Mayock: Reid deserves to remain Eagles coach

POSTED: Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 10:50 AM

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock concedes some trepidation about calling Thursday night's game between the Eagles and Seattle.

A Haverford School graduate and Newtown Square resident, Mayock said he is a little bit nervous about how to explain the current situation in Philadelphia to a national audience.

"I'm excited about doing a hometown game," he told Sports Illustrated's Peter King during a podcast this week. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. A part of me feels a little nervous about how to conveny what's going in Philadelphia and what the fair thing is and what's going to happen here next year and all those things. There is a lot more than meets the eye and I think it has to be handled with respect."

As for next year, though, Mayock is among those who think Andy Reid deserves to keep his job and return for another season.

"Philadelphia is a passionate city. I grew up here in West Philadelphia and I can say that. I understand it. It's Super Bowl win or bust. That's the attitude and I get it.

"What I try to tell people all the time is, there are 27 or 28 other NFL citieis that would give anything to have had the record Andy Reid has had the last 12 years. It seems like every year, he's in the final 4 or the final 6. The analogy I use is if you had 32 salesmen in the company and you have on guy who's a star but not a superstar and every year he finishes in the top 3, 4,5, are you going to fire him or pat him on the back and tell him to keep working hard and trying to get him to No. 1 ... They've got 5 games left, and think you find out a lot about people in these last five weeks. There are going to be some people that bail and there are going to be some peope that have just signed contracts and are new to town and don't really care and are gonig look around and say the grass is greener. We are going to find out a lot about exactly who cares and who doesn't in this organization over the next five games.

"I think Andy Reid deserves a second go-round ... May there be some changes in that staff? Maybe. At the end of the day, I think this guy deserves the opportunity to work it out moving forward."

As for King's view, "I've always thought if the players are still listening to you, if you're runnig a controlled ship, you're fine. You can withstand a real bad year, which is what they're going through this year. If you start having coaches arguing on the sidelines and have to bench your star receiver because you sense he's maybe not trying or giving it 100 percent, now my thought is a little bit difrerent and a little bit more open-minded.

"All along, I've said the Eagles could go 2-14 and I wouldn't fire Andy Reid. I think he's too good a coach and he's done too much. Bill Cowher in Year 13 was 6-10 ... and two years later he's holding the Super Bowl trophy. I'm not saying that will happen with the Eagles. I don't know what's going to happen. ... I think Reid deserves an absolute rotten year."

Reid needs to go. 13 years and he gets another go around...don't think so.

He's a great planner but has too many flaws - drafting, game day adjustments, refuses to run the ball, teams have way too many stupid penalties, making Castilio the defensive coach.

Maybe the change will be good for him. Reid will find another job but he'll never win a super bowl as a head coach.

The Steelers brought in Mike Tomlin, The Packers Mike McCarthy...a good coach can be found.

His argument was immediately lost when he opened it with "There are 27 or 28 other cities that would love the record....." There it is, folks, that amazing "record" argument. A) The NFC East was HORRIBLE for McNabb/Reid's first five years B) What is Andy's record AGAINST WINNING TEAMS/COACHES? Marginal at best C) NFC Championship game RECORD, anyone? No, he doesn't deserve to stay. Comparing the decisions this man makes for his company with any of our lives, we would be fired. No, we would BE FIRED!!!! 4th and 1 against the Giants in your own zone, just getting the lead, and he goes for it?! WHY??????? Game over. EVERYONE knew the Bills were not going to snap the ball. Blame this on the player (you know, if you argue with surface b.s.) but COACHES should have been telling their players "DO NOT MOVE, THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO SNAP IT!" Nope. Not only that, but Reid called a time out when Buffalo was ABOUT TO PUNT TO DESEAN JACKSON!!!! 49ers anyone? Again, blame the players, but our OFFENSIVE LINE COACH who is now, for some unknown reason, calling defensive plays, DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO ADJUST!!! For god's sake, fire the man. He is incompetent and has lost his team.

I don't get the Gruden stuff. I would be fine if they hired him as the head coach but most knowledgable football people dont really think he is the answer in a situation like this. He walked into a great situation at Tampa Bay with an all-NFL defense in place. He was a solid coach but he struggled once he lost the original team he inherited. It's not the same as Reid and Rhodes because if you remember honestly, guys like Dawkins, Vincent, Dpuglas were on the 1998 Rhodes team that went 3-13. Tampa Bay had a top ranked defense under Dungy.

Mayock you are a moron!!! You are arguing that Philadelphia should settle for less than a championship. That a one game playoff loss year after year is more satisfying then a 7-9 record or a 6-10 record. Wrong Mayock. We know exactly what we have here in Reid, we know its not good enough for what we want. A championship. Mayock, you are just trying to endear yourself to Reid in order to get an interview. Thats disrespectful to the fans who have endured 13 years of this disappointment. Tell your TV audience the truth...over 80% of Philly fans want Reid gone.

For what? So he can promote Howie Roseman to offensive coordinator. Yeah right. Next!

I think the birds should hire a Head Coach who has not been a head coach before. They have access to the word behind the scenes as to who among the Assistant coaches is thought to be head coach material. Go out ang get a young, hungry coach and pair him up with a veteran GM/Player personnel guy. Bring in a solid Coordinator for which ever side of the ball is not his forte. Just don't go the retread route. If Cowher or Gruden had the passion necessary to be successful at this point in their careers, they wouldn't be on TV looking so fat and satisfied.

Mayock, good thing this game is not in Philly because we would run your arse out of town with the fat boy. Better be careful with what you say on air...Philly will remember...you will hear their wrath when you do a Philly game here.

Reid should have left with McNabb. His gadget BS offense won't ever win a damn thing and this defense is a joke. Their drafts have been a disaster as well. The talent thats coem and gone over the past 10 years should have won at least 1 SB ring. Oh well, i gave up on this team years ago, somebody call me when the Eaglests get a real coach and a linebacker that can make play. And thsi has to be the worst tackling defense in the history of football.

I would love to see Reid given another year to recognize the mistakes he has made and make the necessary adjustments, but he keeps making the same mistakes year after year. He doesn't acknowledge his mistakes. He still tries to put square pegs in round holes. He will most likely return as the HC next season, but it will be more of the same. I have totally given up on this team. As long as Reid is running the show, the Eagles will never get over the hump.

I for one am tired of good regular season records. We're like the Atlanta Braves of the NFL. Dude's been here 12 years and one Super Bowl appearance? Naw, just get your junkie kids and get the heck out of town and take your O-line coach with you.

there are 27 or 28 other NFL citieis that would give anything to have " there are 27 or 28 other NFL cities that would give anything to have had the record Andy Reid has had the last 12 years..."

And in twelve years ask those '27 or 28 other NFL cities' how happy they are when they haven't won squat and blew tons of drafts.

Maylock is kissing Reid's fat behind ...again....he brings up the old Cowher comparison again...how about comparing Reid to Tomlin who has won a Super Bowl in only his SECOND YEAR... or McCarthy who has won a Super Bowl in his FOURTH YEAR and maybe again this season ...or Sean Peyton who has won a Super Bowl in his FOURTH YEAR and maybe again this season... How about Harbaugh who was coaching a COLLEGE team last season, and now his 49ers are in FIRST PLACE...Andy Reid has ZERO Super Bowl wins in THIRTEEN YEARS...YIKES...and now Reid has the most talented DREAM TEAM and yet Reid is in LAST PLACE...no more excuses for Reid by his media buddies....Eagles fans want to FIRE REID..period.
