Outplayed and Outhit

The Eagles are a 2-3 team with a steep hill to climb to become the team they seemed to be through the first three weeks of the season. The Redskins outhit and outthought them in coming into the Linc and winning, 23-17.

Outplayed and Outhit

POSTED: Sunday, October 5, 2008, 5:40 PM

After the early trick plays and the punt return touchdown, the Eagles had nothing for the Washington Redskins, who dominated both lines of scrimmage in a 23-17 upset at the Linc.

Andy Reid added one little thing to his usual postgame refusal to engage in any sort of meaningful discussion of what went wrong: In the midst of repeating his mantra about needing to put players in better positions to make plays, Reid added: "and when (the players) are in those positions, we have to make sure that plays get made."

After starting out 1 for 4 on third down conversions, the Redskins converted 11 of their final 15. They took apart what had been the league's top rushing defense, running for 203 yards (to the Eagles' 58). They ended up with 75 offensive snaps, to the Birds' 47, 22 first downs to the Eagles' 14.

The Eagles' offense lost its ryhthm on the first drive of the second quarter and never really got it back. The Birds didn't throw the ball downfield and didn't run much -- instead, they found ways to screw ups screens and other short-yardage passes. Their defense got good pressure early, then was blasted back on its heels by the Redskins' offensive line.

The season isn't over at 2-3, but most fans' patience with ongoing confusion and inconsistency might be.

They looked horrible today after the Jackson punt return. I don't think I'll ever understand why Reid doesn't send mcnabb on a sneak from the one this year, didn't that used to be pretty much automatic? The slow developing plays to the RB aren't going to work. And how many times a game do they have to run that fake end around? I've always had faith in the fat man, I know I'm probably in the minority there, but I am starting to believe we need a new approach, and possibly a new coach. My patience is certainly wearing thin.

W Brimley, you are right. Ten years same questions about a coach and players. I was not the one throwing darts at 5. But I have asked myself for the last 5yrs what is up with the coaching. Today should be the final straw. Detroit got rid of there "weakest" link in Mc Millin. Funny with that, he actually drafted wideouts!! It's time to call up Bill Cowher, replace Morningwig and put the "blitz guru" on notice. This team is going nowhere. And by the looks of it, the 1st round coming from the Panthers will be 3 in the round. Jeff Laurie, pull the plug!!!! GO PHILS!!!!!

PLAYERS HAVE TO MAKE THE PLAYS!!!!! All the coaching in the world won't teach Lewis and Brown how to hold on to a pass or a lineman how to hold a block or Akers how to make a dadburn field goal.....sorry, EVERYONE gets a piece of this loss.

Les, you forgot to add 'Outcoached'. Although, maybe its assumed at this point as it happens every week. I add 'OutGM-ed' at every Draft..but thats just me. FIRE REID

Hi, West Coast Offense? Ok, lets get subpar WRs in here then. Makes perfect sense. I feel terrible for McNabb having to put up with this his whole career (save for 1 year we got a WR). Reid won early cause of McNabb and good D. We won in spite of him, not b/c of him.

Almar169: true. But the coach has to call the plays.. he calls that fake WR reverse every other play!! Also, the short dump to Westbrook, every other play. Ridiculous.. its EASY to gameplan against the Eagles, too predictable.

When Reggie didn't get into the endzone I had visions of being walled off at the goal line, with a player going wide and losing yardage. Would it kill Andy to try a QB sneak? What is he afraid of? Why not a naked bootleg- he could always throw it away or throw to a tight end! McNabb actually took off on one play! I was shocked. He needs to run a few times early- even if it's a chicken slide or an out of bounds "Eli" style. Wouldn/'t that be unexpected! Might open things up. I guess he had too much success early throwing to LJ to continue doing that during the rest of th game. They really have the 3 and out perfected.

lets face it andy reid has never been a great coach , and mcnabb has never had great wr's (execpt one year). But football is football! There are alot of coaches that win with fair less talent and bad play calling. These players need to step up and play ball! Our DB's are just not bringing it every play. I think safetys have played very well. Lb's made no plays today , and how many game do we have to lost before reid understands that you need a run game to win in the nfl. What did we have like four 3 and outs in a row. Andy reid must be insane because he go's in each game with the same game play. That is just crazy! I mean if you want to throw that ball 40 times a game fine, then go out and get wr's. We need to produce 1st downs plan and simply. move the ball down the field. If you want mcnabb to fight a war get him an army. lj smith sucks, lewis sucks, brown ok not a number one ,avant role player, jackson rookie,. Each yr reid goes out and get ol in the draft, for what to pass block all day! We need to get physical up front. We have rb's that can run, just need to start using them. Why do we not have a screen package for booker? What was the point of getting him if we had no idea how we wanted to use him. I have been a eagle fan all my life, we have a good team on paper. we just need to get out there a start playing some ball. This season is not over!

i lived in philadelphia most of my life... i have been away since 2004.. first moving to san antonio and now living in maryland but nothing has changed in phila.. still lurie.. reid.. mcnabb.. how many losses and how many bad seasons does it take for an owner to realize reid and mcnabb dont work.. get rid of both of them and start fresh.. thats their only chance to do something.. this tandem just does not cut it at all.. how many times do you have to be hit on the head before you realize that it hurts!!!!!!!!

