Reid: Eagles Sticking with Wide 9, Juan

POSTED: Monday, October 10, 2011, 12:18 PM
Andy Reid and the Eagles are 1-4, marking their worst start since Reid's first season. (Sarah J. Glover/Staff Photographer)

Should the Eagles fire head coach Andy Reid before the end of the season?
Yes. Something has to be done to salvage this season.
No. Firing the coach during the season won’t help.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said he has no plans to scrap the "wide 9" defensive front that defensive line coach Jim Washburn brought to the team this season. Reid also affirmed that Juan Castillo will remain defensive coordinator.

The Eagles are among the worst teams in the league against the run, and were gashed early against Buffalo.

"You obviously saw it worked the second half very effectively," Reid said. "Anything new, you have to work with and work out the wrinkles and get it right. They players have to learn it, the coaches have to learn it. it’s a joint effort there."

Asked what the Eagles did better in the second half that allowed them to improve against the run, Reid said, "We tackled better. I thought the defensive ends and tackles did a better job up front. I thought Juan did a good job of getting the players in a position that we wanted."

Bills players were dismissive of the scheme and of the Eagles, marveling over how easily they moved through the Birds.

Reid repeated the mantra that his 1-4 team will keep working hard to get the problems they are facing corrected. He stressed fundamentals, particularly in relation to turnovers, which have kept an explosive offense grounded. The Birds have a minus-10 turnover differential.

"We’re going to work our tail off to get it right," Reid siad. "We’re not backing off a lick. That’s our approach."

Sports Illustrated's Peter King, in his Monday Morning Quarterback feature today, called the Eagles "sloppy and dumb." King analyzed the play where Michael Vick threw an interception to Nick Barnett that Barnett ran in for a touchdown. King said rookie center Jason Kelce ran past the blitzer who forced Vick to unload, in order to double-team a defender who was already being blocked.

Asked about his team having that image, Reid said, "Everybody can have their opinion. We don’t worry about those things. We worry about getting better and fixing the situation that we need to fix. It’s America. Everybody can do that. We need to make sure we focus on the things that we need to get better at."

Asked whether the team is still listening to him, Reid said, "I think all the guys are in."

"It's my football team," he said. "I've got to get it right. We'll do this thing as a football team. You talk to the guys and some of the coaches, everybody is being accountable. We've just to work through it, and get it right. That's the best thing about football. It's a team sport."

On the injury front, safety Jarrad Page has a stinger. Reid said he was being checked out.

Defensive end Trent Cole and left tackle Jason Peters did not play Sunday and Reid said it would be a stretch for them to be ready against Washington. He said both players were making progress.

Asked whether he thought the players were pressing, Reid said, “Do they want to win a game? Absolutely, so do the coaches and everybody else. There is a certain process you can through and you go through it. I wouldn’t say a tipped ball is pressing. I don’t see that as a problem with the turnovers.”

Overall: “There are some good things we can do to take out of this game. I explained this to the team when things are not looking good in people’s eyes. I thought the effort was good. And as the game went on, we got better. The thing that has to change is the obvious is the turnovers. You don’t turn it over, you get better results … You can’t give good football teams 10 points off of turnovers … With that, we’ll go back and work on those things and we’ll get better as we go forward and maintain the intensity level we had particularly through the second half. I thought we did some good things there.”

Asked how he can correct the turnover issue, Reid said: “I’ve said this before, it’s important from my seat to make sure I evaluated to put the players in the right position to make plays and if the player is put in the right position that he makes the play. I would like to go that evaluation first. I go through with the coaches on both sides and I do the same things with players as do the coaches. You go back and eliminate turnovers and, ‘Are we concentrating? Are we moving our feet or whatever it might be that is causing the turnovers?

On personnel changes: “I haven’t done anything today.”

About making changes during the bye week, “I’m glad we have a chance to play the Washington Redskins this week and I don’t worry about anything after that week.”

Get over it already. He's gone and he's not coming back. Philly people like to live in the past. The Beagles stink and deservedly so for their arrogance in the pre-season. This is what the pathetic goon fans deserve. Ha ha.

The only way we will get rid of Andy Reid and Juan Castillo is divine intervention. Because we all know Lurie who is Reid's biggest fan is not going to fire him like we all know he should. Lurie do the right thing fire him

Im not sure about that. Lurie just wrote some very large checks for free agents. Rich people do not enjoy losing money with no results. He has to be in the box wondering what he just spent millions on.

