McNabb: Sorry for No Supe

POSTED: Friday, May 14, 2010, 11:21 AM

Donovan McNabb, obviously still not that far in the rearview mirror for Eagles fans, spoke briefly today with Vai Sikahema and John Gonzalez on ESPN 97.5. Not a lot of new ground was broken, which didn't come as a surprise to anyone who followed McNabb's 11 years in Philadelphia. DMac's focus was touting his family's fight against high blood pressure; he did not want to deeply probe the wounds he suffered over the years, or the ones that might have been created by his departure.DMac is ready to turn the page.

"The things that I set out to accomplish and bring back to Philadelphia, I wasn't able to, and I apologize, more than anything, to the people of Philadelphia, not bringing a Super Bowl to 'em, but it didn't happen, and I look forward to trying to achieve that goal here in Washington," McNabb said, the most explicit regret he has expressed.

There was much attempted delving into how the Eagles went from proclaiming McNabb would be the quarterback in 2010, early this offseason, to trading him on Easter Sunday. McNabb didn't have any answers there. The shift seemed to come when the Eagles realized that Kevin Kolb was not going to sign an extension as a backup quarterback, and that they were going to have to decide whether to franchise Kolb after this season -- possibly without really knowing if he could be a fulltime starter -- or lose him to free agency. Bottom line, going into the final contract year with both McNabb and Kolb was an untenable situation for a front office that insists on having the upper hand in contract talks.

"I was hearing the same things everyone else was hearing" early in the offseason,McNabb said. "Things change. Sometimes you get an immediate answer, sometimes you don't."

McNabb added that "Andy (Reid) and I still have a great relationship." He also wished "good luck to the Eagles and everything they set out to do."

McNabb complimented Kolb several times and avoided being drawn into a discussion of Kolb's strengths and weaknesses vs. McNabb's. He was not asked about wideout DeSean Jackson's interview last week, in which Jackson said he thought the Eagles would be fine with Kolb; McNabb was quoted then as taking exception.

"I wish nothing but the best for (Kolb)," McNabb said. "I know he's excited about it, and good things can happen for him."

Asked about his legacy, the Eagles' all-time leading passer reiterated what he said at his introductory press conference in Washington, five weeks back. He said he hoped he would be remembered as "a guy who provided excitement, who gave them a chance to win every time he stepped out on the field, one that they had trust, knowing that I would do the right things, an most importantly, one that won ballgames."

poor clock mgmt and predicable play calling were the reasons we lost the SB - T.O. would have been MVP - can't have 3 picks and expect to win - and I forgot to mention the puking in Jacksonville - embarrasing

Mcnabb was our best chance at the superbowl even though he is inaccurate at times that makes you want to pull your hair out we all have to face reality mcnabb is way better than kolb thats why he was the backup maybe kolb turns out to be a good QB but were going to have to wait at least two years to even speak of competing for a superbowl

Wolf, you are a stupid, stupid redneck. Open your box of cracker jacks and STFU. Just be happy you have a white QB to root for. Just ironic the qb you root for has the initials of KKK. No, its not an accident.

McNabb will never win a Super Bowl anywhere. His history has proven that fact. He can not and does not come up big in Championship games.

If anybody read the story about Mcnabb check down progression you would all know who is the idiot. he could have someone wide open downfield but have to throw in progression no matter what. tell me it's the QB's fault when he's ordered to follow his checkdowns and not use his head.

Thank god he gone. Now we won't have to see anymore gutter balls thrown at the feet of the player he is trying to get the ball to. And that stupid grin after doing so. Go BIRDS

Look at this team from it's own persepective. The offense will rely on YAK to move the ball, by it's own coaches admissions. They will try to develop some semanence of a running game based on acquisitions during the off season. The defense has multiple question marks with a possibility of 5 new faces starting. There is talk of combining 3-4 and 4-3 defensive schemes. Does this all sound like a confident strategy going into this season? Sounds like a whole lot of "ifs" to consider this team even a playoff contendor.

