Michael Vick speaks with the media on the day after the Eagles season ended. (Sarah J. Glover/Staff Photographer)

The Eagles packed up their belongings today and said goodbye to their 2011 season, which actually left town without them a while back, as they stumbled to 1-4 and 4-8.

"I'm a fan of the game. I'm going to watch the playoffs," said quarterback Michael Vick, who will be 32 when he takes his next snap. "I'm a fan of all the quarterbacks in this league, I like to see them excel, as well. It's going to be tough ... but I'll continue to tune in."

Vick acknowledged that he watched the Giants' victory over the Cowboys Sunday night, hours over finishing up his own season with a 34-10 victory over the Redskins. The Giants are 9-7 and are going to the playoffs as the NFC East representative, even though they had a negative-6 point differential. The 8-8 Eagles, 5-1 in the division, were plus-68, which ought to be impossible without posting a winning record, but was not, as it turned out.

"I'm proud of Eli (Manning, the Giants' QB). He stepped up and played a great game. They really gelled, like us, at the end of the year," Vick said.

Well, no, Mike, there was a crucial difference. The Giants didn't play great at all down the stretch, but they started out 6-2, so they didn't need to.

The Eagles' start killed their season, several players reiterated yesterday -- whether because of all the changes in personnel and coaching that had to be assimilated, or just because they lacked sufficient urgency and focus early.

"It is what it is," Vick said. He said this season's failure "is going to motivate us to work harder .... It's very disappointing."

Vick had to leave two games with injuries, and the Eagles blew fourth-quarter leads to lose both of them. Then they went 1-2 when Vick had to sit with broken ribs. "I have to be available for 16 games for this team. I've got to hold myself accountable," Vick said. "I've got to get away from trying to do too much, and understanding that waking up Monday morning (not) sore doesn't mean that you didn't go out and give it your all. I think it means you played smart, and I went into the game yesterday with that mindset. I went into the game with that mindset. That's how I want to play this coming season -- protecting the ball, playing smart, not taking unnecessary hits, and being there for my team. That's what means more to me now than anything."

Defensive end Juqua Parker, the oldest Eagle at 33, heads into an uncertain future as an unrestricted free agent, one of 11. The rest of the list: Victor Abiamiri, Ronnie Brown, King Dunlap, DeSean Jackson, Derek Landri, Trevor Laws, Evan Mathis, Owen Scmitt, Steve Smith and Vince Young. Antonio Dixon is a restricted free agent.

Parker said he wants to return, doesn't know if that will be possible. He said the same goes for defensive line coach Jim Washburn -- he said Washburn has told him he would like to be back. Obviously, that would be complicated, if the Birds hire a new defensive coordinator, as many people expect.

The Rams fired head coach Steve Spagnuolo today, as expected. Spagnuolo, a former Eagles defensive assistant, has been widely linked to the Eagles' situation. Eagles coach Andy Reid is not scheduled to talk to reporters until after an address from team chairman Jeffrey Lurie later this week. The Eagles declined to make defensive coordinator Juan Castillo available to reporters yesterday or today.

Oh, and unofficially, the Eagles draft 15th in April.

Vick doesn't think his league leading turnovers were a problem. Can't wait till they can cut him after next year.

QB is #1 priority, no doubt about it. So the Eagles will probably draft a head cheerleader. Makes about as much sense as the previous draft choices.

What do you expect from the QB? There's no accountability required of the coach, who thinks his team played great in the last 4 games - against dogs. He's a reflection of the corporate culture there. By the way Mr. QB, nobody around here is "proud" of Manning. The only reason we liked what he did is that the Cowgirls and their scumbag of an owner got humiliated on national TV.

Too many excuses. They think they're the only team with no spring training, injuries, or change of assistant coaches. Vick is too stupid to read defenses and too stupid to learn to slide.

49ers with the same players and a new coaching staff got the second seed. Fire Juan.. Fire Roseman, hire Spags... Draft Linebacker, sign Desean

We should regret Vick and Maclin and Jackson and the line backers and the coaches and that we couldn't win a weak division. "Time's yours."

