Rams deny McNabb trade report

POSTED: Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 6:43 PM

With Andy Reid’s comments earlier today that his quarterbacks are on the marketplace, reports are already beginning to surface about possible trades.

The general manager of the St. Louis Rams is strongly denying a report that the Rams and Eagles are in discussions about Donovan McNabb.

The report says an offer of McNabb in exchange for the Rams’ second-round pick (33rd overall) and restricted free agent safety Oshiomogho Atogwe is on the table.

“Absolutely false,” Billy Devaney told Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It’s utterly ridiculous. I haven’t talked to Philadelphia about any of their players.”

Another Rams source said of the Eagles, “They may have a trade offer, but not from us. Why would we trade for McNabb and then go watch Bradford throw on Monday?”

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, whom the Rams are considering with the No. 1 overall pick, has his pro day on Monday.

Atogwe is not eligible to be traded at the moment because he is not under contract. He was given the lowest possible tender and was not happy about it, but has not signed that tender.

The Eagles are not commenting.

I would say that is a firm "HELL NO" on any trade to the Rams regarding the 33 pick.

I liked McNabb, but it's time for change. Kolb in '10/'11.

We should not trade him at all, and you can't trade him for less than a first. (second from Rams is like a 1st)

I hate false rumors... Eagles should sign Atogwe anyways!

The advantage to the 33rd pick would be the guaranteed money involved with signing the pick...let's face it...The even if the Birds went into the draft with two 1st round picks, they would trade one anyway for a 2nd rounder. The 33rd pick is the highest 2nd rounder they can get.

Now I hear that this is a true rumor. It isn't that Rams are going to trade Atogwe, it is that they agree not to match his offer meaning Eagles would get him! Plus the 33rd overall pick. This would be great! Please happen!

Can't McNabb veto such a trade (if one were to happen)? Is he going to agree to go to the Rams or Bills or Browns?

Play McFlubb this year and let him walk for 2nd round compensation next year.

"Absolutely false" and "utterly ridiculous" make this sound like just a rumor. Why would the Rams so vehemently deny it rather than just giving a vaguer answer? Makes no sense. If it is just a rumor it could work against the Eagles. Now that this is out other teams may figure the Eagles can't bring McNabb back and they have the edge. His value could go down.

No Seed, it's "not yet completed." Probably because it's also "not yet started."

s: that's funny :-) I don't get why is this obsession over just the QB position, when you have more than a good enough QB to win; while rest of the team stinks.

Rams could draft Suh and have Mcnabb and draft a safety in 3rd round since there is depth at that position in the draft. Not a bad way to go for them.. dont forget Bradford could be injury prone with his shoulder. those kind of injuries could pop up again

Yes Seed, Dallas exposed them for what they are. All year I kept thinking it was smoke and mirrors against so-so teams. Those last two games really showed how many huge holes they have on both sides of the ball. I can see both sides of the QB argument. McNabb has been here too long without winning the big one and he's not getting any younger. On the other hand, I think the reality of Kolb is very questionable. Chances of him coming out of the gate a Super Bowl QB are almost nil. The question is do we just get some rocky/bad years as he matures or does he end up being a complete Hoying? It's a risk. If he has trade value now based on those two games it make sense to trade him instead. I like what I've seen but I'm far from sold. And with the current state of the O-line he could get hammered back there. The Birds need a lot of new parts.

Seed, I agree with you that upgrading the rest of the team is just as important as which one of our capable QBs we trade (and I mean 5 or KK, Vick is not a capable QB and should be traded for any pick you can get). Need an interior OL (preferably a C), a run stuffing DT for 1st and 2nd down (Bunk and Patty are good, seem like they will never get great), and young defensive playmakers added to the mix (S, CB, LBs) who may blossom into a star.

s, on offense, how many pieces do you think we need? 1 OL, preferably a C (see above) or maybe 2 OL. I agree we need more on defense, but I don't think we are as far away as you and seed make it seem. A top DT could alleviate the perceived need for a DE, as pass rushing improvement inside could make it necessary for the other team to double team inside and that would make the outside better through one v one blocking. A LB that can pass defend, especially against the TE, and a DB that can play centerfield while also occasionally making a physical tackle. That would be 4 positions that we would need to get out of the draft. What do you think NEEDS to be improved, not necessarily what you would LIKE to see improved?

Reddgie - one big problem they have is they stink in terms of depth. We saw what happened at LB and OL when a few guys were out. So I'd say at least 2 on the OL even if one is only for depth. They need depth at OT. They need a better center or at least one on par with Jackson who can fill in there and at OG. I agree with you on DT. I was saying that last year -- that DT may be as important as DE. Someone here said it: Patterson and Bunkley are solid but that's about it. I'm not sold on Tapp as DE until I see him more. To win I'd see Tapp as more of a rotation guy and I'd upgrade DE. More depth at LB is needed for sure. Once Bradley went down it was over. And I'm not sold on safety yet. Key for me is the lines. If they got two studs on each of the lines I'd be happy. Up front is where it starts and they dropped way off last year, particularly on the OL. I'm really not 100% sold on RB yet either. Is McCoy/Bell good enough? BWest spoiled us for years. But I expect with Weaver the three we have will do in the backfield.

Reddgie, was wondering where you were. Did the reaction to the rumor by some of the "fans" disgust you too? Hard to comprehend isn't it? I expect it from some of the mental midgets but I can't comprehend the lack of gratitude. That being said, I actually like the trade but we'll see if it's true.

Lonewolf says, "where there is fire, I'm smoking something"...seriously dude, get a new line. When McNabb lines up under center in Sept. to lead this team, you going to root for them or what?

Hey wiff, please copy/paste that post of mine please. I believe I said there was a possibility BOTH could be traded. Do you even know what credibility is. Wait, if you don't have it, how could you know. My bad.