Very simply..Kevin Kolb does not have the arm or the mobility to be anything but an very average QB...that's just the facts. Read any professional analysis on him, they are all the same..a serviceable QB, nothing special.

Wolf....you are awful cocky about a kid with a spaghetti arm...hope your right but I'll believe it when I see it...and something tells me the "promised land" is still 3 to 4 years away, if at all...this team is lacking in too many other areas to be a SB contender..or even a wannabe....

Some of my long time Redskins fans are very unhappy that they now have McNabb. They said just what we need the worm killer on our team. The Eagles have known for the last couple of years that McNabb was done. Andy was blinded by the light with him. The front office seen enough of his poor play and not being able to score in the redzone. He is no longer here so either support the Eagles or go with Donnie to DC. Donnie will lose for the 4th time in a row on opening day to the Cowboys!!!!!

As a long time Eagles fan I hope Kolb and this defense can take this ream to the superbowl and win like most of these bloggers think. However most superbowl teams have had an o-line that has played together for some years to form some consistancy as well as the defense. I don't see that with this team. When either wasn't playing well over the last 11 years super 5 kept the Eagles competitive and close enough to win games. Now maybe Kolb has what it takes but two games and the two longest interception returns for TD's in franchise history leaves me wondering what does everyone see? Hopefully he is the next Joe Montana or Tom Brady because that is what this franchise needs in addition to some help on defense, major help! Let's see the blogs at the end of the season!

please keep printing articles about mcnabb... its as close as we will come to a winner this season. 11 draft picks and we still could not come out of it with a real d-end. once again we draft linebacker sized d-ends... yeah.... well atleast we have the phillies and flyers to cheer on.

It's okay McNabb. Sometimes things don't happen like you expected to happen. Unfortunatley you never won one with Philadelphia. But you'll always be my number one fave quarterback. Hopefully you get one in Washington. You deserve one. I may be too young to know how you played when you got drafted because I'm 14. But I want to thank you for the 11 years in Philadelphia. Hey look on the bright side, at least you had more good times than bad. McNabb I wish you nothing but the BEST of luck in Washington. Have a good season.

DJR.....exactly! Where is Reid's apology for being an ignorant, stubborn man? He WASTED Dmac's prime years and ROBBED Philly of a title with his reluctance to run, reluctance to provide Dmac top-quality receivers, and his ridiculously easy-to-defend offensive "schemes" that fooled nobody in the championship games and SB. Reid is much more to blame than Dmac but will never admit it.

again, he is about 3 years too late, 3 months , whatever. why didnt he apologize right after the last dallas game ? instead of saying the season was "outstanding" after not beating 1 playoff team. again he shows his brilliant quick thinking. for a guy who was a communcations major, he really sucks at public communication. and anything else involving uh decision making, thinking, throwing a football accurately, or making logical predictions.

MG44, I agree that if McNabb had a little more edge to him, he would be more accepted, because his silliness does grate on a lot of people. Those playing the QB position tend to be more serious. As for the racial component, look at how the people here loved Dawkins, and still do. Many of McNabbs issues tend to be with black people or athletes or ex-atheletes. he's never criticized in the national media. I remember interviews before he was traded that the Eagles could get a top 10 1st round pick for him; however many Eagles fans knew otherwise. Hey, Jaworski was booed here, just like Schmidt. It's like music, how many blacks listen to Led Zepplin, but how many whites listened to Motown. You like who you like.

    K. Kolb won't be leading the Eagles anywhere but the bottom of the NFC East, how long do you think he'll be able to throw those slants and dink and dunk routes after they realize he can't throw long? He's already an INT machine. By midseason M. Vick will be QB of this team.

McNabb didn't have to say anything, and he's actually apologized to the fans. When was the last time that happened in Philadelphia? You'd have to have a hard heart to not think that was sincere. The rest of the country, full of the bad "Philly fan" cliche, thinks we don't deserve an apology. I think we all know that short of winning a ring in D.C., McNabb will retire an Eagle, and when that happens, about 99.9% of Eagles fans will shed a few tears.

