McNabb, Reid taking some hits

POSTED: Saturday, August 8, 2009, 7:34 AM

Eagles coach Andy Reid and quarterback Donovan McNabb are taking some hits -- and somewhat unfair hits, by the way -- from national media entities over the last day or so. With so much going on at Lehigh and then Jim Johnson's memorial service, we wanted to catch you up on a few links before practice resumes at training camp.

First, former Philly guy and Delaware quarterback Rich Gannon, who now works as an analyst for Sirius Radio, ranked the quarterbacks in the NFC East. His list:

1. Tony Romo

2. Donovan McNabb

3. Eli Manning

4. Jason Campbell

Here is what Gannon said about McNabb, citing McNabb's workouts in Arizona -- not mentioning that he brings teamates with him -- as a problem.

"Tony Romo ahead of Donovan McNabb, it's by just a hair. I think that Donovan McNabb is a solid player in Philadelphia. I think he certainly gives them the best chance to win. Remarkable run, all those championship games that they've been to. But they haven't gotten over the hump and that's the thing that concerns me a little bit. The other thing is, I'd love to see Donovan McNabb stay in Philadelphia in the offseason and train with that football team. I just have a hard time with a guy who packs up at the end of the season and moves out to Arizona; he lives out there and works out there. I just think, in this day and age, with the amount of money you're talking about and the importance of that offseason program, that I want my quarterback in town in Philadelphia."

He was not necessarily very flattering of Romo, either, talking about how he can finally focus now that he has dumped Jessica Simpson, gotten rid of T.O. and put his golf clubs away. He did say Romo has the "best skills" among the four.

Second, the National Football Post's Michael Lombardi has ranked the worst game managers in the NFL.

Reid comes in fourth on the list, behind Marvin Lewis, St. Louis assistant head coach Dick Curl and Reid disciple Brad Childress.

Here is Lombardi on Reid:

4. Andy Reid: I can’t understand how a coach as smart as Reid, who has won as many games as he has in Philadelphia (107, including playoffs) can manage games with such a carefree attitude. His overtime tie in Cincinnati is legendary in terms of game management. He often had Jim Johnson to bail him out, but now, unfortunately Jim isn’t there, so this might be worth watching.

*

And we were happy to see that we got some good conversation going yesterday about the biggest concerns you have about the Eagles thus far. The poll and discussion is still ongoing. Feel free to keep at it by clicking here.

Gannon needs to learn the facts before he tries to put someone down. McNasty does train with the team in AZ. What a tool!!!! How in the he!! does he put Romeo in front in McNabb? His numbers aren't better, his wins aren't better, his playoff record isn't better....need I say more????

Im a realistic eagle fan here and both these guys are dead on. In order to win a superbowl Reid and McNabb must come to terms with their weaknesses, perceived or otherwise, and just take steps to correct the same problems that plagued us in the big games the last ten years. Unless this is done, we can expect a 9-7 team and 1 playoff victory if we are lucky. Here are some things becoming clear; Abiamiri and Trevor Laws are busts, Shawn Andrews may never play again and the offensive line is a joke, Maclin is a year away as is McCoy, losing Jim Johnson is bigger than you know, and McNabb and Reid are still the same. Lucky to win 9 games and sneak into playoffs but if Jackson and Westbook get hurt we will be in the running for the overall #1 pick next year. Once again Joe Banner you show yourself to be the most pompous fool in sports history.

So let me get this straight......Gannon ranks McNabb 2nd because, although he's helped his team to 5 NFC Championship games and a SuperBowl, he can't win "the big one". But he ranks Romo ahead of McNabb, and Romo has never even won a playoff game.....righhhhht.

After years of heartbreak, I'm convinced that the Birds will never win the Superbowl with McNabb as QB and/or Reid as coach. They both choke in really big games and that will never change. They had their shot, now it's time to move on.

I'm not the biggest McNabb supporter but Romo? C'mon. Until the guy does anything in the playoffs and stops fumbling he can not even be mentioned in the same breath as McNabb. Think about John Elway. They guy was amazing but couldn't "get over the hump" until his final two years in the NFL. I don't think Romo will ever get close to sniffing McNabb's jock..