Greg Lewis couldnt catch me in a phone both and I would rather have Mr Rogers calling our offensive plays...for about 4 or 5 possessions in the 2nd half, our series were - dropped pass, run for no gain, incomplete pass, punt...hell, I could come up with that offensive plan...also, we gave up a field goal in the closing minutes of the 1st half on each game we lost combined with missed field goals and it has directly caused a loss on 2 of the 3 games and indircetly on yesterdays game...it is a tough road from here on out and even if the Eagles can manage 10-6 (I know that is being generous) I dont think it will be enough to make the playoffs.

The blame for this loss falls squarely on Andy Reid. It has for two weeks in a row, most of the last 4 yrs and in the Superbowl in '04. Reid is a subpar game day coach. He has one game plan and when a decent team makes adjustments he cant change on the fly. He is always behind in his playcalling. They are slow to get in and predictable. This is the NFL, everyone is fighting to stay in this league to cash big checks. If the dumb fans can see the Fake Reverse, and 3rd and short pass to 36 every series, you think an avg NFL coach cant? This isnt a McNabb or oline fault at least this game. Reid is not capable and his message is lost. Reid, Jim Johnson, horrible Rory Segrest, Akers, GoCong, the 4mil special teams player Clemons, Greg Lewis, Hank Baskett, Lorenzo Booker, and the Event Staff at the game can all GO! Time for change!

NY Giants 4 - 0 Cowboys 4 - 1 Redskins 4 - 1 Eagles 2 - 3 Hmmm.... trading away your number ones the last two years, because you felt the team was set and you could groom talent...way to think it through. This organization is too comfortable at the top. It is clear to me that Reid, Lurie, Banner all believed that getting to the Superbowl was as good as winning it. There are good coaches out there. Reid has had his time and he faired well, but couldnt close the deal, now its time to turn the page and close this chapter.

Ok, so SOME of you fans are calling for Andy Reids head. Fine. Well since you guys are such wonderful football experts, can you please tell me who you think is going to come in here and do a better job? I mean seriously, have you put any thought into the question of who would take his place? Ray Rhodes, Rich Kotite? Just asking, since you must know more than I do. Reid can't catch the ball, he can just call the play. The problem with McNabb and Reid being here for so long is that Philly fans are quick to forget before they got here. Front runner Eagles fans. Rollins was right I guess.

Laurie, Banner and Reid. The three stooges 2008 style. Losing to the skins at home is a discrace. Put a bow on a pig of a team. Tell me Jeff "Mr. multiple super bowls" When does the first one get here?

Any way we can keep the Phillies playing through December? Maybe tell Selig to hold a best-of-11 LCS and a best-of-13 Series? And play them all at the same time as Eagles games so we don't have to watch them?

It is time for Reid to go. He has lost sight of the forest through the trees. His message clearly doesn't resonate in the locker room. This team needs to be held accountable. Akers should be cut. He is second rate. We don't have time for him to find himself. There should be a kicking competition this week. Speaking of Cut Greg Lewis needs to be let go. Time to move on. He got his super bowl catch now move on. You are terrible. It is tough to comprehend how Reid or morningloser could call a trap run on third and a nose. Everyone knows traps take time to develop. 2 weeks in a row Reid’s ineptness costs the eagles. Jeff Lurie...WAKE UP.....I would rather have Kathleen Turner calling the plays from the director’s chair of VI Shaworski Sequel.....

But isn't that what coaches do almar169 ? Teach? Aren't the coaches suppose to TEACH the wide receivers how to hold on to a pass? Aren't the coaches supposed to TEACH the lineman how to hold a block. These are fundamentals and techniques that the assistant coaches are supposed to TEACH the players during training camp with ongoing corrections and "COACHING UP" durng games. And whom do you suppose selected and hired these coaches? Why the same guy that selected the players, who, with few exceptions, are not as skilled and talented as players on oppossing teams. Yeah, that guy. Fat Andy.

I've been a blind fan for several years, constantly defending players against the comments left by several of you. But I've had enough now. I've always liked Akers, but he's past his prime. McNabb is not as effective as when he would run occasionally. Dawkins has heart, but has lost at least a step. Our wide recievers can't hold onto the ball. Both lines lost their battles yesterday. No viable backup for Westbrook, who gets hurt all too frequently (not his fault, he just gets used so much). I've been hoodwinked into believing this is a high quality team, but it's just an 8-8 (or worse) team. Time for some upgrades. In the meantime, GO PHILLIES!!!
