Birds Sharp Early

Asante Samuel leads the NFL with seven interceptions, but will not play tonight against the Texans. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

Update: Well, Andre Johnson, after going down the tunnel for an unknown reason, returned to thoroughly flummox Dimitri Patterson for a 42-yard reception that would have been a TD if the ball hadn't hung in the air. The Texans scored two plays later anyway. They got back to 17-10. Then Trevor Laws intercepted Matt Schaub, Trevard Lindley recovered Laws' fumble, and the Eagles added a David Akers field goal for a 20-10 Eagles lead at the half. They should have had a TD after starting at the Texans' 18, but Jason Avant and Brent Celek dropped touchdown passes. Vick is 15 for 22 for 180 yards, a touchdown, and a 108.1 passer rating.

DeSean Jackson has two catches for 51 yards, the first catch coming on the first snap.

Earlier: The Texans' 28th-ranked defense definitely is not the Bears or the Giants. The Eagles drove 88 yards in 11 plays on the opening drive, scoring on a 1-yard Michael Vick pass to LeSean McCoy. The Texans got three back after a short kickoff,, and a Dimitri Patterson facemask penalty, but the Eagles went right back to work. Eleven plays, 72 yards, McCoy up the middle for the final 4. It's 14-3 early in the second quarter. Vick is 9 for 11 for 113 yards.

The Eagles converted their first 4 third down situations.

Earlier: Looking like the job of fending off Houston star wideout Andre Johnson will fall to Joselio Hanson, Dimitri Patterson and Trevard Lindley. Asante Samuel will sit for the second game in a row with an MCL injury.

Also inactive for the Eagles are WR Riley Cooper, CB Brandon Hughes, DE Juqua Parker, OL Reggie Wells, TE Garrett Mills and OL Austin Howard. The third quarterback is Mike Kafka.

Stay tuned.
