McNabb in town working out with former teammates

POSTED: Wednesday, June 22, 2011, 3:35 PM

Look who is back in town, working out with his former teammates and maybe even tossing one or two at their feet.

It’s Donovan McNabb.

If you’re too young to remember, McNabb was an Eagles quarterback of some note. He led the team to its second Super Bowl after the 2004 season. He was steeped in various dramas along the way, much of it his own doing. He also is, like him or not, the greatest quarterback in Eagles’ history.

McNabb was traded to Washington on Easter Sunday 2010. He did not lead the Redskins to the playoffs, and was actually benched down the stretch of a lost season.

McNabb, 34, got together yesterday in South Jersey with Jason Avant and Jeremy Maclin, among others, according to his publicist Rich Burg. “He has been working out in Arizona with the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald and other wide receivers from around the league,” Burg said. “Now that he is on the East Coast, he wanted to continue to throw to wide receivers.”

There is nothing sinister about McNabb being back in Philly, quite the opposite. He is here to help dedicate the McNabb Family NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees, N.J. The ceremonies are today and Donovan will attend along with his wife, Raquel.

“All four of his children were born at Virtua,” Burg said. “When his twins were born in 2008, they spent time 2 weeks in the neonatal unit.”

McNabb’s participation goes way beyond just showing up. He made a six-figure donation to the unit and helped raise $2.5 million.

I don't know why everyone is being so critical of Donovan's accuracy. He is perfectly capable of throwing the ball in the ocean while standing on the end of a pier....I think. And his accuracy is equalled only by his leadership qualities, which are slim and none...and slim just left town.

For a guy who did a lot of finger pointing and blaming everyone but himself he sure does like it here. Maybe they were playing some guitar hero together.

McNabb is a great guy. Total class. Even though I'm glad we have Vick now, if Reid knew when to run the ball ( hint - third and inches) Or Banner hadn't been so cheep with J. Trott, we'd have gotten there and smoked the Raiders in 02' and if Banner hadn't been so hard nosed with TO we'd prob have gotten there in 05 or 06'.

Just what dramas were his own doing - Rush Limbaugh or T.O.? Glad to see all the fans and this jump at the chance to bash a class act who repeatedly took the Eagles farther than any QB in 50 years but defend the oft-injured convicted felon for his choices (Oh yeah - "mistakes"). Any such generous actions by Vick?

Didn't McNabb matter a while ago? All of the drama & idiocy seem somewhat familiar.

It's deja vu all over again, on the airwaves and on the board here.

@JPCase - it's easy to say he took us farther than any other QB, but look at the teams he played with overall, they had pro bowlers all over the field. Let's not be too quick to forget how Westbrook opened up the game by keeping the opposing defenses completely off balance and Johnson's blitz packages that gave opposing offenses nightmares.

What the What!!!!!!???????? Pro-bowlers all over the field???? Name all the pro-bowlers he had to work with at one time, while he was here. Collectively over his 10 1/2 years here you can count them on one hand, including Westbrook. Your comments like so many others on this board who call themselves fans are absurd. I would love to see him backup Vick, give Kolb the boot and help groom Kalfka.

    @eburd
    Let's do that. Offensive pro bowlers 2000 - 2008
    '01: Tra Thomas
'02: Tra Thomas, Chad Lewis, Jermaine Mayberry
    '03: Chad Lewis
    '04: T.O., Tra Thomas
    '05: Mike Bartrum (long snapper)
    '06: Shawn Andrews
    '07: Shawn Andrews, Brian Westbrook
    '08: None
Good argument! He was loaded with pro bowlers! It was like the 90's Cowboys & Bills.
Randall played with more pro bowlers & a better D and wasn't able to win a playoff game. (Although I do like Randall - he was not McNabb)

Separate the football player from the family man (albeit with a huge bank account!). Only Donovan and his wife know what they must have been going through when their infant twins had to be hospitalized for an extended time. All I know is that the man wore the uniform well and with pride, represented this city for a long time, his only baggage being coming up short in playoff games and not looking an interviewer in the eye while giving the stock standard NFL-speak answer to silly questions....I predict that as time wears on, just like Randall Cunningham, Donovans' overall body of work will be looked upon as "the good ole days" while they tear apart the latest QB wearing the Eagles uniform.
