Moon criticizes Eagles' handling of McNabb

POSTED: Thursday, April 1, 2010, 7:26 AM

Virtually everyone has an opinion about Donovan McNabb and the way his situation with the Eagles will unfold.

Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, who knows a little bit about being a veteran quarterback in his 30s traded to another team, told USA Today that the Eagles are not showing McNabb the respect he deserves for what he has done for the organization.

"It's mind-boggling they would put Donovan in this position," Moon said. "He's hearing about things second hand, which I don't think shows him a lot of respect.

"It really surprises me because the Philadelphia Eagles have already made very strategic and very smart personnel moves that has gotten them in position to win championships. This one really baffles me, especially because of how important that position is."

"I don't know why you would get rid of a quarterback who is in the prime of his career in Donovan and go with an unknown in a young quarterback like a Kevin Kolb or a Michael Vick," Moon continued.

"If they're going to make a deal with the Raiders, go ahead and make the deal. What are they waiting on? It seems the longer they wait, the worse deal they're going to get closer to the draft."

McNabb has dealt with plenty in his Eagles career, and the constant trade speculation might just be one more thing, Moon said.

"I don't know if he'd be able to go back and play for that organization after all he's endured," Moon said. "Then, again, I wouldn't be surprised if they keep him as a starter and he goes right back out there and doesn't miss a beat.

"It seems like every year Donovan is the topic of some type of conversation about something, whether it was the Michael Vick thing last year, T.O. (Terrell Owens) a couple of years before that; the NAACP coming after him during the season one year, all kinds of different things always swirling around him. Yet it doesn't seem to bother him. He goes right out there on the field and performs. That's what I love about the guy. He doesn't let all the controversy affect him."

*

As we pointed out in today's Daily News, Eli Manning called the McNabb trade talk "shocking."

"Donovan has been a tremendous player for the Eagles, a staple of their organization," Manning told Reuters. "He's a tremendous competitor and a tremendous person."

*

The Eagles were among 30 teams in Texas yesterday for quarterback Colt McCoy's Pro Day. Only the Rams and Lions did not attend, according to reports. McCoy told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he had a private workout scheduled with the Rams, who have the No. 1 overall pick. "I feel like I'm the best quarterback in this draft," McCoy told reporters afterward. "Put me on the field with anybody."

*

USC also had its Pro Day yesterday, which focused more attention on Taylor Mays. Mays, whose 40 time at the combine raised eyebrows, did not run the 40 yesterday, according to reports.

The LA Times looked at Mays' draft status after Pro Day. Most telling quote was from an unnamed scout:
"He's OK in space, but you don't want him in tons of space. His size almost hurts him. A little bit of a smaller man might move around a little better, even if he's not as good an athlete."

I like Moon, but no where have I read that the Eagles were actually marketing McNabb. They have received offeres for him is all I've heard, and not one of the offers claimed by the media have panned out to be true. So really, the beef is with all the speculation flying around because the Eagles have three QBs and they "should" try to trade one or two of them. "Trade Mcnabb now while they can still get something for him." All this has come from the media. I have yet to see anything from the Eagles saying they are trying to get rid of McNabb.

There's a reason it's called MEDIA hype. The media has predicted 10 of the last 0 McNabb trades.

    (1) "...I don't know if he'd be able to go back and play for that organization after all he's endured..." WHAT?! Are you serious Warren?! Awwww, poor Donovan. Must be tough cashing the checks. How about the stinking fans huh!? I don't know if WE are able to go back and show up at a stadium where Mc5 and the hot dog King Andy Reid keep f-ing things up. (2) "...It seems like every year Donovan is the topic of some type of conversation about something..." I agree in the sense Mc5 didn't start most of that stuff. At the same time, you can't argue Mc5 is just one of those people who for whatever reason are a magnet for controversy. He doesn't help the situation though, an in fact flames the fire, with the woe is me attitude.

