McNabb treatment 'beyond disrespectful,' agent says
As the accolades continue to come in for Michael Vick, something very different is happening to his predecessor as the Eagles quarterback.
Donovan McNabb will be benched for the second time this season when the Washington Redskins face the Dallas Cowboys.
McNabb has gone from potential savior, to benched for the 2-minute drill against Detroit, to a mega-contract that turns out not what it appeared to be, to benched ... in favor of Rex Grossman.
And this was a guy who played in the Pro Bowl last season. What a downfall.
There is some question as to whether McNabb was told he would be benched before word started through the team Thursday night. During his weekly news conference Wednesday, McNabb said no one had told him anything about not starting.
Mike Shanhan said he told McNabb on Thursday that once the team was mathematically eliminated he had to look at the other guys. Grossman will start and John Beck will bbe the backup.
He also said he couldn't guarantee that McNabb would be back next season but that he would be honest with him moving forward.
Needless to say, Camp McNabb is not very happy.
"Disrespectful is probably not strong enough of a word," Fletcher N. Smith, McNabb's agent, told Jason Reid, of the Washington Post. "Donovan has handled himself with nothing but class, not just in Washington but as an ambassador for the league. To treat him this way ... it's beyond disrespectful."
"I almost don't even know where to begin, but it really started with Detroit and it was just wrong the way Donovan was treated. Just the way Mike [Shanahan] handled the whole situation in Detroit, and in almost every instance since that time, and this is, I guess, the culmination of that. I think it's ... again, it's beyond disrespectful."

Cry me a f----- river,McFraud is the most overrated QB in NFL history,,finally BIG RED was able to cut the cord on McFraud,a few years too late in this fan's eyes..GO BIRDS!!GO MV7!!...wolf. wolf 4
WOW...I just noticed MV7 is finally in the Eagletarian banner. When did they do that? It's about time...but then again, I may just be late noticing. zero9one7
Fletcher Smith doesn't get a very fundamental point. Your client has to play well! No coach is going to be interested in what an 'ambassador for the league' he is if he can't play. Shanahan has probably reached his breaking point, since he's inserting a QB that's even more mediocre than Donovan in his place. The handwriting is on the wall in Washington, he's gone after the season. Fletcher might want to tell his client that his career is going to be over quickly if he doesn't start playing decent football. drbob1- Shanahan is the fraud! Donvan has no help except the TE. Coach is trying to defend his nepotism! W/O Elway, we would not even be having this discussion, because Shanahan would be buried in obscurity. Dismal time, dumb owner, fraudulant coach, inept son of coach. They are the laughing stock the league. See how fast someone with sense grabs Donavan up before next season. shanahan will need the luck of the Irish to keep his job! Washington should schedule all D-3 colleges next year or hire Team Obliterator to play end!
OK...you heard it here first! Philly will sign Vick to a new contract that keeps him in green. Philly will trade Kolb in the off-season for a low first round pick, or high second round + later round pick. Washington will release McNabb, and he will be signed as Vick's backup. McNabb will be welcomed back by the fans as a terrific backup, and we can all sigh with relief if Vick needs relief. Plus we'll get the 4th round pick Washington owes us in the next draft for Donovan.
Everyone wins!

McNabb, at this stage of his career, needs weapons. He deserves more repsect than the Redskins have given him, and I think the fallout will be extremely harsh for Mike Shanahan's legacy (Kyle's poor behavior may relegate him to the scrap heap of head coaches in waiting). McNabb can still be a winning quarterback in this league, perhaps even take a team like San Francisco, Minnesota or Arizona deep into the playoffs, maybe even the Super Bowl, but he's not going to do it on his own like he did for the Eagles from 1999-2003. Now to the real question: what will the Redskins give us for Kevin Kolb? erictheagle
Trade Corn Kolb in THE OFFSEASON and BRING BACK DON!!! He knows the offense FairmountFrank
Kolb will be back next year. You can't trade a guy like Kolb away based on Vick's style of play. Vick is always one run away from getting knocked out. You really need a decent backup QB like Kolb in this situation.
As for McNabb, I do feel a little sorry for him - though Reid babied him too much here. McNabb's O line sucks and I don't care what QB you have, if they can't protect him, he'll be mediocre at best. Carcharios
Put Donovan on the Vikings next year and I'd imagine his numbers would improve dramatically. Ya know with a consistent running game and more than one target to throw to. And a special teams that doesn't botch 2 FGs, gets bailed out by Donovans last minute drive and then botches the extra point. MattKnife- @gophilly! - Thanks for the comic relief.
Wait? I thought Mc5's career in Washington was going to be "resurrected"? Also, it's not about having weapons, Mc5 is washed up. He was a very good QB in his day but those days are over. DennyP
Bring Donavan back? Are you people entirely insane? I was a McNabb supporter until it looked like his run had run its course (at the end of last year), but even I don't want to see him back here under any circumstances. His "poor me" act is tough when he is being babied, imagine how that is going to play as a back-up? No way. Zee77
I have to agree with Donovan's agent here to some extent. If the Redskins had a young QB in the wings, I might understand benching him. But Rex Grosmann? Are you kidding me? PYW
and Wilma thought Donny was dissed in philly? barrywil- I was a McNabb fan. I have to believe he is better than this, but I'm certain looking at him in a new light. Did Reid just know how to play to McNabb's strengths? I think Washington's bad O-Line more than a little to do with it.