An apology? This was just another inappropriate action like the air guitar, sideline telephone, giggling at crunch time...on and on. An apology was not needed and made no sense. I guess he just does not "Get it" and never will.

To Timetostopthis, McNabb has been called many things in this town and on these boards, but nobody else - to my knowledge - has referred to him as a "street thug." Perhaps, if he carried himself with more of that vibe, he'd have been more popular with certain fans and media members here. To any reasonable people out there, his apology was not necessary -and not a big deal- but it is somewhat appreciated. I will remain a big fan, and even though I'm a lifelong Birds fan, will root for him to finally get a Lombardi, even if improbable. Now if he went to Minn or Ari, I'd really like his chances. The shame in all this? For all the accepted wisdom that he couldn't win the big gone (and for every failure, there were many more big wins), The guy's career has been about winning. Just check where he ranks in lifetime wins and winning percentage, and 9-7 in the playoffs is much better than a lot of revered HOF-ers. His stats were not overwhelming, if you only look at completion % and the like, but he won games, and sometimes with a poor supporting cast offensively that was not conducive to posting gaudy game day stats. Oh yes, for every "worm burner" or pass that was not on stride, he threw multiple lasers between the numbers that most qbs could not. For every time that he held the ball too long, there were mutiple timesthat he either avoided sacks (desire, agility, strength) or improbably kept plays alive. An dyes, Michael Jack Schmidt never hit a clutch hr..he was similarly assailed but without the racial component and without all the 24/7 non-journalism here. Lack of perspective, low self-esteem and inferiority complexes of fans and media here, racial thinking and downright resentment have been staples of McNabb's tenure here. He owed us good play, a strong work ethic, good citizenship and a strong effort, and we certainly got that - for 11 years. Sorry that all this was lost on so many posters, columnists, talking heads and fans here.

Listen I've loved the eagles for a long time. I miss Dawkins, White, and Trotter. These were the people that meant the most to me. I learned something the other day, "we as fans have to stick together because all we have is each other." Embrace our team no matter who we have on our team, they do this for us and not the money...... IF THEY DONT who cares about them but I ask out of all football fans and players looks at people like RAY LEWIS and ED REED they had nothing and gave everything for it............... REMEMBER THEM AND PUT FOURTH THE SAME EFFORT

I haven't been a big fan of McNabb's interactions with the press, and hopefully, with a new coach and organization, he will be more open. That said, he APOLOGIZED today for not leading the Eagles to a championship. What else do you want? How many titles have the Eagles won, and how many quality QBs have they had? I think Kolb will be good, but it is a little early to put him in Canton. By the way, the same people who think Kolb will be a stud, thought Demps and Sean Jones were good replacements for a Pro Bowl, all-time Eagle safety. Dawkins was totally disrespected; the Eagles should NEVER live that down.

This is easy: McNabb made something out of nothing during most of his career. He was the best QB in Eagles' history. I am sorry to see him go. However, as an Eagles fan, I stay loyal. I hope Kolb succeeds. He's been put in a great situation. If he doesn't I'm not going to make stupid comments like the McNabb haters. In fact, Andy Reid will somehow mess this up. His offensive strategies are not conducive to SB success. Reid has been the reason the Eagles have fallen short.

Why did we hand a division rival a better QB than we kept? How do I know he's better? Because Kolb couldn't take the job - the better QB had to be gone before he could be the starter.

Thanks, Donovan for your efforts as an Eagle. Times change. As an older veteran, he has limited seasons ahead. Make the most of each game. Andy Reid rolled the dice. There is no more McNabb to kick-around. Lets see if he really was the one holding the team back--or-if the problems are more entrenched that just QB.

One and four to be exact, Steve. Which is a record Kolb won't have to worry about because he won't sniff 5 NFC championship games. I don't expect him to be a bust, but I see no reason to think he'll be anywhere near the quarterback Donovan was. I don't expect McNabb to do great things in Washington, either, unless he somehow proves to be a more consistant pocket passer than he was here. One player (QB) can't play the other positions. The QB can't block, catch, or play defense. The Iggles never had a great receiving corps for McNabb and their offense has as much imagination as a blank CD. Reid and his staff are proven bridesmaids and will never win the big one. Just look at the record. Donovan, please check your ego, there is no "I" in team.

