On Boldin and Peters
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
Those 12 draft picks the Eagles have stockpiled are attracting much speculation.
ESPN's John Clayton has mentioned in a couple of venues that the Birds could be involved in trades for either Arizona wideout Anquan Boldin or Buffalo Pro Bowl left offensive tackle Jason Peters.
Obviously, it would probably be impossible to pull off both acquisitions. Just as obviously, neither Boldin nor Peters officially is available.
Scuttlebutt holds that the Cards are more likely to part with Boldin than the Bills are with Peters - the Cards are already paying Larry Fitzgerald.
Peters would leave a huge hole in Buffalo's rebuilding scheme, although he seems disgruntled and wants a new contract. The Bills already have released guard Derrick Dockery, who signed with Washington, and tight end Robert Royal, who signed with Cleveland.
Comment removed.- How long are the writers going to be throwing out the Boldin rumors? all they are doing is getting the fans hopes up to a point of a bigger let down. the Eagles will NEVER trade for Boldin-they are happy with their WR's-if history has taught us anything with this team is they don't put stock in superstar players.

Draft a Stud RB? We don't run the ball, or haven't you guys been paying attention for the last 10 years? dankil13
Peters is the type of player Thomas was for a tackle. He is an anchor who will not make mistakes for years to come. If they can get him, I would be interested still in Runyan as a reserve and on-field coach. Boldin is not much use if your QB can't trust who is protecting his back. dutchman
This is a "get-by" year, until this year's draft crop matures and takes over next year. So many rushers will get-by the OL, we'll need a QB who can run, and DM can't run anymore. Sign Michael Vick for one year. Prudent move. ItalianSausage

Every year we go thru this same scenario. Speculation on the big trade the big signing...on and on and on. 40 M under the cap, lots of money to get the great player - and nothing ever happens. Speculate & dream all you want. It's always the same - not willing to go that extra step to get the receiver or great player that would put them over the top! Temple Fan
dankil13: the three headed monster offense was under Reid, they will draft multiple RB's this year and next and start back to a run first offensive to usher in a new QB. The won't focus on the line for a run offense transition, you need big bodies who can move the line, not skilled pass protecters. If the is a solid QB in '10 or '11 draft available McNabb's days are numbered. The defense could use a couple upgrades and the safety position sured up, other than that we will start drafting offensive skill players. who123
I would love to get Jason Peters and then draft TE Pettigrew and a RB. McNabb needs protection. Boldin is complaing about lack of respect and $$ like TO...does Philly want that all over again in a year or two? skins
My guess is that Joe Banner will not allow Fatty to pull off either of these trades. After all, think of all that money and draft picks we will have...isnt that great!!!! yescadog

these guys know NOTHING. With all their 'sources' - TO was headed to SF or Oakland.. and out of nowhere -- Buffalo. Happens all the time. In fact, when they insinuate, the more I know, it ain't happening. Our brass only trades 1st rd picks in the division so they can move back to get backup QBs anyways. AllDawk_AllTheTime

Eagles don't think they need a WR dcflyer
Hey Guys: Don't ask for more problems than you can handle. I live in Bills Country, and Peters held out until he got a better contract. Didn't earn the money. Trent Edwards is still seeing little birds flying around. Don't expect Peters to keep the blind side sealed. BigLadd

Calabrese your an idiot, and ItalianSausage you're on E pills. I think it's funny how quick many of us Eagles fans forget. Westbrook a softee??? Yea we need another running back but Westbrook plays injured (not hurt) all the time and still has big game breaking plays even with an O-line that's not built for run blocking. Get your mind right. And signing Michael Vick is the prudent deal??? I'm not even going to comment on that ads254
Would someone start a petition to get Ron Jawarski to take over as GM for the Eagles? I he has player personnel experience (albeit in the Arena Football League), he gets paid by ESPN to watch a boat load of film on players, he knows the passion of the Philadelphia fans and I think he would actually give a dang about the team! If he were in the front office, I don't think we'd be thinking of moves like getting Boldin or Peters as impossible. daero215