Romo? He chokes. Gannon's still trying to figure our that Tampa Bay defense. Is it me or are Iggles going to be snakebit with injuries this year?

High praise, taking Andy over Richie the K. I'd have Bruntlett coach the Eagles before Richie the K.

With that being said, Bill1966 you must be smoking crack. Build your team around those qb's? Then go move to Dallas and enjoy the year after year of disappointment. No matter how much you may hate TO, even in Philly we can admit what he did for Donovan, the Eagles, and Philadelphia. Without TO, Dallas and Romo are done. Won't even make the playoffs, mark my words.

I love and support the Eagles all the way, but i have to agree with the opinions expressed in the article. Andy Reid, despite a winning record, is horrible at time, clock, ball, and game management. Donovan, irregardless of who he invites to work out in Arizona, needs to live and work out in the immediate area of Philadelphia. Just a lack of committment to this city, team, and pursuit of perfection aka super bowl championship.

McNabb is 6-0 in playoff operners, Romo is 0-2 in playoff openers and Romo has had a much better cast in his 2 years then McNabb has all his career.

McNabb behind Romo..GMAFB. At least 5 doesn't fade in December and has won some playoff games. To AR time management is putting the magazines in chronological order. Typically burns 2 1st quarter TOs getting the play in late or lackadaisical huddling. Granted, you don't have to run far huddling for a 3 and out series.

Be real folks, as much as it hurts all of us, these are the facts: the Andrews’ brothers and Cornelius Ingram will not play this year because of prior knee injuries (too early to come back), and of course Shawn’s documented problems of late (not sure he’ll ever play for the eagles again). Victor Abiamiri is a bust – they know, we know, everybody knows; but they insist on force feeding him to us because there is no other option. Projected record, 10-6, just another typical Andy winning but ho-hum season. I HOPE I’M WRONG!

You can say a lot about McNabb but don't knock his work ethic. He works out hard in Arizona. Get off his back.

Just remember what this feels like. Ya know, perrenial challenger for a superbowl, annual favorite to win the division, deep playoff runs, pro-bowl caliber players at most positions... When McNabb and Reid are gone, you haters will be the first ones clamoring to bring them back. Anybody want Ray (not in our house) Rhodes, Rich (we left it all out there today) Kotite, Buddy (Early playoff exit) Ryan? How bout Bobby (QB of the Future) Hoying, TY (golly gee) Detmer, Rodney (Holly-Robinson) Peete???? You Haters are idiots.

You know, if it wasn't for the tie in Cinncinatti, the Eagles would have never made it to the playoffs, so the tie was the best thing for the Eagles.

The only contest that Romo has actually won in the last few years is the race to beat the other forty suiters into jessica's pants. Not only does he freeze up under pressure he's a chinadoll QB. What happens this year when he is out 6 weeks with an ingrown toenail? No team would ever consider him a leader and that's why dallas couldn't even compete last year even with the media chosen probowlers.

Romo better than McNabb....lmao. McNabb is far from perfect, but Romo is the epitome of a guy who comes up small in the clutch. I think Gannon may have taken too many hits.

I have immense respect for Romo's skills, but until he wins a pressure game or two, there's no way he can be ranked ahead of McNabb. As for Reid, has anyone been so terrible with the red flag as he? But I'll take his questionable play-calling over run-run-pass-punt Rich Kotite any day and twice on Sunday.

Mike Lombardi is right on the money. How many times have all of us cursed at the tv because of Reid's bad clock management?

It's true, Reid is a horrible game coach, from his poor clock management, to his predictable one-sided play calling, to his cluelessness with red-flag challenges. But his openness, honesty, and great warmth with the media redeems all that. McNabb is better than the other three NFC East QBs; which doesn't say all that much, really.

Romo better than McNabb is laughable. Any NFL QB could look good throwing to Jason Witten and T.O. Romo is a great guy, but a mediocre QB with a strong supporting cast. Exactly which NFC Championship game did Romo play in?

Game management is Reid's weakness, no question. It may be the biggest reason for no Super Bowl yet.