1st and goal, Roseman is not going anywhere; Desean will be resigned, linebackers will be drafted and Castillo will be reassigned and Spags will come back....and the beat goes on and on. johnnyu

I would like to see at least some disappointment from these guys, especially Vick. He talks about how there's nothing that he can do about the turn overs and that the season wasn't decided based on the interceptions he threw. He wasn't completely responsible but come on, you're the quarterback and the supposed leader of this team. This guy is a total bust and I can't wait until he's gone. What we've watched with Vick this year is what you get with him. Average statistically and doesn't take responsibility for anything. Unfortunately this team is stuck with him for at least one more year because the Eagles decided to pay him big bucks for 6 good games last year.

I've been saying since the low-points at mid season that Andy would be back. And frankly, after considering all things concerning our DC, I am thinking that HE should be back too. Find a GOOD linebacker (hopefully TWO), a GOOD safety and I think the "D" will be OK in '12. Top priority would be a VERY solid #2 QB for our Offense. And hang on (WITH BOTH HANDS!) to Howard Mudd! Good lord, if he retired again, I shudder to think what would happen to our O-Line! I spent the best part of two years screaming about our need for an improved line, and damned if we didn't FINALLY get it. Andy certainly screwed the pooch by putting Juan in as the DC. I know of NOBODY that heartily endorsed the idea....then. Add in the facts that: 1)The defensive players needed nametags in their meetings. 2)Those same players probably were as taken aback at the idea of a long time O-Line coach suddenly becoming the DC as the rest of the world. 3)The 3 CB "experiment" just flat-out did not work. 4)The lack of good linebackers and safeties KILLED the style of "D" used by the D-Line coach. 5)The lack of growth in Vick as a QB because of the lockout hurt us at exactly the wrong time...Early. We lost eight of the first twelve for as many different reasons as there are players, and were toast after the first five! A little stability is required right now, not answering to the torch and pitchfork gang by firing Castillo. Since Andy isn't getting fired now, maybe by keeping Juan, we get to the second round of the playoffs next year. But if we aren't at least a GOOD (11-5) team next year, Andy and Banner and everybody else shoud be looking for employment this time next year.

Don't worry everyone. Reid will draft a third rounder with his first pick because he so much smarter than everyone else. He'll take a linebacker with the 4th pick - a linebacker he could have taken with the eight pick. The fat man is so much smarter than everyone else.

    ej610,

Couldn't have said it better, but you have to be careful, like
with Don, even a hint that he lacks the ability to read defenses,
quickly on these threads, will draw out the dreaded "racist" replies
almost instantly? Vince Young might be the worst I ever saw at
it, and from his Wonderlic test result of like a 7 out of a
possible 50 score, you can see why? Don't laugh, McNabb was a 12.

We know they are bring Reid back, Lurie isn't eating 10 million
dollars and Reid isn't retiring??? So lets hope they bring Spags
back to run the D with the knowledge he has first dibs on the HC job
when Reid & Vick are one and done in 2012-2013.

That is about the only way i will not puke by seeing Reid still here
after 14 years of wining ABSOLUTELY nothing and hearing Lurie tells us
about his boyhood heroes the Celtics and Red Soxs, yet how many rings do they have, how many Jeffy have in what almost 20 years of ownership??

NO ONE in this organization should be smiling. Not b/c we didn't win a SB but we fell WAY short. Played uninspired at times and no matter how bad it got...there was never the acknowledgement from coach or player that we are a lousy team. They say that we are a team no one would want to face...come on now....does any true Eagle fan feel we could beat either New England, Packers, Saints, Steelers.....that's your TOP 4 organizations. Do you feel with this coming off season we can compete with them...I do not. Not with Reid having his usual 4-5 awful game plans a year and time mngmt. mistakes and definitely NOT with a QB that refuses to slide, throws picks, balls tipped and runs with the rock like a loaf of bread. He consistently will miss 3-4 games a year. This team needs a shake up to make a serious run...staying the course this year will only prolong the inevitable. Make the change now Jeff!!