The team didn't treat McNabb poorly. Moon has no clue what's going on. The Philly press manufactured a story and kept it going with polls and other garbage. Reid has been saying for 8 years that he will listen to trade offers for any player on the team. That's what he said this year. How is that news or indicating that they are trading McNabb. Reid put out that they were looking for 2 first round picks for McNabb. That's the same as saying that he's not available. It's like someone approaching me and saying they want to buy my $500k house and I reply "Sure. I'm asking $4 million." I have no plans on selling but if some dope wants to pay me $4 million, I'm selling. This has been a non story since day one. Watch how the story dies as the draft and preseason approach. Now they'll have actual news to report so the Philly press won't need to keep this manufactured story going.

Lonewolf, i've been reading these posts for years and seen too many examples of your ignorance and never felt the need to even address your inane skewed perceptions. But for you to say that Moon's election the HOF is "questionable" is just further confirmation that you know absolutely nothing about pro football. Warren Moon has thrown for more yards than ANYONE and that includes Mr. Brett (Sybil Favre.(49,325-NFL 21,228-CFL) in pro football. Yes, some of that came in the CFL but why?! Because of racist buttholes (might that also be you?) who didn't think a black qb could succeed in the NFL so 6 of his MOST productive years were spent in relative anonymity in Edmonton. I think Moon is absolutely right, it is disrespectful the way the Eagles FO has handled this. A guy who's been the face of your franchise for over a decade and has done nothing but represent your organization with class has to sit and waver in the wind like that. Whether you want to keep McNabb or not, do it and get it over with.

Denny P, I agree with most of what you're saying but I cannot agree with the "woe is me" comment. One thing McNabb does is roll with the punches. Other than request for help on offense, I don't recall him ever dropping the the pity card.

Respect is nice, but I think McNabb will be able to console himself with the 50 million dollars or so he's banked over the last 11 years.

"If they're going to make a deal with the Raiders, go ahead and make the deal. What are they waiting on? It seems the longer they wait, the worse deal they're going to get closer to the draft." This is the kind of comment that frustrates the life out of me. First, it may be in the Eagle's best interest to WAIT to make a move. Second, it take two to make a trade. Everyone makes this asinine assumption that if the Eagles have decided to make a move they should just do it already. But you can't make a move unless BOTH SIDES AGREE. Just assuming as a fact that Oakland wants McNabb and is willing to give up adequate compensation to acquire him is naive at best, delusional at worst.

The Eagles can't do much about the sports media speculating on possible trades. For all Moon knows, the Eagles are keeping McNabb updated every step of the way. Given the fact that many potential trade partners would require that he agree to an extension I would think you have to keep him up to date.

When Kold aka Bobby Hoying falls on his face your station will be tuned to fire andy reid but for all the wrong reasons. You will make one excuse after trying to defend #5's departure. In the end I hope I am wrong cause I am an eagles fan first then a mcnabb fan but you lone wolf self proclamed lord of the idiots need to stop hating and start paying attention.

lonewolf 10- You think Randall is a better QB the Moon? For all your McNabb bashing and his inability to win a big game, Cunningham was the definition of not being able to win in the playoffs (what, 1 1st round win while playing with one of the most dominant defenses of all time). You give McNabb the defense Randall had and they win multiple SBs.

I was reading an article a few weeks ago regarding the "Black QB Fraternity" that may be the answer to Moon's interest. In the same article....A noted black NFL athlete said that "Key white players in prominent positions such as QB are very necessary in order to maintain high fan interest levels and the resultant high pay scales for the majority of players which are black. If we drive all of the whites out of the game we will be cutting our own throats. We now are in a process that is leading to that end. We must have at least 2 black panelists on every pre game show, we must have at least 1 game time live commentator, we must have more black head coaches, more black assistant coaches, more black coordinators. More everything. We are letting greed kill a good thing."

If anyone thinks this is a media issue, I think that's naive. Reid started it at the owner's meetings and was attempting to use the media to reach Eagle's goals. Truth is the Eagles miscalculated the value of all thier QBs and thought folks would come knocking even without advertising. When that didn't happen they started scrambling around like the arrogant, clueless, fools that they are. This included trying to use the media, to which the rest of teams in the league has laughed at. Now they will get much less for McNabb than they could've brokered a month ago or go into the season with those 3 QBs again. Both the results of inept front office work. It's what happens when you let a guy who was nothing more than a QB Coach in his past life start running the entire business (Head Coach and GM, for practical puposes).

