fans, that would be the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back.

Reid is getting exposed as the fraud he is. Should never of had this much responsibility. He's a offensive coordinator at best.

I agree. A classic example of the Peter Principle if ever there were one.

Get Dom Capers in here to become HC as well as DC and let him install a 3-4 defense. Then have him hire a young, talented OC that knows when to run and when to throw the football. Then hire some real scouts and a real GM (Mike Mayock?) to evaluate talent and draft the right personnel.

I think Reid's pressers have actually been very telling this year. He has consistently blamed penalties and turnovers as the primary (if not only) issues to be addressed, despite much evidence to the contrary. He does not call out lack of effort or discipline, even in a general sense, when it's in his best interest to do so. He has always been stubborn, but never this blind.

Lurie, no doubt, is getting more specifics explaining the lack of success on the field. But whatever he's being told, it's fairly apparent that the 2011 version of the Philadelphia Eagles has all the hallmarks of a poorly coached team. The fact that there are pockets of talent on the roster only adds to the frustration and complexity of the situation. If it were me, I'd go ahead and pull the plug on Andy after this year, and get a new coach and GM in that can take next year to both capitalize on the what we currently have, and assess whether the team can win a super bowl with Vick. If you wait another year, it increases the chances that the organization will have to totally bottom out before climbing back to respectability.