Temple Fan: You are right, the Eagles NEVER go out and get people. They didn't get Asante Samuel last year, or Takeo Spikes the year before. They didnt aquire TO or Jevon Kearse in 2004. They didn't sign John Runyan away from the Titans back in the day. Look, I am very frustrated with the team's inability to close the deal and win a super bowl, but changing facts and acting like they never go out and bring in talent is not productive either. I do not agree with every move they make, but when they feel a player is worth the risk, they do go out and bring them in, just as much as most other teams in the league. If you want the Eagles to be like the Cowboys or Redskins, bringing in tons of big names every year, just look at their records the last 10 years... not exactly a winning formula. psuhoffman
If they can get Peters, MAKE THE MOVE! p-diddy

dankil13, Your dead wrong. Drafting a stud RB will give the Offense the balance it has been LACKING for 10 years. Beanie Wells is the real deal. Too much speed and power to ignore if your defending. It forces the opposing D to stay honest ( unless they want to get gashed ) and will open up the passing game that much more.Balance dude. Balance. MJPD345
ItalianSausage, are you serious? Sure Vick can run, TOO BAD HE CAN'T THROW. Not to mention the whole animal torture thing. sewell guy, get a clue. # 5 is at the worst a top 10 QB. Eagles Phan in LI
MJPD345, I like you thought about Wells. However I don't know if he will translate well at the next level. I could be wrong but I don't remember him doing well against anyone good. Does anyone have his stats in bowl games or fast active defenses like USC or the SEC? Is Wells a violent runner? How will he hold up over time? I am also reluctant to trust big 10 RBs. the last kinda good one I remember was maybe MB3. Eagles Phan in LI
temple fan, really? you actually go to temple football 'games' and enjoy them? just asking, don't mean any malice. JACK V- we get neither. The trade that's really going to happen is that the Eagles move to 11-15 in the first round to get the LT of the future. Boldin completes the annual "Star WR" rumor in Philadelphia, although Peters is a different type of rumor for Philadelphia - much better talk than "Sign Orlando Pace". My hope is that they do draft twice in the first round, and that both of those players have week 1 starting calibur that is fulfilled. dpcoz
- Boldin would make this offseason a success instantly. I think the Oline is okay after last years young guards getting some much needed experience. Wouldnt surprise me if Runyan is back after rehabbing, but its a longshot. Weaver needs to get signed. TE, RB, and depth on defense is what is needed in the draft. Saw one report of eagles working out maryland Hayward-Bey WR soon? Would you rather have Boldin or Julius Peppers? sidanand
- and yes, I do understand the Eagles standard "Rookie Red Shirt" Philosophy. DeSean broke it in 2008, I hope a few more do in 2009. dpcoz
Probowl??? he only goes when the number 1 choices are hurt or too busy to play...perennial backup Dierte you should know that since you talk to Mc Puke when you cut his lawn....getting him receiver is tough sine you have to find one who can jump backwards for the passes thrown behind him, jump 15 feet in the air for all the overthrows, slither on the ground for all of the dirtballs thrown, and have 30 foot arms to reach all of the other bad throws....Can we draft one of the xmen? I think elastic man is available..... SkipinWV
Yall are all fools if you think this roster is a superbowl team Mcnabb needs help now. Now is the time to take the NFL by storm we will win a superbowl if we Boldin. elisha.blake
Ah, Dierte, Dierte old son....calm down before you have a stroke pal. Even idiots are allowed to have opinions lad. I just laugh at their ignorance, throw a few "tsk-tsks" their way and move on. You keep this stuff up man, and your on your way to an ulcer.....and the idiots are NOT worth it. TBear
Eagles Phan in LI: Wells had about 140 yards against LSU in the BCS Championship in 2008. However, I'm not a big believer in Wells' ability in the NFL. HIs ability to stay healthy is also questionable. sammarsh
The Eagles are worth 1.16 billion dollars and we (the fans) have no common sense. Lurie runs this team like a business...man. Don't they still owe the city 2 or 3 million for the luxury seats in the old Vet. He's nothing but a miser who will continue to such the fans dry...as he marches the side lines with his black trench, gloves, and scarf cutting back on the coal to run the stadium. Reminds me of another old miser...but there's no happy ending in site this time. dracquack
Arizona will never let Bouldin go....get the tackle....(pay up bean counter Joe)...draft a tight end, saftey and running back..... nuggett
Comment removed.- So much angst in these comments - sprinkled with tension and topped off with a nice helping of hate - all related to a trade possibility that is based on nothing more rumor for the last year. I only chime in when the stupidity meter goes over the top (see Sewer Guy) - so why not focus on the article. And, more importantly, why not just wait until the weekend of 4/25-4/26 is complete? If you want to be an idiot, rent the movie Idiocracy.
Sewell guy is an idiot... 5 nfc championships without a TE (LJ blows). Trade a 1st 3rd and 5th for boldin or 1st for Peters, draft RB and steal Jared Cook in the 2nd round at TE if your so concern... Come on guys, 2008 was a total success. Lurie achieved the BILLION $$$ status. There is no need to spend that remaining 40 million and drop off the Forbes Billionaire list!! J.H.S.
lonewolf: Of course everyone would agree to trade McNabb for Cutler. Cutler is 26 years old coming off his first pro-bowl season and is considered by many to be the next john Elway. McNabb’s 7 years older with a lot more miles and probably only has a few more years being a top QB. It would be like trading Kevin Garnett for Dwight Howard. It isn’t that KG isn’t a great player its just that Dwight is younger who has more upside at this point in their careers. TreeHaus
I would love to see them trade picks to get Boldin. I was hoping they would do a package deal of picks and Lito to the Cards for him because Arizona needs the depth at CB but oh well. TreeHaus
MJPD345 and who123 - I am all for a balanced offense - its why I can't stand having Andy Reid as our coach. But let's face it - he will never change. Balance to him is 70/30 pass to run. The 3-headed monster was in Andy's first or second year. Whether or not he has a "stud" RB does not matter (I for one, consider B West a stud, and Buck was a very good compliment to B West). Didn't Andy seem unhappy when we won games by running the ball? Why's that? Because Reid's first inclination will be to pass, then he will pass some more. I wish it wasn't the case - but I have completely lost faith in waiting for Andy to change his ways. dankil13