Love Moon, his run and shoot days were fun to watch. His comment "after all he's endured" about McNabb is a little odd though. McNabb gets to play football, make a lot of money and operate in an offense that loves to pass the ball. If some trade talk, getting booed a couple of times and getting benched once is the worst he has had to deal with, things are not too bad. Most people in life have to deal with real grown up hardships. Those are things that most people have to endure.

Warren- he's gone out there and performed. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. If the goal is to win championships and the horse you have in the race has spent the majority of his career FAILING at being able to do this, you have to think of the future. I think getting McNabb out of here would be merciful to the fans and to McNabb. Both parties need a fresh start.

Seems the eagles believe all the BS hype over McNabb. They thought like warren moon that McNabb is the greatest QB to ever play the game and now that they wanna trade him, they expected everyone to come bargin there doors down tryin to get him. I mean i hear this alot lately that theres this assumptin that people like myself who want to trade McNabb and go with Kolb are tryin to say that Kolb is a better QB. Well i for one am not sayin that and really havent heard anyone say that. For me it's a fact that after 11 years it's run it's course. I live in reality and i know that that organization isnt gettin rid of Reid. The eagles offense has just been going nowhere for the last 3-4 years. McNabb is one of the most inconsistant Qb's i've ever seen. How many games does it take him till almost half time to be able to get his rythem. The offense and the philosophy arent changing. They don't need Kolb to be the greatest in the game, hell Aj Feely was able to run it well and get to the post season, Jeff Garcia same deal, neither of them are better per say then McNabb. There Defense hasn't been great lately, but how much of an effect does it have on them when the offense does nothin but 3 straight incompletions the first 2 or 3 drives of the game. Trading McNabb is all about bringin new life to the offense. And it doesnt always translate to just sayin if he had a defense and a running game or yadda yadda. Hell look at Brett Farve, he was on minnesota with arguably the best defense in the leauge, the beast running back, ect. How'd that work out, ohh yeah they still came down to needing a big play from there QB and in the end he did what we are used to seein from McNabb, he chocked. McNabb has great numbers in his carrear, but he also throws 40 to 50 times a game so is that a shock. He doesnt throw alot of picks, but he also doesnt take any chances, and most passes are either bouncin off the ground or over everyones head.

Only in Philly do people not recognize class. Everyone who KNOWS football recognizes the type of Player McNabb is, except all McNabb haters. When he leaves the Eagles will not be as competitive. I hope Kolb is good, but something tells me he isn't going to be half the player McNabb has. In 5 years the Eagles are going to regret their decision.

You can't solely judge a QB by whether he has a SB ring or not. Dan Marino doesn't have one and Trent Dilfer does. Ok, so stop the "he doesn't have a ring talk" it's ludicrous. It takes more than one person to win a super bowl.

For all we know, the Eagles FO talked with Donovan and all is proceeding per some grand scheme to trade Vick or Kolb or another player. Just because Warren Moon thinks the Eagles haven't talked with McNabb doesn't make it so. At this point, I bet they're pretty savvy in terms of manipulating the media to send messages to other teams.

what planet do these guys live on? respect? prime of his career? all that he has endured? McNabb has "endured" making an exorbitant salary (is it 10 million a year or something like that?)for basically working out 7 months a year and playing a game for the other 5. Let's get real here....how about the poor guy who is making $35,000 a year and he is doing the job of 2 people due to cutbacks in the work place...oh, and his health insurance just went up $40 per pay period...and there are rumored layoffs at this job before the end of the fiscal year...but wait....McNabb should be treated with respect for all that he has to endure.....happy holidays

McNabb trade rumors and speculation has been going on for years. It doesn't really matter what the Eagles or McNabb say, it still continues. It's become the favorite pastime in Philly. If the Eagles or McNabb say anything to refute these rumors, then the media just claims it's probably only posturing. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. You want to blame someone for all of the chatter? Blame the media, not the Eagles. All of this speculation started minutes after the playoff loss. It was going strong long before the recent comments by Reid. Not a day has gone by when there wasn't some sort of McNabb story this off-season.