I don't understand the animosity towards Donavan. He gave his all for 11 years here. He won a ton of games, and brought us to 4 NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. He wasn't perfect, but then again no one is. He was an excellent QB who made the most of for the most part poor O-Lines and receivers. I do believe that it is time to move on, but I still wish him well.

The Patriots could have been cheating on this first half of the Super Bowl, but it wasn't working as they were on the ropes. It was McNabb who sprayed the ball all over the place near the goal line two separate series. The game was lost in the first half. Apology NOT accepted.

KK did pretty well in 2 starts. Donovan has shown he can do it for the whole season. However, I am impressed by the way Kolb conducts himself. It is ridiculous to compare Kolb to Klingler and Ware. A better comparison would probably be Aaron Rodgers although to me KK seems more assertive. Glad to hear McNabb express some regret althought I don't think people are appreciative of what he accomplished and the physical pounding he took sometimes as a Philadelphia Eagles QB.

Wolf writes: "the ringless one had the best defense in the nfc and all pro brian westbrook and he couldn't even lead the team over the tampa bay bucs who beat a horrible raiders team"...Wolfie, do us all a favor and stick to ranting, because when you try and inject FACTS into your arguments, you expose yourself as a typical WIP lemming, steeped in revisionist history. For the record: during the 2002 season, the Eagles did NOT have the "best defense in the NFC". Statistically from a yards and points allowed per game standpoint, the best defense in the NFC (and in fact the whole NFL) was...The Tampa Bay Bucs. Tampa's defense in 2002 featured THREE future hall of famers in Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, and Ronde Barber. Also, Brian Westbrook wasn't much of a factor in the '03 game against Tampa, since that was his rookie year and he was sitting the bench behind Staley and Dorsey Levens, and had all of TWO carries in that game. But other than all that, another fantastic, "objective" analysis by one of those "knowledgable" Philly sports fans the talking heads at WIP are always talking about. Well done, sir.

Super Bowl or not he still was the best QB in recent Eagles history. It was a great ride and I personally will be ashamed if Donovan isnt recieved well when he comes back. He wanted to stay but the business had to move him,but why to the Redskins? Remember...Dawkins left for a major payday and Donovan was traded. Please keep that in mind.

I know what the writers say about McNabb (defensive) but he didn't come across that way to me, even during the TO situation. But, he didn't seem to have the eye of the tiger, either, even during big games. I agree with Repeat: McNabb is a good, not great, QB, who yielded good results.

The difference between Kolb and Klinger/Ware, is that the latter two were both thrown into the fire pretty quick, and ultimately failed because they needed to learn a completely different system on the fly. Kolb had three years of tutoring and apprenticeship under McNabb and Reid. He has seen the ins and outs, been in some games, now it's time for his final exam to see if he is for real. People are so down on him for his arm, but in this system you don't need a cannon arm like McNabb, you need to make the little throws, the simple ones, the ones McNabb struggled with routinely. McNabb was great, won a ton of games, had great numbers, but in the end 10 years of ALMOST just don't cut it anymore. Thank you 5, now let's get behind Kolb and pray for a title haha. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES....AND GO FLYERS.

I have a bad feeling that with McNabb gone we are going to expose our true weakness. The worst Game-Time Coach in football. The opposing defenses know what play Reid is going to run before he does. I just hope Kolb does a better job of getting the team out of the hole that moran gets us into week after week. He is a GM at best...

Thanks DM! You gave us an exciting run of football in Philly after many long losing seasons. You, I, and the REAL Eagles fans understand what you gave us for a decade, and we're thankful for it. There's only two games this season I won't be pulling for you, but that's to be expected. You're a better man than some of these so called Eagles fans who can't bring themselves to acknowledge what you did for this franchise...but don't take them seriously, lord knows most of us don't either. Thanks 5!

