Morning-After Thoughts on Foles, Angry Andy

BOSTON -- A few quick morning-after thoughts before my flight home boards:

*More than the throws Nick Foles made, Andy Reid seemed impressed by the way Foles took a big late hit midway through the third quarter, which was penalized, and remained unfazed.

“He was pretty cool and all that. You got to see him take a big hit, and he bounced up from that and didn’t really hesitate, and that was a big hit. Big one,” Reid said. “So he got up and got himself off the ground and and got back in and continued to play well.”

*Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who still didn’t seem to make a lot of plays, was asked about Reid’s much-analyzed upbraiding of the defensive line after the Pats’ first touchdown, and ensuing two-point conversion.

“He came over and reminded all of us to get it going,” Ryans said. “He shouldn’t have had to come and tell us. We should have been on top of our game, playing smarter and playing fast.”

*Ryans also said: “The penalties [16 accepted, for 131 yards] were the only glaring mistake we had, and all those things can be corrected. We just have to play smarter in certain situations.”

*Reid seemed to think the defensive mistakes and lethargy could have had to do with feeling let down not to see Tom Brady and the Pats’ top weapons. He said that was no excuse for not being focused. Ryans agreed.

*Clay Harbor was targeted six times, caught six passes, for only 30 yards, but two for touchdowns. Pretty efficient.

Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, ryan tannehill, jake locker,RG3,Christan Ponder,Blaine Gabbert, John Skelton, Andrew Luck. The next wave of collegiate QBs are pro ready just need more snaps. Yes Foles was playing against a 2nd team defense but he demostrated poise and while under pressure still was able to deliver the ball accurately. I would jus run the ball a little more with the 1st team defense and use more play action. I watched Eli and Ben Rothisberger play with bad o lines but those QBs still demonstrate pocket awareness in spite of no help on the online and either throw the ball away or have a screen ready where they think the pressure is coming from. Vick in 10 seasons has not developed that skill set. trade him for a 2nd round pick before he injuries himself and we loose trade value. Then limit the defensive penalties! Vick is not the answer. I'm not sure how much more tape do the Eagles need to see on Foles to make the change. I watched two great games against the Steelers and Patriots. Gruden said he executed 60 complex formations against the patriots with the few reps he received in practice

And it's not just preseason it's watching 10 seasons of more of the same mistakes from Vick. when Vick is playing at a high level no one will argue his effect on the game but this team needs a QB for the entire season and Vick refuses to alter his decision making. Every time I see him turn his body a complete 360 I know something bad is coming. You have to step up or jus throw it away. Turning your body 360 then trying to JUMP to make a play reminds me of how basketball guards should never jump and try passing the ball. Vick jus can't grasp how to extend drives consistently against good teams who bring pressure.

Foles is the real thing. He made all the plays a quarterback has to make, including the ones Vick can't make and made it look easy. The Eagles looked inept with Mike Vick. They were a different team with Foles at QB and looked as gfood as the Packers, Saints and the Patriots. He is playing better than Weeden and Tannahill and they are both starting for their teams, but clueless Reid does not understand. He is still seeing "The Great Mike Vick" You can say a lot of things about Vick. Great is not one of them.

I like this kid Foles and the inky experts called him a wasted 4th round pick look at the #2 now that is a waste.

Foles has been impressive. But I can only take it for what it is, two preseason games. We don't know how he will do with meaningful games on the line. Vick looked horrible in the 2010 preseason and played very well in the regular season.

I like Foles's smarts, toughness & arm. However, Philly fans need to chill out a little bit on anointing him as savior just yet. Vick HAS to be the answer this year, but certainly if he continues to progress, he certainly may be the man next year.

You're right man. I couldn't believe it when we got rid of Garcia and he won all those championships . . . or I mean started all those games . . . or . . . somebody help me out here I'm trying to back up "Barbouze"'s point but all these facts are getting in the way.

Let's see what Foles can do On Friday against the Browns. Like any other NFL player that ever played, he will have a bad day and how he responds is what I want to see.

I like Vick. He will get into a rhytm when he plays a whole game. He hopefully will learn the dumpoff pass or his Eagles career will not last past this eason.

Shouldn't that read: "IF" he plays a whole game?

I agree. Until Vick learns to throw a checkdown pass in the rythm of the offense he is going to be roadkill. He has been throwing dump off passes his entire career because of the weak design of a greg knapp offense. Now that he has weapons he doesnt want to settle for the shorter pass. But if he doesnt do it he is going to die. He better watch some more Steve Young film and see how he gets rid of the ball on those short passes to Ricky Watters.

That flak jacket underneath Foles' uniform is really not that stylish. Vick definitely looked cooler without it, on those two plays he was in for.

Bottom line- Yes, he was playing against mostly 2nd teamers, but that said, he made throws that I have NEVER seen an Eagles quarterback throw. Jeff Garcia was accuarate but didn't have the arm strength that Foles possesses. With the exception of the long ball he threw (intercepted) at the end of the first half, his throws were accurate and balls were placed only where the receivers could make the catch. Can he do this consistently is the question.

    @ Mike Boryala - I concur.
@ Mike Vick - wear a flack jacket.

I am not annointing Foles, BUT he did look very good last night. I was impressed with his pocket presence. i don't believe he looked better because he was up against 2nd/3rd stringers. His timing and accuracy looked great and he did not seem to be rushing his throws. On top of all that, you also got to recognize the fact he came in with the starters who he had not practiced with. Oh and he was a lot more mobile than I was led to believe. I personally think that Howie and Andy struck gold with this kid.

Foles will have to be tough as nails to play behind that Line. Kelce and Mathis talk a better game than they actually play and Watkins is bad enough to know to keep quiet. Herremans is the best of the lot with Peters out and Dunlop is just OK. Just pray to God that Bell doesn't have to play or the season is over. Other than that, things couldn't be better for Andy, fragile Vick and Company.

So far we have played two games and I don't have the foggiest idea what kind of team we have. We have some nice individual pieces but the defense still doesn't shutdown those third and long situations against a second level offense. Very disappointing!

Foles seems to run the offense better than Vick, He knows when to throw it away. The situation seems a lot calmer with Foles at the helm. I know it's too early to make any judgements but I think Reid and company should be pounding the payment for a solid QB to take over the backup role if we are serious about winning the division. fIt sure doesn't look like Vick is going to hold up well.

Foles is the heir apparent to the Michael Vick fiasco. Mr. Brittle bones himself. Dump the Puppy Assasin, and put Foles in. This dude has an arm like a gun. He's accurate, and he's in sinc with his receivers.
Go Foles, good bye Vick !

King Dunlap is 6'10"! DeSean Jackson is 5' 9" maybe. How is 6' Michael Vick going to see the field over the behemoths that play on NFL offensive lines? If you're scrambling, it doesn't matter. But if you're in the pocket, it matters a lot. Foles is 6'6", he sees the field from in the pocket. He gets rid of the ball quickly and when he buys time, his eyes are downfield at all times. Which tells you he has above average peripheral vision and hearing to "feel" the pressure and slide around in the pocket. The final piece is his poise, the plays that don't gain any yardage are more telling than his completions. The way he bounced back after that hellacious hit that he took and threw a dart on the next play. And on another occasion rolled out to his right to avoid pressure, got out of the tackle box and threw the ball out of bounds. That's something you see Brady, P Manning, Brees, Rivers, the top QBs in the NFL do all the time. They don't take unnecessary hits.
