Jason Peters misses Eagles OTA

The practices are voluntary, and the Eagles' starting left tackle did not volunteer, apparently.

Jason Peters misses Eagles OTA

The Eagles resumed OTA workouts on a soggy NovaCare field Tuesday, with All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters not in attendance.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly said he knows where Peters is and isn't concerned about his absence from the workouts, which are labeled voluntary. "I expect him to be in shortly," Kelly said.

Kelly would not give a reason for Peters' absence. He said Peters missed last week's work as well. Peters was absent Monday a week ago, the last time reporters were allowed to watch practice before today, but an Eagles spokesman said then that Peters was among a group of players delayed in traveling back from the South because of bad weather. The spokesman said the next day that all the players who weren't in practice Monday were there Tuesday. Today, the spokesman said Peters indeed was not in attendance at all last week.

Peters missed the 2012 season with an Achilles' injury.

Safety Kenny Phillips, a free agent signee from the Giants, spoke last week of how the training and coaching staffs were taking it easy with him as he recovers from knee problems that probably kept the Giants from bringing him back. Phillips did not practice Tuesday. Kelly said he was in the training room, but Kelly said he had no additional information. Asked if Phillips had suffered a setback, Kelly said the trainers only tell him whether a player is available that day or not.

Through an Eagles spokesman, Phillips said he was held out of the workout as a precaution.

With Peters absent and both Evan Mathis and Jason Kelce working back from injuries, the first-team offensive line was Dennis Kelly at left tackle, next to Allen Barbre, Dallas Reynolds, Todd Herremans and Lane Johnson. Kelly was questioned extensively on why 2011 first-round guard Danny Watkins can't seem to get into the first grouping even when it contains several backups. He said not to read into any line groupings until training camp, when the pads go on.

Also, Curtis Marsh again practiced ahead of free-agent signee Cary Williams at corner. Kelly had said Williams missed the first OTAs for his honeymoon, but Williams said Tuesday that wasn't exactly right, that he had some dental work, his wedding, and some complications arising from the building of a new home in the Nashville area that kept him away from NovaCare for about a month. Wiilliams said he has a lot of ground to make up in the defense.

It was impossible to say that one quarterback got more reps or looked better than any of the others on a wet, sloppy day of practice that featured several poor throws and drops.
