Donovan McNabb talked after Thursday’s preseason opener about the Eagles’ signing of Michael Vick, letting it be known he was behind the move and recalling that he hosted Vick when Vick visited Syracuse, before he signed with Virginia Tech.

Since then, with Vick joining the Birds on the practice field, McNabb has declined further comment, though he is scheduled for a news conference today. Tonight, McNabb posted some Vick thoughts on his blog at yardbarker.com.

McNabb again related the Syracuse story, saying he and Vick had remained in touch since then.

“Fast forward to today – I know what Michael was accused and convicted of and I don’t like it at all,” McNabb wrote. “I have had dogs all my life and consider myself a dog-lover. I am in no way excusing Michael for what happened but he was punished for his crime. He served his time and, at least I believe, has learned from it. I believe Michael is a changed person and that he deserves a chance at putting his life back together. A life, now, that will include being an activist to stop cruelty to animals.”

McNabb then blogged about the origins of the Eagles’ interest, shading the story slightly differently than management has. Eagles president Joe Banner has said head coach Andy Reid brought up the notion, after considering it quite a while.

“In mid-July before training camp started, I asked Coach Reid if we would be interested in having Michael join the Eagles and explained why I thought it would be good for both Michael and the team (Andy and I have an understanding that we will never discuss the details of our private exchanges),” McNabb wrote. “There was another time during camp where the subject was brought up again by me. It was not until Kevin Kolb was injured last Monday that I was given any indication that something might happen with Michael.”

That last part is interesting, because the Eagles have said signing Vick had nothing to do with Kolb’s knee injury, which apparently is not serious. Banner has acknowledged he contacted Vick’s agent, Joel Segal, last Monday, the day Kolb went down to an MCL sprain.

“I wanted Michael to come to Philadelphia and, in any way he can, help bring a Super Bowl championship to the city. There is no doubt he is a uniquely talented player that can add to our offensive weapons,” McNabb wrote. “For him personally, I want to see him continue to grow as a person, spend time with his family and reestablish himself as a leader on and off the field. Due to the nature of what happened and the attention it has received, it may not always be easy for him but he seems up for the challenge. Fortunately, with a tremendous individual like Tony Dungy in his corner, he will have the support he needs.

“I thank Andy for considering my suggestion. I also thank Mr. Lurie for taking the time to talk with Michael and making what he thought was a very difficult decision.

“Michael now admits he did a horrible thing – he’s not making excuses or asking for forgiveness. He only wants an opportunity to prove he’s a changed person and to help others.”

Thank you, Donovan. I'm happy and satisfied that you show the maturity to understand Michael that so many haters lack. Michael made a mistake and he paid a price for it. So many people in life don't realize how many people make mistakes in life and how second chances could lead to something positive. How many people have cheated on their husbands? wives? beat their kids and spouses? kill for sport? push drugs? you name it! There are a lot of people who don't pay for their mistakes. Michael has and it seems like he wants to be a better person from all of this. Everyone, let God judge him, not us.

Kalina, you and Mr. McNabb need to understand the Monster Vick did not serve time for animal cruelty. Animal cruelty IS NOT a federal offense. Illegal gambling, however, is. That is what the Monster served time for, in a federal prison. Mr. McNabb speaks of second chances, I wonder how much of a second chance he would give his wife if he found her being straddled by the pool boy. BTW, before you play the race card, know this, I think Timothy McVeigh should have been fried for what he did. I think Son of Sam should also fry for what he did. I also think that every Catholic priest who molested a child should be publicly humiliated by registering as sex offenders and castrated. As for cheating spouses, I can tell you with 100% surety that I would not give my husband a second chance if he cheated on me or hit me.

Kalina i'm agreeing with you all the way this was a business decision he paid his time, we forget that 3 football players ray lewis ravens, Leonard little Rams and Donte Stallworth browns killed human beings and they all got slap on the wrist their jail time was no more than 60 days and Vick does 2 yrs in jail wow america I'm more concern of human beings, i agree Vick is wrong and i hate what he did but the choice is made by the commissioner, Jeff Lurie, Andy Reid and Joe Banner he is a Eagle! Lets go Eagles oh yeah Cindy schiver you may not give 2nd chances other ppl will thats life some will some won't you entitled to your own opinion!

donovan is the man, hopefully the racists in philly don't try to use this against him and crucify him. Vick and Mcnabb is a dangerous combo, how many teams can say they have two PROBOWL qb's on their roster.

well.......philly eagle fans.........maybe hope is on the way.1st, i'm glad michael vick is going to get his like back in order,2nd, he's at least trying to get his career back on track.and 3rd...he's an eagle.i pray for this to work for him,and the eagles 2nd.he's going to be here and he's going to need strong support.if the team can support him, its going to be true eagle fans to give him the support, and not berate him for his past.theres more worse crimes commited by far worse people, who don't deserve it.let him play football, and get back his dignity.i wish him well, in this new chapter of life, and help to get the birds to the big show.

@ Richard - And that's exactly the problem. Too many people love their dogs (or whatever pets they may have) more than their fellow man, particularly their own children. Maybe if some of that love was directed at humans instead of animals there wouldn't be so many listless souls in society.

It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo started his career in Texas, working first for the Midland Reporter-Telegram (1976-78), and then for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams.