The better position is to do the same thing week in and week out. Andy is a terrible coach who cannot adapt. The Patriots ran the ball down the Jets throats because they knew that's how to win that game. Unless Reid can change his philosophy, which is not going to happen, long drawn out plays will continually get Vick killed.

Let's face it.Andy didn't fumble, didn't jump offsides, didn't throw 4 picks. The day after Washington spanks us, Andy should pack everything up and head back to Lehigh for two weeks. Maybe they'll come back a different, if not better, team.

Andy picks the players... he has the final say in all personnel decisions. Who drafted these guys? Andy. Who made his OL Coach defensive coordinator? Andy! Who's fault that this team plays undisciplined and sloppy - this team has been the most penalized for the last few years? Andy! Who didn't correct the fumbling issues from the week before? Much of this falls on Andy!!!!

We have one of the better RBs in the league and we only give him 10 carries a week. Yet when you drop back to pass, 3 things can happen and 2 of those are bad... makes sense!

When you have guys not focused and making mistakes they shouldn't make and guys having no interest in tackling and waiting for someone else to make a play instead of making a play themselves you got big time issues. Doesn't look like Reid has this team, that was evident when DRC jogged after missing a tackle. The only guy who is working hard is Vick and he's trying too hard to make a play and gives the other team points. Maybe DRC is upset because he's a nickle back and maybe Ashante is upset because he's trade bait. The secondary is terrible having 3 pro bowl corners and giving up big plays and TDs. Poor Juan, first and last year as a defensive coordinator. He may not even get a job as an offensive line coach after this year. Might be time to look for a job at the high school level.

What else would you expect him to say.....Ego driven, arrogant and stubborn, Andy will not change......and, am I missing something.....how did a man who has never won the only thing that counts get so high on himself....Hello Jeffery, Joe......Time to have a closed door meeting with Andy and remind him of the quote, "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insantatiy.." Remember the wide ( exposes his DT' and LB's lack of talent but no worries...."It is my responsibilty" and that is all Jeffery needs to know....He is responsible for the quality of his players and the facts are he has 13 no talents in the starting lineups.......Pull the trigger Jeff

Say what yu want, but the wide 9 bs is the reason for the downfall of the defense. Juan had no control over that. This was not the off season to put in a whole new defensive scheme especially given that we had none of the needed players for that type of defense. It was doomed no matter who ran the defense and never should have been done.

we need new players who know how to tackle....no ...who actually like to tackle! These DB/S suck!!!! The CB's probably can only play man but we're not putting them in that position and they suck in zone as it requires them to tackle. Either change the DB'S (and cut Page) or change the scheme to man. Juan is failing and his rope should be at the end by now.

I have heard they are expermenting with the wide 11 and 13 to further confuse the opponent. With the wide 13 your D ends bumb the wide receiver than attack the QB. It's a slow developing pass rush, but boy when they get there, they are moving.

He keeps saying that they are working hard to get it right. And that he has to get better at putting them in the right position to make plays. How long can he be allowed to "get better"? How long to they give a player the chance to get better before they trade him? It's time for Andy to go. He's not getting better. He's not progressing. He still can't control the clock for christsakes!

This wide 9 is awful. The quarterback sneak gained 9 yards yesterday. The players are too far spread out. The ends are 25 yards away from the football and don't even need to be blocked when the other team runs the ball up the middle.

The Eagles have D line personnel appropriated for the wide 9. They don't have the Line backing personnel needed to fill the gaps and tackle tho. Bringing up the safeties doesn't help much either since they're not good tacklers. When the Eagle bring up the safeties, the opponents send their receivers long and pass over the lbs and safeties and underneath the corners. Not rocket science here.

Jarrod Paige is absolutely brutal. He cannot cover anyone, he blitzes and takes bad angles and when he actually does get a body on the ball carrier he rarely brings him down. This guy should be released, and included Parker in that also. After the first half of last year, Parker performed poorly.

As for the linebackers what more can be said, it was nice that we spotted one of them making a play - Chaney. Most of them are pancaked on every running play so you do not even see them in the picture.

    This is a train wreck.

Fire Reid now, to allow a new coach Gruden to come in and have a 1/2 season to evaluate personnel. This way they go into the offseason with a strategy both in the draft and in free agency rather than bringing in a coach who has to evaluate personnel off tape or next summer.

the Eagles have 11 games left
    in no order:
    2 vs Washington
    2 vs Cowboys
    1 vs Giants
    Chicago
    Arizona
    New England
    Miami
    Jets
    Seattle

let's give them a W against Miami, Seattle & Arizona
that would bring them to 4-4
give them an L on New England makes 4-5
then they have to win 6 of the other 7 games to have much of a shot.

do you really see that happening?

