Oddsmakers liking Eagles in 2012

POSTED: Monday, February 6, 2012, 12:33 PM

Oddsmakers already have been taking future bets on who will win the Super Bowl next year, but with the season officially over, we wanted to look at the early odds.

Of course, these will change with free agency and the draft, but they provide a starting point.

And in checking a few sites today, the oddsmakers really like the Eagles.

The Birds's odds are hovering around the third choice among NFC teams and among the top five teams overall.

Vegas Insider has the Eagles at 12-1, as does Vegas-based Bovada.

Vegas Insider has the Packers at 5-1, the Saints at 6-1, the Patriots at 7-1, and the Steelers, the Eagles and the Ravens at 12-1.

Bovada has the Packers as the top choice at 6-1, followed by New England at 7-1, New Orleans at 8-1, and Houston, the Eagles and Pittsburgh all at 12-1.

Although the GIANTS have hoisted the Vince Lombardi trophy four times, they'll never match the number of Frank Perdue trophies that Philadelphia has secured at Wing Bowl....

If I worked in Vegas I would not give any Philadelphia team odds better than 50-1 to win a championship. Something about that "philadelphia" attached to a team implies failure to get over the hump. As if we don't all suffer enough with false hopes already, now we have to lose our money too?

I will book all bets at 12-1 on the Eagles. I'd also lay odds that EVERY other team that Vegas Insider has in the top 5 will win a SB before the Eagles win one. Book it!

The Eagles are the Gold standard with a great home field advantage. I'm sure NFL teams shake in there boots entering the Linc!!!!! 9 wins, gave up 400pts, dead last in rushing, and the Super Bowl champs.
    who does that?

I do not care about the odds nor do I care for them to be called the dream team/look how well that worked out.......One thing I do know that I will as I do every year root my heart out for them in the hopes that they do not break my heart in January(this year they broke it much sooner).

Fuggin kills me people throw out facts without research "lost to Dallas twice in two week period 47-6" try 48-14 in 2009. Takes little time to research like Mikey Miss saying in his diminishing returns article Sunday that 8 teams had more playoff wins than the Eagles, one being the Cowpokes....Mike do some homework before you stick you foot in your mouth...Their only win was in 2009 vs our beloved Eagles how can you not remember it was the Boys only playoff win since 1996.
Anyhoo f'k Vegas and Andy they both will fail to get it right with the Eagles...another tease in 2012 and hopefully Lurie won't buy into it this time...don't hold your breath.

We'll all be old, gray and in the grave before the Eagles ever win a Super Bowl at the rate they're going. Howzabout putting your hopes on the only professional football team in Philly to win a championship?? The SOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUL!!! GO SOUL 2008 Champs!

Wow, Eagles as 3rd choice, even with Reid at the helm? What do these guys smoke when they get together to make these choices? Arrogant Andy is not going to change his Worst Coast Offense (Pass 65%, Run35%)where he ignors the best Running Back in the League. Jabba the Reid will also make sure that this year's 1st round pick is the same "High Motor" Defensive End (6' 1" 260 lbs) Clone as Brandon "IR" Graham. The Insanity continues!

If you're looking forward to a championship football team next season your best bet is to pack up your things and move somewhere with a championship dna.

idiots want to go back to losses 8 years ago to validate getting rid of the coach with the most success this franchise has had ever!! yes the giants won but those same giants fans were thrashing ownership and the GM because they stood still while we won the free agency period(sounds familiar like the idiots on this site)would be hv been ok not making the playoffs the last 4 years ? having a negative point diff does this make the g-men a better team hell no they just got hot and lucky(unforced turnovers in san fran recovered fumbles vs the pats)at the right time......we usually field a good team now we just need some good Karma but with so many negative people dragging this team down who knows if that will ever happen

It just seems like we never have good karma in Philly. We have had only one championship since 1983. Not a good showing. It can't get any worse.

Being among the odds on favorites every year and not living to expectations further underscores why it's long been time to get a new coach. How many rings would Belichek or Coughlin have if they had the Eagles roster for the last ten years? More than zero I can guarantee that.

The Eagles have had a lot of electrifying moments (e.g., 4th and 26, Brian Westbrook punt returns, Miracle in Meadowlands 2, etc.) during the Andy Reid era, but they never can capitalize on it and go the distance. The Patriots took advantage of the "tuck rule" game 10 years ago and established a near-dynasty since.

The Giants or any team with wins on their schedule in 2011 over winning opponents were sure to beat the Patriots, the Patriots didn't have one win over any team with a winning record in 2011. Chances are that had Vick not gone out of the games he did those out comes would have been different and it's the Eagles winning the Division.

Commish: do they hold parades for going 8-1 against the Giants? The longer we keep supporting Captain Andy's unique way of doing things (offensive line coaches get to play defensive coordinators, linebackers have no value, etc.), the longer we'll watch the rest of the division win Super Bowls (12 and counting).

@UGHRULF. you call "commish" an idiot and you say that the eagles can only beat average teams, yet as stated by the commish the eagles are 8-1 against the giants over the last few seasons. how do you reconcile that? are the giants average? im as annoyed by the eagles as anyone, but you're stance is absurd and completely unreasonable. you bring up dallas for some reason i can't figure out, but the eagles smoked dallas in both games this season (only 1 meaningful).

We can expect the Eagles to have a losing record after 5 games next year. Andy never "puts his players in a position to win" until about game 10. But when they're 5-8, they really turn it on!

Oddsmakers keep forgetting that Reid makes all draft/personnel decisons. The Giants,Packers and Saints have proven records in putting together teams. The Eagles will never win the Superbowl with Reid.

The issue with Reid's coaching is not that his style is old or predictable. There have been teams that won the Super Bowl with a style designed to be simple and they were very predictable. It's about consistantly executing plays. We see the proof every game. There are plays that are defended perfectly but still succeed. Reid has had an issue with getting his teams to excute successfully for his entire tenure. Players say it takes two years in the offense until a player gets it down. Their defense was very complex until Juan simplified it last year. There's significant turn over every year these days. While it's fun for the coaches to have all these options, the players can't consistantly execute plays. Consistancy should be priority number one.

@Commish - ur a idoit!!! Andy can beat average teams, but he still loses to less talented or better prepared teams (ex. Tampa NFC champ game, Carolina NFC Champ game). To tell me that his season record ranking him as great is totally ridiculous. They lost to Dallas twice in two week period 47-6. Andy will not make the playoffs next year for one reason only. HIs coaching style is old and predictible. Good coaches (excluding AR) know how to play against his WC Offense.... I am looking toward Them getting the hopes up for everyone and then having it crash again. Ownership should dump the over matched GM and VP of Players operations.....

Shadow, that makes no sense. Reid's record against the Giants in that time has been 8-1, including a playoff win. What does the Giants beating other teams to advance have to do with Reid? Judge Reid on his performance, not on another team's.

I'm a Birds fan through and through, but how can the odds on them be so low, yet the Super Bowl winning Giants are not even top three in the conference?
We may hate the G-men, but you gotta respect that they get to the Super Bowl... alot more than Andy gets the Birds.