McNabb has never complained during his tenure. He is constantly put in a position where he is darned if he does say something and darned if he doesn't. I don't know of another top tier QB that has put up with the things that McNabb has. There are numerous times he could have said just the slightest thing out of line and it would have caused a major blow up. He doesn't owe Philly Jack!

Nobody seems to understand that Andy & Co. do NOT let the media (or the fans) tell them what to do, how to do it, where to do it at, or WHEN to do anything. When they have an offer worthy of pulling the trigger on...they will do it IF IT SUITS THEM! All we can do is watch and wonder. I wish them all the best when it comes to putting a team together for next year. But I think they NEED at least two more starter-types than they have availailable to them in the draft at present. That is why I hope those two are gotten in a deal for Mc5.

I've been thinking about our McNabb situation. The Eagles have been on his shoulders for about a decade, we do owe him respect for that era of success. Donovan did have a Superbowl ring in his grasp, had he been flawless on that last drive against the Pats. But he wasn't, he couldn't do what Brady does so well, finish the big game to perfection. But the Eagles organization is gambling on Kolb here, and insulating themselves. Andy Reid recently got a contract extension, and today Joe Banner did as well. No one ever seems to post about Banner, but I think he's behind this. And if this gamble fails, they will be called out in name. I think offers should have made privately to teams, so that if nothing of interest in trades was found, McNabb could stay and finish out his contract here. That's apparently not an option now, they've mishandled this completely. Dawkins has to be laughing by now.

Hard to believe someone would want to be mistaken for you but hey, crazier things have happened. Oh well, as someone said [about a thousand times] where there's smoke there's fire.

Oh, and wiff, bashing Neuman does not correlate to him being a class act. Case in point, we bash you all the time. Just sayin'...my man!

moon did not come straight to the nfl because white bigoted owners refused to draft him and he went to canada for 5-6yrs that is why his numbers are not as profound as they should be(even though they are very good.)

Frank_Drebin, I am not a commie or socialist, but I feel that your post is noteworthy. It sure got someone's undergarment bunched up.

People saying Mc Nabb has represented the Eagles with class must have missed the I wanna be a white QB, Black on Black crime, I didn't know a game could end in a tie, answering the giants phone on sidelines, Playing the air guitar and outright failure in big games. ' Looks like all the brothers are rising to his defense, ignoring the facts. Sorta like them voting for Democrats all the time. The facts don't add up to their loyality.

More black-on-black love.... the racist angle around everything McNabb sickens me. It is so transparent.

A great QB is measured by how many League Championships he's won....Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach. McNabb is definitely not in this league of QB's.....good yes....great.....no way. Let's see 11 years in the league, and no Super Bowl Championships. Plenty of chances, but it's CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR. The time for McNabb to move on is now. He's not getting any younger. If the Eagles can release Brian Dawkins, a real GAMER, then the trade of McNabb will be no surprise.

When are the Eagles gonna learn, as well as the rest of the NFL, Black QB's just don't have what it takes to win a Super Bowl. The only reason that Doug Williams won, he was thrown into the mix after Mark Rypien got injured for the Redskins, and luckily enough for Williams he had a great team around him. When you can hand off the ball the John Riggins and let him do the dirty work for you, you should win. Anyway, I can't see any black QB's winning Super Bowl for quite a while, if ever.

Eli and the rest of the Giants don't want to see McNabb leave the Eagles because if he stays the Giants will have two victories in the bank.

Wow. Listening to a philandering jerk who publicly declared that OJ was a good guy is kind of dumb isn't it. Or is it just more piling on by the media. The answer - both.

ukidding, we know why fans like you are concerned about trading McNabb and playing Kolb, it only goes skin deep. I say dump Kolb, maybe package him with some of those soon to be wasted picks and go after Colt McCoy. Anyway to answer Moon question of why this Org. would do #5 like they are, its because like TO said their classless.
