McNabb: 'I think I will be more cheered'

POSTED: Tuesday, September 28, 2010, 12:38 PM

Donovan McNabb said he expects to be cheered Sunday when he returns to Lincoln Financial Field for the first time since he was traded to the Washington Redskins, at least “until the whistle blows and the game starts.”

“Honestly, I think I will be more cheered,” McNabb said today on his weekly radio show in on ESPN-980 in Washington. “No matter what the situation is, right now I’m with a different team and it’s a rival and it wasn’t my choice. We had a successful 11 years. We had a lot of exciting plays and obviously some down times, but there were more exciting things in 11 years.”

McNabb also reiterated that “I wasn’t the one looking to get out.”

McNabb said he has not yet thought about what his emotions will be on Sunday.

“I truly haven’t,” he said. “Everyone else that I’ve talked to has and rightly so. I’ve been on the other side of the tide with other guys who have come in, Brian Dawkins, Troy Vincent and the list goes on, Jeremiah Trotter …

“I think in this situation, I’ll be open-minded at what happens … Everyone wants to know how I feel, my emotions. I really can’t answer that. Right now, it’s just focusing on playing against the Philadelphia Eagles. I would have an answer for you during the game about my emotions and how I felt during the game. I’m all in here in Washington and looking forward to turning things around.”

McNabb said he understands why people are making it “a bigger story,” but he says these situations have happened before and “as a player, life goes on.”

“I’ve always said that I look at it just like a normal game,” he said. “This is game the Washington Redskins need. It wouldn’t matter if it were the Cowboys or the Giants. After the last two weeks, this is a must-win situation for us. We just look forward to the challenge.”

McNabb said he has spoken with Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb over the last few weeks and hopes to talk to Andy Reid, although Reid indicated he is not allowed to talk to a player on another team, per NFL rules.

“I think this week is going to be the same as us communicating and see how each other is doing and wish each other luck. Nothing out of the ordinary,” McNabb said of talking to Vick and Kolb. “I’ll talk to Andy, congratulate him on the last couple of weeks, find out what he’s having for lunch and dinner.

He said, laughing, “I’m trying to get Sean McDermott’s number to get some clues to what he’s trying to do this game, maybe Asanté Samuel, Trent Cole, Stewart Bradley.”

Donovan has always been a class act and very under appreciated in Philly. He will be and should be applauded for all he has done for this franchise.

It will be fun if Samuel gets a couple of picks, Cole gets a couple of sacks and Bradley helps stuff the run game.

what is this class act load everyone talks about? Just because he handled his issues with the team in a more passive-aggresive tone than, say, TO, doens't make him a class act.

What exactly is classy about what he said about the Eagles QB situation? What exactly is classy about the fact he still TO THIS DAY can't get over the fact that 40 bozos from a radio station booed the front office on draft day for not taking Ricky Williams? What exactly is classy about having his mommy and daddy have to stick up for him in the media? Do you hear about any other QB's parentsin the media? Really? Any sport (besides Lindros?)? Thought so.

What's so classy about the excuses he makes for his play, and that he can NEVER take responsibility? It always comes down to game management, running the ball, weapons, or a holding call like he used this weekend. Which may all be true to a degree, but after 10+ years you'd think he'd know by now he's not perfect and can own up to his mistakes. He's not perfect.

I'm sick of his whole schtick, and if he really thinks he'll be more cheered, he'll be sorely disappointed Sunday.

I watched this guy play an entire half of football on a broken leg. I watched him take undertalented offenses deep into the playoffs year after year in spite of ridiculously predictable playcalling and poor clock management on the part of Reid and the coaching staff. Anybody that boos McNabb is a complete moron that knows NOTHING about football and thinks it begins and ends with the QB. This guy has my respect, without a doubt; and I, for one, will cheer for him.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 1:26 PM, 09/28/2010
I would cheer him, he gave his all and acomplished alot here, just not enough. Hes was great, but not great enough. My only complaint with some fans is that they fail to remember how much worse things have been at the QB position for us in the past. Donovan didn't deliver on his potential but he did come close and gave us many exciting years of football. It always seemed to me that he was physically tough but not mentally tough. He was neurotic and prententious and in the end I think that is what prevented him from gaining the full respect and confidewnce of his teammates, becoming a great leader and winning the Super Bowl. Yay?

