Saturday morning observations:
--Lito Sheppard was the odd-man-out at cornerback in the Eagles' base package. Asante Samuel was the left cornerback and Sheldon Brown remained at right cornerback. When Sheppard was rotated in, Samuel stayed on the field and Sheppard replaced Brown at right cornerback. The Eagles didn't line up in their three-corner nickel package in the first practice. When they do, Brown likely will slide into the slot and Sheppard and Samuel will be on the outside.
--Quintin Mikell officially is the starting strong safety, replacing Sean Considine, who is coming off his second shoulder surgery in three years.
--Asante Samuel was wearing No. 22, which was Joselio Hanson's number last season. Hanson is wearing No. 21, which was Will James' number.
--Sheppard clearly is struggling with his current status as the No. 3 corner. When he would come off the field after taking his reps, he usually stood by himself on the opposite side of the field, away from the starters.
--Rookies DeSean Jackson and Quintin Demps both rotated fielding punts from Sav Rocca. Demps actually looked better than Jackson, who bobbled a few of Rocca's punts.
--Rocca still isn't as consistent as he needs to be. He boomed some 60-plus yarders, but also had a few with low-hangtime.