sammarsh, big ups for actually contributing usefual information. You have done more that thses hacks who write for the daily rags. God forbid they do more than regurjitate whatever real journalists on other web pages say. I think we are on the same page w. Wells. it seems like he gets his by bullying tacklers. this won't happen in the NFL, or if it does, it won't happen for long. You can't keep slamming into 250 + pounders and expect to last 16 games, let alone long enough to justify being drafted in the 1st round. If I had to choose between a stud LT or a stud WR, u ALWAYS go with the LT. That way u help the run and pass game. He can't be any worse at run blocking that the Eagles were. I think we can get by with getting a RB in the later rounds. Unless Pettigrew had a good pro day, he shoudl be available when the eagles pick. IN theory, the Eagles shoudl be able to get both. Peters may hold out AGAIN this year in Buffalo. He held out last year. Did they re-up his contract? Eagles Phan in LI
SkipinWV, here is a useful exercise. Please name the QBs in the league you woudl rather have the #5. Although your knowledge of fictonal comic book characters is impressive, I doubt the same holds true for football. Eagles Phan in LI

dankil13: We were a run team from '99-03, the three headed monster was the '02-03 seasons. Westbrook wasn't even drafted till 2002. It was when we lost Duce Staley and picked up TO the pass every down stuff started. Reid will go back to the run as he gets ready to hand the team over to a new QB so the pressure isn't squarely on the QB. In two or three years we will draft our next franchsie QB depending on who is available, before for that we will draft running backs to carry the load while the QB develops who123
How can you say the Eagles will NEVER trade for Boldin...The cards wanted too much the last time his name came up. If we aren't making a play for someone...(most likely him) then what the heck are we stockpiling picks for? I can assure you, no matter how much you bash the front offce (and I am a Joe Banner hater!) you can't say they are going to use 12 picks wlightning02
To fman727, we had Chad Lewis, who was a pro bowl caliber TE during part of that run He even broke his leg in one of those playoff games 5 or 6 years ago. msf29
Also I dont see the Birds taking Beenie Wells unless he slips to later rounds. He doesnt catch the ball well out of the backfield and wouldnt fit into Andy Reids system. They apparently are showing interest in the RB from Uconn Donald Brown I think his name is. TreeHaus

