No Jackson, no offense, and more from KC

POSTED: Friday, August 27, 2010, 11:17 PM

KANSAS CITY -- Observations from the Eagles' come-from-behind preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs tonight:

* DeSean Jackson injured his upper back on the Eagles' first offensive snap. On the next play, the Eagles scored on an 18-yard run by LeSean McCoy. After that, without Jackson, the Eagles’ offense went to hell. It gained just 60 yards on 29 plays the remainder of the first half and only a 149 yards on 49 offensive plays without Jackson in the first 3 quarters.

* The Chiefs’ 3-4 defense, which, by the way, is the very same scheme that the Green Bay Packers will be using against the Eagles in 2 weeks, except with much better players, seemed to completely befuddle the Bird’s blockers, despite the fact that they finally got starting left guard Todd Herremans back. Quarterback Kevin Kolb was sacked 4 times in 3 quarters of work and spent most of the night running for his life. He completed just 8 of his first 21 passes for 69 yards.

* The Eagles converted just 3 of 12 third-down chances in the first 3 quarters and while they rushed for 97 yards in those first 3 quarters, 34 of those yards came from Kolb (18 on 3 carries) and the team’s other quarterback, Mike Vick (16 on 3 carries), who converted both of the Eagles’ successful third-down tries in the first 3 quarters.

* The Eagles’ first offensive unit continued to struggle in the red zone, converting just 1 of 3 trips inside the 20 into a touchdown against the Chiefs. For the preseason, the No. 1 offense is 1-for-6 in the red zone.

*  Ex-Eagle practice-squadder Andy Studebaker sacked Kolb twice in the first half.

* Left tackle Jason Peters, who had a red-zone penalty last week that negated a Kolb-to-Jason Avant touchdown pass, had a false start penalty in the red zone on the Eagles’ third possession, turning a third-and-nine into a third-and-14. A Kolb incompletion later, the Eagles had to settle for David Akers’ 86th field goal of the preseason.

* It looks like the Eagles are going to use Mike Vick a lot in third-and-short situations this season. He entered the game in the first quarter on a third-and-2 and ran for a 6-yard gain out of the shotgun. Replaced Kolb on a third-and-2 late in the third quarter and ran for an 8-yard gain and another first down. Those were the Eagles’ only successful third-down conversions in the first 3 quarters (they were 2-for-12).

* The lick Asante Samuel put on 5-7, 165-pound Chiefs running back Dexter McCluster on a flair pass in the second quarter.

* Darryl Tapp got a lot of reps, replacing right end Trent Cole, who left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. X-rays on Cole's ankle were negative.

* Chad Hall didn’t help his chances of making the team when he misjudged a third-quarter punt and let it bounce an additional 15 yards.

sadly we won this game, my fear is that it does more damage than had we lost because we would have a point that our first team offense (and line) are still trying to find themselves, if the greenbay i saw yesterday shows up, well...

Somewhere McNabb is smiling. Or vomiting. Probably both.

McNabb is gone like a lot of you wanted but you can't seem to stop talking about him. You need to start focusing on this so called accurate QB that isn't as accurate with some pressure in his face. Kolb hasn't scored a TD yet this preseason and looks lost at times out there. This will be a long season and it will not be pretty.

The line stinks so far. Vick needs to stay out.

SonoHomo, 5's best years are behind him. Rex Grossman will be the starting QB for the 4skins.

Vick needs to stay out, why is that, he is the backup qb, has made a td, Kolb well we are still waiting. Kolb looked terrible, however all I see is a lot of excuses for him, last week when Vick looked bad, the media was showing highlights on Vick before the game was over. You people are so transparent it's ridiculous.

Get ready for a long season with Kolb.

Looked like Kolb was running for his life all night, and when he did manage to throw a pass, if it went to Jeremy Malin, it got dropped. Oy vey. Here's hoping injuries to D-Jax and Trent Cole aren't serious, though I have a very bad feeling on both...

So many missed blocks by Weaver, Celek, St Andrews. They have to stop pulling Andrews, every time they do that he wiffs or trips over somebody and the play is a complete bust.
