McNabb and the Hall of Fame
After last night’s comeback victory over Chicago, coach Andy Reid lauded quarterback Donovan McNabb and called him a “Hall of Fame player.”
Reid was asked about that assertion during his day-after news conference on Monday.
“I think he’s done some incredible things in this league,” Reid said. “When it’s all said and done, he will be worthy of that.”
The Eagles also are approaching the one-year anniversary of Reid benching McNabb for the second half against Baltimore.
“I didn’t think any of us were doing our best job,” Reid said upon reflection a year later. “I think everybody needed to pick up our game. Unfortunately, it starts with the quarterback and works its way around. With that, everybody picked up their game -- not that I had any prophecy into that, but that’s what ended up happening. I knew we were leading the league in drops, and Donovan wasn’t catching the ball. We weren’t protecting very well and he wasn’t blocking. He wasn’t calling the plays and so on.”
On the injury front, cornerback Asante Samuel felt good after the game and this morning, Reid said. He was initially thought to have a neck stinger, but Reid described it as “more of a neck strain.”
Linebacker Akeem Jordan, who missed the last two games with a hyperextended knee, “is close,” Reid said. “He’s been able to run in the pool and done some stuff on the treadmill.” Reid indicated that Joe Mays and Jeremiah Trotter would again play at middle linebacker.
Safety Quintin Demps remains sidelined with a high ankle sprain.
Wide receiver Kevin Curtis and running back Brian Westbrook are out for Sunday’s game against Washington.
“Kevin is making progress,” Reid said. “He’s getting closer here to being able to run.”
Reid also talked about the play of Sheldon Brown (hamstring), Jason Peters (ankle) and Leonard Weaver, who all fought through injuries.
“My hat’s off to those three guys,” Reid said.
Stacy Andrews did not play and Reid indicated his first start last week against San Diego indicated some physical problems. He also said that he wanted to get Max Jean-Gilles back in the lineup.
“We knew with Stacy’s knee that first year back, especially as late as he had it, after knee surgery is a tough thing,” he said. “This isn’t a unique thing. This isn’t about Stacy’s will or knowledge. It’s the ability to plant that leg and be comfortable. He will be back in there. We’ll back off a little bit and then pick back up.”
- he shouldn't even be starting, let alone be mentioned in the same sentence as Hall of Fame. all i want for christmas is a quarterback who can throw the ball where he wants, when he wants, without nosediving passes into the ground 3 yards in front of him and then pointing to his chest and smiling. i don't think that's too much to ask
McNabb needs to string together several solid games where he's CONSISTENT and accurate. We all know that Donovan is very talented and can make great throws at times. It's the lack of consistency that's been his downfall and the team's downfall since 2005. soulman386
I don't even want to hear about HOF until #5 wins the big game! K_Ball
Andy is delusional, I guess he thinks he's a Hall of Fame coach too. Donovan will not be in the HOF unless he's there for a visit, or to give Brian Dawkins induction speech. Will T.
QB does not play in a void. Solid O-line and quality RB can enhance a QB performance significantly. McNabb with better playoff record (9-6) than Peyton and amazing career numbers with no pro receiver to help him (without TO for one year, and Jackson now) definitely will be in Hall of Fame. A SB ring make him a first ballot HOF QB. Seed- Hey stikolaboloni, you and about 27 other teams fans. As bad as it seems, it ain't that bad. MVKrum

They barely beat a bad Chicago team and the HOF talk starts. Amazing stuff. jbruder02
Actually Stikoboloni you are very wrong , yes there have been a few consistency issues , but on Stat alone Mc Nabb has hall of fame numbers and if he plays 3 or 4 more years at the same level he will rank much higher statistically then many HOF players, his Touchdown to Int ratio is 2nd highest all time, He may throw some in the dirt but not to defenders. Not only is he the best QB in Eagles franchise history and has been its face for over 10 years , so when its all said and done he will be in the hall of fame , with or without a bowl , if he gets a ring , it will just happen faster. As much of a Mcnabb supporter I have been since he was drafted, he won't be a Hall of Famer until he wins a Superbowl or plays until he throws for over 45,000 yards (at the very least). I think he gives you the chance to win every single game (despite the complaints of simpletons who do not understand the legacy of the last decade; Yes, he has shortcomings, but he also has provided more than enough to make up for them), and while most of his prime was wasted with litter (Pinkston, Mitchell, etc) he made the most of it. Looking at past great quarterbacks, such as Marino, Fouts (both of whom never won a championship, despite superior statistics) Elway (who had the same stigma as Mcnabb until winning LATE in the career), Montana, and Young, means there is a probability that Mcnabb will be effective (barring major injury, of course) until the age of 37 or 38 (when these qb's retired), which means about 4-5 more years to do so. With a solid nucleus this team has, it is very possible. thegloryofoldstate
As much as I love my Eagles sometimes other Eagles fans suck, how many teams have went to the playoff 7 of the past 10 seasons, Mc Nabb is a top tier Qb hands down , i think we saw last night Jay Cutler is not , and most of the Eagles fans who bash 5 alive will miss him when hes gone , I promise that Tigeroptics
Shouldn't be starting? He completed 72% of his passes and had a 101.6 rating one week after throwing for 450 yards. Idiots reign supreme on this site. MadAsHell
To all the phony Eagles fans out there. Justice would be Mcnabb getting traded to Washington next year, and him coming to the Linc and lighting up the Eagles, or perhaps a team like Dallas, careful what you wish for guys. Mcnabb has been putting up great numbers since becoming a starter, and with an awesome array of weapons like Pinkston, Thrash, and first down Freddie Mitchell.(insert sarcasm here please). The only frauds on this site are the idiot Mcnabb bashers. greekeagle- I think AR got into his kid's stash.
so marino isn't a hall of fame player because he never won a super bowl? the idiots on the post i tell ya. no one man can win a championship let alone a game. stik..mcnabb not a starter? he has the most playoff wins than any other current qb in the league..the least interception percentage in league history and 5 nfc championship game apperances and one super bowl apperance and 5 pro bowls. What recent qb has ever done that? so i guess Trent Dilfer is a better qb than Drew Brees because he has a ring....or worse Brad johnson is better than Dan Marino? People like yall jump on the bandwagon when number 5 has a big game in a big win. All qb's struggle and all qb's throw incompletions. some worse than others. would u rather have cutler (who throws 6 interceptions a game) or Mcnabb and have a better chance to win.. For some reason i think u dummies would chose cutler over mcnabb. Lets be glad u guys aren't in the front office. bigjay215
