Redskins' Cooley: Eagles are 'team to beat'

Always outspoken Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley has borrowed a phrase from Jimmy Rollins and proclaimed the Eagles as "the team to beat" in the NFC East.

“I think Philly’s the team to beat, looking at what they’ve done right now," he said during an interview with 106.7 The Fan in Washington, according to sportsradiointerviews.com. "But when you look at the NFL and you look at the East, everyone can be very good. I wouldn’t be surprised, any way, to see New York and Dallas both being excellent football teams. It’s a tough division and it always will be, but when you look at what Philly did and when you look at the players they have and coming off the year they had last year, I think they’re a very good football team. Obviously we’re not the team to beat based on the way we played last year and what we’ve done over the past couple years.”

Of course, Cooley is not ruling out that any team could win the division.

"Yeah, I have no question," he said. "You could say any team would win it and I wouldn’t be surprised.”

Cooley has been hampered by a knee injury but said he hopes to play Sunday against the Giants in the opener.

not listening to anything this idiot says. last year, when the birds traded mcnabb to the redskins, he called it "the biggest boneheaded trade in NFL history" (meaning the eagles made a terrible trade). i'd like someone to ask him what he thinks of that trade now.

WQhen opponents praise other teams, especially enemies from their own division, it usually means they're trying to score points with the brass to eventually get acquired...His days are past, but I'm thinking Celek does need to pick it up a bit.I expect more Clay Harbor this year.

You expect more Harbor this year like I expect more Chad Hall.

Dick Vermeil pulled the same ploy when we played Dallas in the NFC championship game. It worked then but not now. Nice try Mr. Cooley.

All you posters sound like a bunch of overthinking, PMSing women. The guy recognized talent and he is right to see the Eagles are the team to beat given the whopping they got on MNF from the Eagles a year ago. Wouldn't YOU say, the packers are the team to beat? Obviously yes. And he was RIGHT a year ago that the Eagles might have made a mistake year ago when they traded McNabb. The guy was a pro-bowler and still put some serious points on the board. Kolb went down, and if it wasn't for Vick salvaging the season and exploding in the 4th Quarter against the giants, we might very well missed the playoffs.

hey everybody! there's a new idiot on the baord! or more than likely, a recycled idiot with a new name. let's review your last statement when you say cooley was RIGHT when he said it was the "biggest boneheaded trade in NFL history". in brief, they traded us the 37th pick in the draft for a QB who got benched for rex grossman (REX GROSSMAN) w/ 2 minutes left in a game because the coach with 2 super bowls thought rex grossman (REX GROSSMAN) had a "better grasp of the offense" and gave them a better chance to win the game. rex grossman threw a pick on the 1st play. then they went back to grossman again 2 games later because mcnabb sucks. the skins were eliminated from playoff contention around week 10 and now mcnabb isn't even on the team. meanwhile the eagles had not 1, but 2 QB's on their roster who were better than mcnabb, so we lost nothing and the team made the playoffs and were better off without him. and for your info, mcnabb was NOWHERE near a pro bowl QB last year. that's ancient history you dope. and can you add some more "if's and but's" in there? IF vick didn't salvage the season and IF we didn't come back against the giants, then cooley would be right. but that didn't happen now did it? do us a favor, stick with the Canadian Football League and leave real American football to the big boys.

oh and as for your statement that mcnabb could "still put some serious points on the board", the skins finished 25th in the league in scoring last year and they averaged more points the last 3 games when REX GROSSMAN started than they did with mcnabb. by the way, rex grosman barely beat out john beck to be their starter this year. yeah, cooley was right though, we made a stupid trade. if we only had mcnabb back!!

Cooley's knee hurts from it getting hit by Donovan McNabb passes last year.

I got a lot of respect for Joe as a player....but as a prognosticator he sucks as bad as anyone. (See his comments re Mc5 coming to town last year!) Having said that however, I have one HUGE doubt about our team, and it is spelled: O-Line. I have been berating and dissing Andy for two freaking years about that. Howie has a few of "his" type players in there now....and while I think he is totally fracked up, I wish nothing more than to be absolutely, fantastically WRONG. I don't wish to see harm come to V7 from blitzers up the middle, or just DT's blasting through those three huge question marks at LG, C, and RG. And while we certainly could use better Linebackers, they will not be the death of the defense. For if....IF(!)....the O-Line adjustments actually freaking WORK, and V7 can have time to see patterns develop and pick a target and throw while actually having his plant foot SET.....we WILL have that two score advantage our "D" needs to OPERATE! I gotta have some HOPE here....because my brain tells me Howie might be right for NEXT season, but this one is gonna be a disaster.

he was different because he didn't just say it was dumb, he called it the worst trade in NFL history. and it turned out to be a terrific trade - for the eagles.

I wouldn't call the Eagles the team to beat in the NFC East. Washington is underrated, but needs for once to put a whole season together. Dallas is under the radar, a new spot for them. The Giants look dysfunctional; they looked this way the first half of their Super Bowl year, too. Everyone will be aiming at the Eagles. We may be lucky to get a wild card berth. This is the NFL -- truth is, none of knows what will happen.