what makes him classy CJ84? The fact that he isn't in the news for rape, drunken driving, drugs, gun possession. The fact that he has donated to charities in Philadelphia and beyond, more money than a lot of people will make in their entire lifetime, and I believe more so than any other athlete in Philadelphia ever has so far. The fact that he turned a team which was pretty bad for years and years, into a team that made it to the Super Bowl and has the 3rd most wins since 2000 in the NFL, all despite never being fully appreciated. There is more to life than football tough guy, despite what you and your World of Warcraft friends think. So before you go calling someone classy because they threw incompletions in a game or an interception that cost the Eagles a win, think about what YOU have done in your life. I'd be willing to bet my life McNabb has accomplished more in 33 years of his life than you will in 15 different lifetimes. You sir, are a loser.

    EaglesBleedMoney,

So your first point his its what he DOESN'T DO that makes him classy. Interesting. As to charity, yeah that's nice and we can all appreciate and respect that part of his legacy here.

As for what I've done? I'm the last person you want to call out on that. Have you ever worked 3 part time jobs for non profits trying to pay off student loans and serve your community? Ever move 1/2 way across the country for a $200 a week "salary" because you wanted to rebuilt a non-profit agency in the area and restore it to what it once was? Ever run through your nest egg in the process and set your finincial viability back by over a decade, jsut to serve your community?

    I doubt it.

PS> I hate World of Warcraft.

There were some frustrating times, for sure, but if you boo McNabb you're just a spiteful fan or, at least, just booing for the sake of booing. He brought us a lot of wins, a lot of excitement, and the days before him were pretty awful.

I hope he gets a nice reception but if he was underappreciated when he was on the team, how do think the classless losers will treat him? That 10% will be what the nat'l media covers. They're salivating waiting for it to happen. In any case, I'm glad the Eagles have the best QB on the current roster starting. It's obvious Vick gives them the best chance to win. If morons like Bill(myIQis)20 need a pro athlete to be their role model they have a seriously sad life & I pity them. Go Eagles! Once the clock starts, though, Mc5 is just the deadskins QB.

I think McNabb will be cheered the entire game. Whether he's introduced or when he runs out on the field for the first play, he'll be cheered. Then the fans will continue to cheer throughout the game when he's throwing balls at the feet or over the heads of his receivers, getting sacked, mismanaging the time and even possibly throwing up. I hate Vick but he will tear that defense to shreds and the Birds will romp!! It'll be cheers all afternoon.

hey...There is Donovaniswitarealteamnow...you need to change the name to donovanplaysfortheteamthatlosttostlouis...where were you after the losses that were mostly on mcnabbs shoulders. more chokes by #5. what happened to that great run game that he didn't have in philly? disappeared. what happened to his drives against st louis, a team who has now won 2 games in 29? disappeared. the interception the overthrows and underthrows. nope. i am perfectly happy where the eagles are right now. real team? how about last place in the nfc east this year and years to come and mcnabb will end his career on a team that will never make the playoffs while he is qb?

    EaglesBleed$,
Haha nice. But don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I'd boo the guy when he's announced. Like you said, out of respect for the entirety of his career here (and perhaps even more out of spite for the national media's perception of us fans here), I'd refrain from booing when he's first announced Sunday. But after that, all bets are off.

I said what I said in response to the first guy's comments about McNabb being a "class act", and I guess it depends on one's definition of class as to what your opinion of him is. For all the reasons I listed eariler, I'd say no. IMO, I don't care how many checks you write or how large they are, or how many DUIs you DON'T have or how many dogs you DON'T kill, it doesn't make you classy if you act like that, period. Perhaps if you went through some of the things I have, or have spent enough time behind the scenes at a non-profit, you'd see where I'm coming from. But I assume that you haven't, so I agree to disagree.

cj84, Never heard of lebron's mom huh? or the interview kk's dad did. It seems fox, abc, espn can't even start the games until they show the opposing QB's family in the box. and all the reporting on who's dating who and where are they sitting, that's even worse. The girlfriend could be gone tomorrow a least parents are in it for the long haul.

i'm generally a mcnabb supporter, but he is so annoying. he's only classy to the people who get sucked into his passive-aggressive BS. he whines about something, then always says "but i don't pay attention to that kind of stuff" after a 10 minute whine session on the subject. he was a very good player for the eagles, but his whining left something to be desired.

