Raiders sources reportedly deny McNabb offer

POSTED: Tuesday, March 30, 2010, 8:08 AM

UPDATED: The Eagles announced that cornerback Ellis Hobbs and linebacker Chris Gocong have signed their tenders and received 1-year contracts. Both players had been restricted free agents.

Hobbs, acquired in a trade during last year's draft from New England, was tendered at the first-round level. Gocong, a third-round pick, was tendered at the third-round level.

That leaves punter Sav Rocca, offensive guard/center Nick Cole, guard Max Jean-Gilles and linebacker Omar Gaither as restricted free agents who have not signed their tenders. The deadline is April 15.

Raiders sources are denying an offer for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, the San Jose Mercury News reported today, despite reports from Yahoo Sports and ESPN that term the Raiders the front-runner for McNabb's services. In fact, despite a lot of internet speculation, nothing tangible has emerged from a week of McNabb trade rumors. It seems quite possible the McNabb situation will drift along at least until the week of the NFL draft, which starts April 22.

"Two Raiders employees remain steadfast that the Raiders haven't even spoken with the Eagles about McNabb, who is in the final year of his contract," the Merc reports.

Those same Raiders sources also said cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha "isn't available for trade." His name had been reported as part of a potential compensation package for McNabb.

Of course, the Raiders are somewhat of a dysfunctional organization so only time will tell. Teams have denied reports and then they turn out to be true.

Meanwhile, Oakland Tribune NFL writer Jerry McDonald weighed in on why McNabb is a bad idea for the Raiders. His conclusion: "With his age and contract status, McNabb is not the longterm answer to the Raiders problems. He’s a very expensive band-aid."

Here is one more view from the Bay Area: San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ray Ratto also weighs in on why acquiring McNabb is only a temporary fix

McNabb and four other Eagles did not report yesterday for the first day of the non-mandatory offseason conditioning program for veterans at the NovaCare Complex, ESPN reported.

Unless he is rehabbing an injury, McNabb traditionally does his offseason workouts in Arizona, with the team's blessing.

Sheldon Brown, Asante Samuel and Sav Rocca were among the others who didn't check in.

Brown has been unhappy with his contract. Last week at the owners meetings, coach Andy Reid said the Eagles have gotten "a few" inquiries about Brown. "The nice thing with Sheldon is he’s still under contract and been able to make a living," Reid added. "We’ll just take it from there. We’ll see what happens over time." A source close to Brown told the Daily News that he did not read much into Reid's comments.

Rocca usually spends his offseasons in his native Australia and returns to the U.S. a few weeks before the minicamp. He has not signed his tender so he is not under contract and not obligated to attend.

The other note about the offseason program is that the Eagles have hired a new strength and conditioning staff.

Who the heck is making up all these rumors? I am so tired of this, almost in all aspects in life. People looking for attention start false rumors. Get it done already if it is gonna happen. If not, let's move on.

this is very easy people... there is nothing going on, andy reid makes one comment that could have been aimed at any one of the 3 QBs and the philadelphia media (mainly jeff mcclane) start making things up about mcnabb... we have no clue what the eagles thoughts are!!! for all we know they could be talking to teams about kolb but we would never know becasue we are too wrapped up in shipping mcnabb off....at this point there is no reason to get rid of mcnabb, mainly because they will be giving him away, he doesnt want to sign with a bad team and the eagles want to get a first or second round for him.. they will get more for him next year when then can franchise him and let him pick a team sign with them and then we get that teams first or second pick. so i will post this before lonewolf gets on here... there is no smoke therfore there is no fire....my man

I don't think the Eagles will anything until the draft. Thats when they will start getting biites from teams that need a QB.

Over exposed I don't think eagles have an offer for McNabb yet . . . so there is nothing to ' pull the dam trigger ' on . . .

they might have made an offer...because if they did they wouldnt be like yea we made an offer and got rejected, they arent gonna admit it. Every team is denying they made offers, but yet the eagles have apparently receieved some offers...just like Andy was "happy" with the WR's and then traded for TO...no one is going to tell the public what they are going to trade before they do it, in case it doesnt work out. There are at least talks going on, if not offers being made and come draft day I think McNabb is gone, probably sooner.

They are waiting to get the best possible draft pick. They are negotiating. Otherwise, everyone on this site will then complain and moan that they GAVE McNabb away.

Good post bleed green forever. Too many poster's lives seem to revolve around getting rid of one or more of the QBs. Ultimately, I'm gonna root for whoever is under center and the whole team. I think McNabb is the best choice as of now. Ya gotta get to the playoffs before you can get to the SB. Oh, and lonewolf is cheese.

No one wants an inaccurate qb that displays his leadership playing the air guitar.

This whole thing is being carried on by the media and media only. Reid's trying to move him and he's working on it. Media speculation is making a mockery of the whole situation.

To jwatson, who wrote, "eagle management--DO IT--DO IT !!! Move BOZO before even the Raiders wake up and see what the majority of the fans want." But why would the Raiders or anyone else want you? (With deep apologies to the real Bozo the Clown)

McNabb is enough QB to lead a team to the Superbowl. The Offensive System needs to be something better than Andy Reid's WCO tribute to Jeff Lurie's fantasies. McNabb was supposed to be the Eagles version of Steve Young. McNabb never had Young's accuracy, so the grand plan never worked. Reid has been loathe to change his offense ot McNabb's real skills/abilities. Look behind the curtain: its JEFF LURIE'S FANTASY OFFENSE--pass-pass-pass-punt.
