We learned yesterday via Quintin Demps that Macho Harris seems to be the starter at free safety for Sunday's opener at Carolina.

That, though, is far from the only question on defense. Who will start at middle linebacker in place of injured Stewart Bradley? Who will start opposite Trent Cole at defensive end?

The media was not allowed to watch Monday's 10-10-10 practice, but a defensive player told the Daily News that Omar Gaither took the first-team reps in the middle.

Last Sunday, Gaither seemed to be elevated to the first team, but then he sprained an ankle in practice last Monday. He finished the practice, but was held out of the preseason finale against the Jets. At the time, Andy Reid said it was because he knew what Gaither could do. That opened the door for second-year player Joe Mays. But if Sean McDermott really wanted to start Omar Gaither again, he would have named Gaither to the spot right away. Instead, Gaither seems to have won the job by default.

At defensive end, Juqua Parker said he and Victor Abiamiri alternated across from Cole on Monday. Abiamiri, of course, needs to stay healthy. Chris Clemons is in that mix, as well. Jason Babin seems to be Cole's backup. (We're assuming Darren Howard will play inside, as he did for most snaps last year.) Small wonder there was no room for undersized 2008 third-round pick Bryan Smith, who was snatched up by the Rams and former Eagles assistant Steve Spagnuolo after the Birds cut him.

Boy, doesn't this sound familiar. Opening game, unsure of your punt returner.

If you had flashbacks to the Eagles' opener in Green Bay in 2007 and J.R. Reed, the problem this time belongs to the Carolina Panthers.

They thought the solution was Mark Jones, who returned punts and kicks for the Panthers last season but had signed with Tennessee and was then cut. Jones hurt his hamstring with the Titans and a physical Monday revealed an unhealed tear. He expects to be ready for Week 2.

That brings the Panthers back to Kenneth Moore and rookie Captain Munnerlyn, at the moment. Each fumbled in a preseason loss to Pittsburgh last week.

The Sporting News revealed its All-Breakout Team for 2009 and the Eagles are represented with three players on offense: wide receiver DeSean Jackson, fullback Leonard Weaver and center Jamaal Jackson.

Of Weaver, TSN says, " He was an underrated offseason pickup. His versatility stands out: He is capable of blocking, carrying the ball and receiving all at a high level."

On DeSean Jackson: "For the first time since Terrell Owens, Donovan McNabb has an elite receiver."

On Jamaal Jackson: "A late bloomer, he now anchors a good young line."

I firmly believe this is by far the most balanced offense we've ever fielded. Case and point, we needed a true fullback to open some holes for westy, and we got one. So logic only dictates that we have a solid running game. We needed a true complement to Djacks, and with the addition of Maclin, along with the keepers of past Curtis, and Avant, we have a legitimate wide reciever group that can only get better. As long as Andy runs a balanced offensive attack, we can score at least 28 points a game, if not more. The defense on the other hand scares me to death. Any thoughts?

Case IN point, not Case AND point.

Rookie starter at FS, that's not encouraging. I hope the kid is that good. The rest of our secondary is pretty good. But good enough to make up for the rookie mistakes that seem inevitable from the FS position? I guess we'll find out.

The secondary is good enough to cover for Macho's mistakes until the opposing OC's trot out multiple receiver spread formations to expose him one on one. And you can count on that happening if he shows that he's the weakest link out there. Hopefully he won't be.

The secondary can cover for macho as they have had a lot of practice trying to cover for demps' mistakes. demps should still be embarassed by his play against arizona.

He is the weakest link out there and it would only be smart to target him. After week 1 we will again be singing the praises (and loss of) of B. Dawk! I'm waiting for Denver to send us the Thank You card.

Everyone seems to be forgetting about the o-line. It all starts at the line. And Andrews and Herremanns are both question marks going into the season.

I think were all feeling good about our O but D is def not as good as last year. This could be the difference in a handful of wins esp when the D is on the field at end of game trying to stop a drive. Pass D over the middle is going to be an issue all season esp with the TEs in this division. Heres to hoping our Offense is dynamic enough to keep us ahead in games, then again, preseason showed us difficulty in red zone again. However, all teams have their weaknesses. Special teams hasnt looked great covering, isnt that a new st coach we have?

Please, don't compare Desean Jackson to Fitzgerald. That's preposterous.

You should really stop bringing up Brian Dawkins for 2 reasons. 1. The Eagles made him a respectable offer for a veteran of his accomplishments but he decided to run for the money in Denver. He had just as much team loyalty as any other football player in the league. 2. When we did have Dawkins, he didn't play as a true FS. Most of the time when he was in the game, he was up in the box with the LB's doing run support. When he did drop back in coverage he was getting burnt. Sure he could still hit a ton but that doesn't matter when the receiver already had him beat. Lets see what this current crop of safties have to offer come game time. Then we can make our judgements.

I applaud the fearless move on D to insert Macho for now and play the better player. Anyone remember leaving Blaine Bishop in the lineup when another young up and coming safety was better (see Michael Lewis). That was a mistake never acknowledge since ML took over the next year. You could argue that cost us the playoff game against the Bucs that year.

No..You can't compare Jackson to Fitzgerald, BUT, you can compare him to Steve Smith...

It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent.