i dont believe the eagles are happy with their receivers despite them never going out and getting real talent. i think they cross their fingers hoping reggie brown blossoms into a number 1 receiver - which he hasnt. they finally cut greg lewis and lj smith. so i think it would be foolish NOT to believe the eagles are gonna do something to get donovan a receiver. jayfril
italian sausage you gotta stop playing madden dude and watch an NFL game it's not that easy phils116
What difference is a stud receiver if the QB throws the ball at his ankles or 10 feet behind him all game? Go for the lineman, at least then some holes might be opened up for Westy. madsav
sewell guy - A little advice bro, try Hooked On Phonics... Grims
Calabrese, can you at least be original. McNabb was dubbed McSoftee by someone you hate quite awhile ago JamesJ- according to missanelli on today's radio--the Cards are in trade talks with 2 teams-Eagles & Giants--Giants have offered 1 & 3 this yr. and a 1 next. Eagles have offered a 2 this yr. & 3 next. if this is true-just shows you how much the Eagles really want to win.
The eagles main priority should be to trade for Boldin or trade for Peters, giving up a #1 plus a 5th or a 2nd rounder for Peters. Then depending on what they do there, draft a RB and TE with the first two picks. A LT in the draft will not help next year and if you are keeping Mcnabb and Westy then than Rookie LT makes no sense. Swing Shawn Andrews or Herremans out to LT next season and see if that works. Its not like we don't have any flexibility on the lines since Reid drafted like 50 lineman in his 9 years as coach! Leshawn McCoy is the back i'd like to see with the 28th pick and Pettigrew would be a no-brainer at 21 for sure. Two young skilled guys to go along with D-Jax would surely invigorate this offense in spite of McNabb who is inconsistent to say the least. Unfortunately, Reid and "Nickles" Banner will trade up for a LT,(will sit entire year) draft the 3rd best TE in the 2nd,(like LJ) and draft the 10th best back in the 3rd round (like Moats. We will be competitive but come up short like we always do because we just do not have the studs to get us over the hump! tmax13

SkipinWV: McNabb and Eli went head to head last year and Eli choked. The Giants would have gone nowhere withtout that defense the year they won. Eli was a game manager who got lucky when David Tyree bailed him out after Assante let a sure pick go through his hands. Look at what happened to Eli when he dind't have Plaxico Burress to bail him out. Its also a heck of alot easier to pass when the other team has to stack the box to stop Brandon Jackobs. If you could have come up with more names, why didn't you? What did Warner do when he didn't have HOF caliber wrs? In St Louis, he had Holt and Bruce. In AZ he had Fitzy & Boldin. The word everyone is carefully avoiding is rebuilding. We have changed enough faces to qualify as a team in rebuilding mode. I have no idea what the outcome will be with so many incoming people that could wind up on the IR shortly after training camp begins. I only hope that Fat Andy adds some plays to the his Madden playbook. maybe Jimmy Johnson will allow the defense to close an important game instead of giving one up. If they don't, I will find something else to do on Sundays. I pretty much ignore the Sixers so it won't be a stretch to add the Eagles. bigcityballer- "If there is a solid QB in '10 or '11 draft available McNabb's days are numbered." This is another half hearted attempt (See Randy Moss rumors last year) by Eagles management to get a playmaker to complement Donovan. The Eagles don't want to pay the money for a top flight reciever. The last one we had was Mike Quick. If Donovan had the reciever like all of the so called greats (Manning Brothers, Bledsoe, Warner and so forth) He would be one of the top two QBs in the game. He proved that with TO in that one season. If the Eagles don't get one I hope Donovan moves on and win a chip!Because you Philly fanatics can't appreciate talent until it gone. History shows players do better after you so called fans run them out of town.. See Charles Barkley, Randal Cunnigham for references. Tejayanie