Did McNabb say in the interview if he packed his air guitar and brought it with him? Maybe he'll switch to air drums for a change? What do you think DooDoo...you haven't commented on this yet? Any word on McNabbs commitment to the Washington Nationals to help Stephen Strasburg with his slider that hits the dirt at the feet of the batters?

McNabb gave me and the rest of us the best 11 years of football we have witnessed in this city. It was the right time to leave. We came up short in a lot of big games, but he always had me on the edge of my seat. I know when you come back, I will be giving u a ten minute standing ovation. No need to apologize. You are a class act and it will be hard to fill ur shoes. I just cant believe the Eagles traded you to the Redskins. But I support the Eagles, not individual players, so lets go Birds.

I echo the sentiments of Repeat1stdown. I've always been of the belief that if a player gives his all on the field, which I believe McNabb did, and is a character guy, which McNabb has proven to be, then that's all you can ask. If I hated every player who never brought my favorite team a championship, then I'd be an extremely bitter person in life...I do wish 5 would of connected with the fans and the local media more. When held to the standard that McNabb is, with millions of eyes watching your every move, you're gonna get the good, the bad and the ugly side of people. It's unavoidable. If you dwell on the bad and the ugly, then that can lead to alienating yourself from the good...Philly is a tough town, unfair sometimes. But if a person can remain true and recognize the BS for what it is, then these fans will embrace you. Don't know if McNabb ever got that...Just know 5, you do have real fans here. Speaking for myself, I 100% appreciate your tenure as QB with the Eagles, and wish you could of completed your goal of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy wearing the midnight green uniform, but such is life. All the best to you bro...

Everyone with a half a brain knows you didn't play defense, Donovan. You did your job on offense in the Super Bowl and scored over 20 points against the Patriots, who were probably cheating anyway. Everyone knows you didn't play defense, and that defense wins championships. Thanks for the memories. Good luck in DC. Too bad your career will be effectively over after a subpar year or two there.

If the only criteria for projecting a QB was based on other players that came from the same school, you might be right josh moneyman. Both Ware and Klingler played under John Jenkins' version of the run and shoot, so they could fairly be compared. Kolb played under Art Briles and was given plenty of time to learn the Eagle's offense. No guarantees that he will be a franchise QB, but he has been developed and has seen some playing time. Let's give him a chance at least . . .

Good luck in Washington, if we don't win, I'll pull for you to be playing Dawk in the Superbowl.

I think every Eagles fan should thank #5 for all of the wins he led us to, and for putting the franchise on the map for over a decade. How quickly everyone forgets what this team was like before he arrived. It's unfortunate that we didn't win a Super Bowl while he was here, but it's not entirely his fault. There are 53 players on the roster, not just one, and many of those players were a huge disappointment. Plus, the coach hasn't exactly been Vince Lombardi with his in-game decisions and game plans (remember Dallas?!). Donovan's an all around good guy, and we as fans should pat him on the back and say thanks, then everyone move on to the future..both the Eagles and him... P.S. It's also time for the writers in Philly to stop writing about it everyday. It's very old news now, you're writing the same article over and over in different form, and there's nothing else to say about it.

Eagles fans when Donovan played his first full year, we knew we had a player especially with the dearth of offense talent around him. He's gone now with over a decade of good football from the Eagles with McNabb the quarterback. Trust me we'll know if Kolb can play by the end of the season. If he sucks, we're back to being the whipping boys of the NFC East.

I am curious to see how happy DeMouth Jackson will be when he is banged up and missing games be week 4. Being someone who had his most success catching the ball 40 yards downfield, his numbers will drop substancially with a qb who cant go downfield. And if he thinks he can make a living catching slants, remind him he is only 150 pounds.

If we needed a final closure column for a departed player, let this be it. Surely the "town-hall" meeting between the local press and the position coaches held recently can generate more than what we've seen written so far. He's gone, let it go. Let's write about the *current* Eagles team, not parts of the past. It's getting old and it surely shows that subject matter is hard to come by for some writers. Put it to rest already!