Oddly, when you put it that way, I could see them sweeping the division games remaining, plus a win over the skidding Jets or the run game-less Bears. I have little faith in Reid (or the Eagles) at this point, but you make it interesting — they are quite talented.
    Bear with me:
If they were to abandon the Wide 9 completely, play a traditional defense of press-man coverage, very little blitzing and pressure only from the front four (I'll say it again, scant to no blitzing), plug in Jarrett for Page (for the love of all that is holy) as he might at least lay some wood.
Next, offensively, stop it with the trickery. the twin back sets offer good pass coverage and Harbour can catch surprisingly well, so two tight end sets will also help. Let Vick run loose and give the ball to Shady on the outside (does AR remember Westbrook in the flat?) and try to beat DTs and blitzing corners around the bend with the speed rather than muscle them with the non-existent line blocking.
Use Owen Scmidt to block, not run it in from the 1.
If AR chose even some of these things, the Cowboys, Giants (lost to the lowly Seachickens yesterday) and even the Skins are beatable for sure. Add miami, seattle and AZ and there you have 9 wins — Bears or Jets and you're likely in.
Will it happen? Not likely, because Reid has never proven to be an innovator who takes on problems with creative solutions, but...well...never mind — 4-12 at best.

Reid on turnovers: ".......are we moving our feet?" What is he talking about?

Andy can you even see your feet? The guy is clueless as to how to solve the problem he's created and every press conference goes through the kind old psycho-babble. There is no way they can salvage even a 6-10 season, so Lurie/Banner needs to write this one off and do what should have been done after 2007.

Chuckie, Dungee, Cowher all have year-to-year contracts with the various networks that expire after this season. Any one of them is able to turn the franchise around and make the changes that Reid refuses to admit are necessary. Reid subscribes to the NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome", if he didn't think of it, it can't be a good idea.

Its not only andy...yeah he sucks but the players need to make plays. The play like they dont care about winning and someone should school Michael Pick on how to carry the football with 2 hands when he runs with it.

I remember how jazzed everyone was to see that picture of Juan Castillo going face-to-face with and screaming at that player (I forget who)in training camp. I laughed at it, knowing the player was also laughing under his face mask. No one respects Castillo on the defense, period. No true defensive player would or should.

"Bills players were dismissive of the scheme and of the Eagles, marveling over how easily they moved through the Birds." This one line from the story is as damning as it gets. The Bills -- NOT THE PACKERS, NOT THE PATRIOTS!! -- were dismissive of the Eagles. Note to Mr. Lurie: fire Reid now or Eagles fans soon will be dismissive of your team when you ask them to pony up big bucks for tickets.

Who really expects Andy to change something? He made the original decisions that got the Eagles into this mess and his steadfast refusal to change something that isn't working is exactly his MO since becoming head coach.

I wonder how much money the Birds could raise if they charged fans $100 to punch Andy Reid in his fat face.

You know, I'm as pi$$ed as anyone about what Andy Reid has done to this team and how he treats the fans, but it's stupid comments like this that really are too much.

@1980...the actual quote is "Eagles coach Andy Reid said he has no plans to scrap the "wide 9" defensive front that defensive line coach Jim Washburn brought to the team this season".

The way this defense plays against the run, I believe if Stephen Jackson doesn't pull a "hammy" in game one,....he would've continued running all over us and the record would really be 0-5..imo

ekw555: would you have expected losses to Buffalo and the Niners at home? We all know that there's no way to predict how the balls will bounce on Sunday. The Eagles haven't been blown out yet -- and mostly they've beaten themselves. Remember that feeling from the fourth quarter of the last game when you started to have hope again. They're not a terrible team. They're inconsistent, and there's a lot of football left to play. The Skins might collapse. The Eagles might win the wild card and get hot late as they usually do. All I'm saying is that, as a fan of the team, focus on the positive and trust that they'll pull out games, especially once some of the bounces go their way . . .

Andy Reid knows very well that to fire Juan Castillo now would be a blatant admission of a huge mistake. A mistake that could and should get him fired. He's all but saying that this is the underlying problem with the defense.
"Anything new, you have to work with and work out the wrinkles and get it right. The players have to learn it, the coaches have to learn it. it’s a joint effort there." Wow, that sure does not sound like the big talk of a month ago.

