Arizona GM: "No interest" in McNabb

POSTED: Thursday, March 25, 2010, 10:47 AM

UPDATED 2:

Arizona general manager Rod Graves told the Cardinals' Web site that they have "no interest" in acquiring Donovan McNabb, echoing a report in Arizona Republic (link below).

Of course, McNabb is often linked to the Cardinals because of his offseason home in Chandler, Ariz., his desire to play for a contender and Kurt Warner's retirement.

The Cardinals are expecting to open training camp with Matt Leinart as the starter, finally hoping to live up to the promise expected from him when he was drafted out of USC. The team signed Derek Anderson after he was released from the Browns as a backup, but he will be waiting in the wings if Leinart stumbles.

UPDATED: The chorus of denials from the St. Louis Rams brass continued today in Jupiter, Fla., where coach Steve Spagnuolo was taking in a Cardinals spring training game.

"There’s nothing to that.” Spagnuolo said, according to the Associated Press. “At this time of the year, there are going to be all kinds of things. But no, there’s nothing there.”

Spags, a former defensive assistant with the Eagles, said he does not put much stock in trade rumors.

Yesterday at the owners meetings, Spagnuolo talked extensively about the amount of research and background work the Rams have done on prospective No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford, the quarterback from Oklahoma.

Interesingly, he said he has picked the brains of several other head coaches on Bradford, including Reid, Minnesota's Brad Childress and Denver's Josh McDaniel.

"The guys I respect and that know quarterbacks," Spagnuolo said. "They don't have to tell me (anything), but most of the guys are great. They're pretty open about it."

EARLIER:

It's getting near lunchtime in the East; do you know where your Donovan is?

Not traded yet, that we know.

The St. Louis report from yesterday has gathered no steam. It could have been an attempt by the Birds to set the market, or it could have been a conflation of rumors. Reports about Buffalo and Oakland persist, but it's really hard to envision McNabb signing in either place, which would make obtaining him kind of pointless for two teams that aren't winning the Super Bowl next season and would have to be looking toward several years of McNabb. In fact, a source close to McNabb has confirmed DMac would not be excited about those destinations.

One report this morning revived the well-worn Arizona speculation, but Kent Somers, who covers the team very ably for the Arizona Republic, sees little chance of McNabb ending up in his offseason home, though we might want to phone Kent for updates on DMac's whereabouts, since he seems to see the QB more often this time of year than we do.

Buffalo hasn't made the playoffs in 10 years, playing in a tough division, and Oakland, well, everybody knows the deal with Oakland. The thing to watch out for there is, Al Davis might be crazy enough to trade for a 33-year-old QB who doesn't want to be there, figuring he'll sell him on all that tarnished Rai-duh tradition once he gets him in black and silver.

In the meantime, Derek over at Igglesblog has an interesting, comprehensive take on the McNabb situation, with several strong points.

That's all for now. Stay tuned.

I doubt AZ makes a move for 5....just don't see them giving up on Matt Leinert. Rams seem to make the most sense.....lets get it done! Most people don't hate Donny Mac, they just want him to leave town and start new w/ Kolb. I can say "Thank You" to Donny for many good years, but it's time to move on.

bleed green forever I agree with you that the journalist for this paper and site are below average. We should demand better from our local media. They have failed us time and time again. Now they are in the business of firing off salvos and endorsing racial epithets. This isn't about McNabb it's about the media being divisive while promoting chaos and negativity. These are their tools as they have zero credibility to have access to legit and positive material. They run negative articles because they lack the ability to provide honest, authentic, and diversified news.

sheeron been there done that as far as serving in the military in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I post a lot on military subjects on this site (which actually has more in-tuned and thoughtful writers not the overwhelming negativity you see from the sports journalist) Served off and on in Iraq & Afghanistan from 2003-2007. Then came back as a contractor from 2007-2009. I know what really goes on out there. I apologize for the offhand remark about the teaparty but my stance on this sports issue still stands.

Lonewolf....I'll take your number five jerseys. I need something to wipe with. I'll send the remains to that D-SMACK lover in King of Prussia who loves Donnie so much that he will wash and wear the jerseys when Donnie's back in town throwing pick 6's (and smiling about it of course).

Take Bradford, let McNabb play while you break him in. No extention

Me feeling is this Bradford talk means nothing. I think them getting Don would be perfect, as Bradford won't likely be ready to start until Donavan retires or becomes the back up himself. He could help Bradford's development in the meantime.

Kolb may be a step backwards, but we know what we are getting with McNabb he Chokes, I mean throws up in every big game and his accuracy is getting worse. His receivers had to slow down to catch his passes last year. He never lead the team on long drives and always depended on the big plays by his receivers. He will be missed but he is not the answer in Philly and will not win with Reid and the West Coast Offense.

Hope one of two things: 1)If he goes, we need a 33 to 45 pick in the draft, plus a starting defensive back. 2)If he stays, the first round priority will be the O-Line situation, with the "D" getting (hopefully) some help with the rest of the draft.

How do you spell Interception? K-O-L-B. You have to preface EVERY game we've seen this guy in with: "If you take away the interceptions...". But hey, let's start the losing sooner rather than latter, so all the fake Eagles fans who only started following SINCE McNabb started taking them to the play-offs will go away. 1 or 2 seasons of KOLB, they'll all be gone, probably rooting for whatever team is popular for front runners to root for, and we'll probably have a high draft pick to get a real QB and start over.
