Eagles eye moving up for safety in Round 1?
Daily News staff and Les Bowen
It is not a surprise that safety is among the Eagles' biggest needs in next week's draft.
The Eagles have 11 draft picks, which should give them plenty of ammunition to make a deal.
Either Berry, whom the Eagles have had in for a private workout, or Thomas would be a huge acquisition.
King suggests a possible trading partner could be the Dolphins, who have the 12th pick but do not have a second-rounder. Their next selection is No. 73. Moving to No. 12 could take Berry out of the mix, since he is expected to go in the Top 10, and perhaps the Top 5.
The Eagles likely would have to give up their first-rounder -- No. 24 -- and one of their other picks. The Eagles have two second-rounders, including the one received from Washington in the Donovan McNabb trade, and two third-rounders, although one of those is at No. 87, after the Dolphins' next selection.
The Birds haven't drafted in their scheduled first-round spot since 2006, when they chose defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley 14th overall. Staying put in the first is something they've done just twice in the past 7 years.

A week from today, we will be dissecting what the Eagles did in the first round of the NFL draft -- traded up, made the right move or not -- and what they might do with their picks over the final two days of the new three-day draft.
For today, we thought it made sense to look at the other teams in the NFC East -- which draft picks they have, who they have added and who they have gained -- especially with what we know about the Eagles' offseason to this point.
Look for more on where things stand with the Eagles in the coming days, as we begin our predraft coverage.

The legend of Mike Mamula, combine superhero, lives on.
During a conference call with reporters, Giants general manager Jerry Reese was asked this question: "In all of the years that you have been doing this, typically how dramatic can a guy either move up or fall based on a dramatic performance at the Combine - just at the Combine? You guys have game film on a guy all career long."
His response: "Sure, I think that happens sometimes. You see guys go to the Combine and just blow the Combine up with all of the gymnastic drills and athletic stuff. And you see people get burned by it. And you see some people go in there and do well at a Combine and play pretty good. So you see it both ways. I think years ago that the defensive end that Philadelphia took that really blew it up at the Combine played some but he was a quick riser. I said that to say that he was a quick riser, not to criticize their pick. He was a quick riser; I don’t think people had him ranked that high, but he really blew it up in the Combine and he jumped up high really quick. So you always see some of that happen."

Finally, thought this was really funny, from Igglesblog contributor BountyBowl, who had the cleverest Eagles-related site when he was out on his own:
http://www.igglesblog.com/iggles_blog/2010/04/comrades-there-is-no-rebuilding-only-reeducation.html
My favorite paragraph, as we all prepare for the May Day parade down Broad Street:
"If you see comrades in your apartment block who are considering defection, please direct them to our Central Party broadcasts. It is in all of our best interests that these confused comrades are appropriately reeducated by Associate Minister of Information and Vice Chairman of the People's Commissars, Comrade Spadaro. Comrade Spadaro is a longtime Party member and a trusted ally of the People. From the lips of Comrade Spadaro come the glorious Truths regarding the future of the Central Party. The success of the People depends on our collective loyalty -- rest assured that any impacted comrades will later thank you for the opportunity to be reeducated!"
If they really want a certain player, that could be a reason to move up, but generally speaking picks #20-50 are great places to be. DeSean Jackson and Brian Dawkins are two examples. Often better to have a bunch of picks in that zone than to have one pick at #12. tacklinjoe- The Eagles will NOT trade up higher than 15ish, and not to draft a safety. They don't value the position enough.
My earlier comment, like the remaining one, was obviously sarcastic. But thanks for getting it bumped, genius. ahab
That's what you call it? Sarcastic? Why don't you repost it so we can all decide how "sarcastic" it sounds. Unbelievable. fizzbin
here's the view of a diehard since 1954: I'm okay with reading bout the draft the day after it's over retzlaff
montgomeryhopkins my rant was not clueless but it obviously fell on someone with bad vision. Making the other teams better within your division is not foresight. Name another club that trades within the division now name one that traded within the division with all 3 teams? Anthony Spencer destroyed us last year, Ramses Barden is 6'6" 230 lbs and in the mold of Plaxico Burress (we all know how well we played against him) and McNabb has now made the Washington Redskins formidable. Giving each team within our division a solid playmaker and your comfortable with that because we have *gasp* Peters and Kolb? Get real. Peters might be the next Anthony Munoz but Spencer doesn't line up on Peters side does he? The Eagles brass are all about the dough and it was made painfully obvious when they traded within the division and refused to pick in the 1st round. Nothing but the truth- OMG this deal must get done. Trade for that 12th spot and make a another trade to move up at leats 3 spots. WHO'S WITH ME?

I wouldn't mind trading up a spot or two using lower round picks but with the number of holes on this team they need all the quality they can get. I thought previously they needed to be aggressive but with the trades and extra picks they can sit tight and role the dice. I say take Pouncey if he's there. That immediately repairs two OL positions with one pick. No sense changing QBs only to get him killed. After that all D with the best player available with one good QB prospect to push KK.. Andy loves the fat guys. He drafts a lot of them even though many don't pan out. Still think he goes that route. If Pouncey is gone, then DB is fine with me as long as we don't revert to picking a safety to play DT or some such nonsense. Enough with the experiments. And NO INJURED PLAYERS!!!! tpizza
As for NOT picking in the 1st round, the economic repercussions of picking a bust in the first round can be immense (see McDougle, Jerome). The contracts that 2nd rounders receive are less catastrophic if the player is a bust. Most teams would prefer picks in the 15-60 range, rather than the top 10 or 15. The Reddgie- I don't think Mamula was worth trading up to 7th to get, but lets not forget, he had 29 sacks his last 2 yrs at BC. Hardly a terrible pick based on his resume. Only haters can claim that. And he was never "Great" but he did notch 13.5 sacks in his 1st 2 years. Vernon Gholsten was picked 5th by the Jets and has zero after 2 yrs.
If they have to give up more then their 1st and their original 2nd, they would be better off staying pat or sending those two to Buffalo for Whitner. Thomas and Berry are the only two real 1st round Safeties, the rest are weak. Thomas concerns me because he barely 5 11. Stay put take harris or weatherspoon with the first. LGbalsac
Yeah, I'll repost it. Brilliant idea. Keep checking back. ahab
Trade Kolb, a first and third to the Rams and take Sam Bradford. KINGOFZED
We're waiting, ahab... fizzbin