The defense played better when Buffalo shut down their offense. The Bills marched right through the Birdz to open the 2nd half - then went into protection mode. they took no chances. they were not going to ROMO the lead away.
Andy is once again deluding himself. He CAN'T fire Juan. Firing Juan would be almost like firing himself. He will never admit that much of a mistake.

Every single comment seems written by the same fair-weather Philly fan who's only happy if a team wins a championship, the sort of loser who walks around wearing the same CHAMPS shirt even if it's been a few years since a parade. Rampant negativity at this point in the season is pathetic. ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM, not rip them. If you bleed green, show it by supporting the guys. Lots of them are new, playing under new schemes run by new coaches. Don't expect immediate sucess.

    Everybody,

Stop fantasizing about Reid leaving. Lurie doesn't care about this team. He's from Boston. He cares about Academy Awards and a green stadium, all laudable things. But as long as you help him print money in the Linc's basement, Reid is going nowhere.

@ Dan Callahan What has Andrew Luck have to do with Andy being a terminated, except the first name. If Andy Reid were coaching Andy Luck do you think he would be better than Mike Vick? The Eagles problem is not Mike Vick, it was not Don Mcnabb. IT IS ANDREW WALTER REID...

@RUBICON24 Not Ike Reese, but Seth Joyner who during the off season asked Andy to coach the line backers, but was rejected by Andy Reid. And for bbeach, Mike Vick is not the problem on this team, It is the head coach. Don't let your hate cloud your thinking. You begin to think like Andy Reid.

Hate on this all you want but Reid's right. Castillo did have his players in position to be effective during the second half. The defense made all the stops they needed in the second half. Though it was a little too late. The Eagles remaining schedule is easy with the sole exception of New England. Don't quit Phillydelphians.

Unless Juan has changed his name to "wide 9", that's not the problem, can Castillo and promote Washburn. O-line can't block and the former o-line coach can't coach defense. Reid made both sides worse with just one move. Either can Castillo or them both.....Bill Cower is available.

This is going to be one hell of an offseason. Reid and his entire coaching staff will be let go and a new regime will enter. I don't know how much that will help, but it will sure be interesting to watch.

All these comments calling for a head coach in the NFL 2 get fired in order 2 salvage the season are ridiculous... Really? Firing a head coach in the middle of the season in ANY sport is asinine. Additionally, saying doing so in order to "salvage" a season is worse. The infamous "wide 9" D is ONLY effective if/when you have a VERY smart line-backing core that can dissect/attack the run and shed blocks quickly to cover gap assignments. Watching this MNF game is evidence of that in Detroit. Trust when I say that I am a Eagle fan and will rep the 215th 4 life who in the past has called 4 the firing of AR more times then I care 2 remember. However, just as every player on the eagles states (as well as every media outlet outside Delaware valley)it is not AR who turns the ball over. Minus the turnovers and bonehead penalty's, this is still in my opinion a great football team. Now their lack of discipline... ALL on the coaching staff

Most of the big checks that Lurie wrote were for players on defense. We have gotten significantly worse on defense this year. Do we blame the players or the coaches? I blame the defensive coach and Andy Reid for not utilizing these players correctly. Why were they prized free agents and now they are ineffective on our team? Not too hard to figure out. The coaching and schemes are not working because they are flawed, not the players. One more point, why can't we draft some linebackers to anchor our defense? Is it that complicated? Teams run all over us because we ignore the position in the draft year after year. Why can't someone on the coaching staff figure that out? I won't even mention the offensive line picks. The answer seems obvious to me. put in some people who can evaluate talent and manage the team during a game. Ownership has shown it it willing to spend to win, lets get a coach and staff that can deliver.

Reid is arrogant and in denial as usual. What's his explanation for only letting Shady McCoy run the ball 11 times for a 7.3 avg. in a fairly close game most of the way?

Reid would absolutely ruin Andrew Luck until he became a mere shell of himself unable to function, used and abused and evidently traded. I haven't the faintest idea whey all the talking heads think Reid is some kind of quarter back developing genius. Where did this come from? Every quarterback that has played for Reid develops bad habits, bad footwork and is suddenly inaccurate.

Don't get crazy you guys. We can beat the Skins. If we can shut down Santana Moss and if we can score three touch downs and a filed goal or two it should work out OK. I have to assume there is desperation in the locker room and Reid's office. P.S. Leron Landri is a big time punk.