I love how we are all psychics and we seem to know exactly who can or cant win the "big one". I can remember writers and fans saying Jordan wouldnt win a championship, Elway would never win the big one, Peyton Manning is a choke artist and would never win the big one, Steve Young was just successful because of the system and would never win the big one, Eli manning just isnt good enough to win the big one. Alex Rodriguez, comes up small in clutch moments and cant win the big one, Curt Schilling is not a winner, cant win it, the red sox wont break the curse etc etc etc. Can we all just let good players play their careers out and hopefully their teams can catch up to them or them to their teams and see if they win it. what would u think if donovan wins it in year 14, or 15, or 16."what a winner, etc, etc" or how about reid? football is said to be "the ultimate team sport" if trent dilfer can win a superbowl ring as the starting qb then i believe that Donovan McNabb can.

Can someone give me an answer as to how you whine in a monotone? And how does the same old "have to watch the film and be very critical of yourself" blaming someone else. And finally. why is it that most "experts" can say:That football team is too young to make the next step. Needs some more seasoning" And everyone says yea, that sounds about right, but "We showed our youth" is somehow untrue.

The people (like CJ84) who don't see how McNabb is classy are strange to me -- I really don't understand what you want him to do to be more classy. And why anyone would boo him at the beginning of the game is beyond me -- there is no reason to do anything but cheer the guy who made us a relevant team for the past 11 years. As for Vick versus McNabb, I still prefer McNabb. Vick is exciting right now, but he has an average track record in his career and just played two bad teams...plus he is still a question mark in my mind as a truly rehabilitated person, even though I agree he seems to be doing and saying the right things for now.

McNabb WAS the best Eagles QB yet, hands down, but he is past his prime and on the decline. I also think he didn't get as much help offensively as he needed. That being said, it was time for him to go, time for a change, and I can't wait for Vick to light up the Skins on Sunday!!! GO BIRDS!

You know what is really classy? Doing a noble cause and not getting on some website and getting on your high horse saying what a great person you are and then spouting off because you put yourself back financially for a decade. And just because you work for a non-proft organization does not make you Ghandi. Your work may be noble and respected but your actions are not. BTW, I guarantee McNabb gets way more cheers than boos and I will be there.

Eagles fans' true colors will come out on Sunday. The fact that we're still talking about what a "dissappointment" he's been shows how ignorant and spoiled Eagles fans truly are. I've got a special plan for any fan who sits in front of me at the Linc on Sunday. I'm gonna get so drunk and debauched in the parking lot beforehand that when I get to my seats, and they announce #5's name before kickoff, I'll have no choice but to empty my stomach contents on whomever is in front of me at the time. I hope it's not someone's little girl but I can't control that part of it.That's the only appropriate response to this situation and one the deserves to represent Philly in front of the national media. Oh, and I prefer McNabb over Vick - any day and watch out for late helmet shots to the knees.

Puh-leaze....most non-profits and not-for-profits are a joke. They make money by begging for it from people and businesses that DO make money. Yes, some are doing worthwhile, above-board things, but most are not and the idea that simply be being involved with or associated with a non-profits is somehow makes one a better person is ridiculous. That being said, cheer McNabb for his 11 years of service before the game when he is announced and then treat him with the respect due an opposing quarterback come game time.

Cheer him people!! I will in section 236! The world is expecting us not to. Don't be idiots! Stand up and applaud/cheer him before kickoff, and then remain standing and yell your brains out when he's behind center so he can't hear the snap count.

    Thank you Donovan!

You're the greatest QB in Eagles history, but GO BIRDS!!

All you dumb so called Eagles fans that wanna boo D.Mac ought to check out other teams 'backs that were drafted.Such as Leaf,Marinovich,Leinhardt and Carr for example and see if we were lucky to have Donovan.

I hope the fans cheer him and then we will find out 2 things, will Donavan finally forgive the ""few"" fan from the Draft Day booing and will the national media change their tune about Philly fans. Stayed tuned!!

McNabb was choice on draft day. If we had picked Ricky Williams, He would be in the burbs trying to score some weed.

Maybe he'll get so overwhelmed with emotion he'll puke on the field...again. Maybe this week he'll FINALLY complete some passes to an Eagles player. I look forward to watching him under and overthrow balls all day long on that field while not wanting to kick him in his.
