Mayock: Reid deserves to remain Eagles coach

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock concedes some trepidation about calling Thursday night's game between the Eagles and Seattle.
A Haverford School graduate and Newtown Square resident, Mayock said he is a little bit nervous about how to explain the current situation in Philadelphia to a national audience.
"I'm excited about doing a hometown game," he told Sports Illustrated's Peter King during a podcast this week. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. A part of me feels a little nervous about how to conveny what's going in Philadelphia and what the fair thing is and what's going to happen here next year and all those things. There is a lot more than meets the eye and I think it has to be handled with respect."
As for next year, though, Mayock is among those who think Andy Reid deserves to keep his job and return for another season.
"Philadelphia is a passionate city. I grew up here in West Philadelphia and I can say that. I understand it. It's Super Bowl win or bust. That's the attitude and I get it.
"What I try to tell people all the time is, there are 27 or 28 other NFL citieis that would give anything to have had the record Andy Reid has had the last 12 years. It seems like every year, he's in the final 4 or the final 6. The analogy I use is if you had 32 salesmen in the company and you have on guy who's a star but not a superstar and every year he finishes in the top 3, 4,5, are you going to fire him or pat him on the back and tell him to keep working hard and trying to get him to No. 1 ... They've got 5 games left, and think you find out a lot about people in these last five weeks. There are going to be some people that bail and there are going to be some peope that have just signed contracts and are new to town and don't really care and are gonig look around and say the grass is greener. We are going to find out a lot about exactly who cares and who doesn't in this organization over the next five games.
"I think Andy Reid deserves a second go-round ... May there be some changes in that staff? Maybe. At the end of the day, I think this guy deserves the opportunity to work it out moving forward."
As for King's view, "I've always thought if the players are still listening to you, if you're runnig a controlled ship, you're fine. You can withstand a real bad year, which is what they're going through this year. If you start having coaches arguing on the sidelines and have to bench your star receiver because you sense he's maybe not trying or giving it 100 percent, now my thought is a little bit difrerent and a little bit more open-minded.
"All along, I've said the Eagles could go 2-14 and I wouldn't fire Andy Reid. I think he's too good a coach and he's done too much. Bill Cowher in Year 13 was 6-10 ... and two years later he's holding the Super Bowl trophy. I'm not saying that will happen with the Eagles. I don't know what's going to happen. ... I think Reid deserves an absolute rotten year."

- I remember when I first started to be an Eagles fan like you. Since you are new to being an Eagles fan, I willl give you the short lesson on how it could be much worse. You;ll have to research some of the particuliars. 1966-1978. Bookend 9 win seasons, filled 12 years of 2-5 wins. The Swamp Fox yearsin 1980's. The Eagles were so putrid, for so long, that the fans to this day believe that the Buddy Ryan years(o'fer his life in playoff games as HC) were some kind of golden age. The Ray Rhodes era(punctuatred by rape analogies and a bend and break defense run by Emmit "Otter" Thomas. The highlight between the 1960 and Reid era you ask? That would be 1980 SB team that watched Kenny"bnot quite the King" take like the second play from scrimmage 77 yards and the slaughter was on. At least Reid's team had the lead at the half until the defense started to wilt.
UncleStosh - He has not has a good draft in 10 years? I guess crack is you drug a choice cause you are crazy. Mcoy, maclin, djax, Kolb(we got something for him) those are just our first pick of those drafts. Now, the problem is they need to do better on drafting defense, but to say he hasn't had a good draft in 10 years. DUMB.

Mayock and King are entitled to their opinions. My opinion is that Andy's flaws will prevent him from ever winning a Super Bowl. How many years did the fans call for better receivers? Remember the year when we didn't need a punt returner? How about his commitment to the running game? This year it's the linebackers(again) and the failed experiment of making your offensive line coach your defensive coordinator. Time's yours Andy, pleaes spend it in another city. Sheriff Bart
Mayock thinks Reid deserves a second chance? Reid has had 13 second chances. He's an average coach who inflated his wins with Jim Johnson's defense. Reid thinks Castillio is a DC - which should tell everybody how burned out Reid is. Since JJ's passing, Reids teams have gotten worse every year. ej610
What does Reid have on the national guys? Pictures? This year isn't anyone else's fault but his. He chose the defensive coach. He chose the draft picks. Why would you give hom another chance? NO ONE would have chosen castillo as d coach. Reid won't get a big name d coach because he is afriad of his job. He could have chosen any number of QUALIFIED defensive coaches. He chose castillo and first year coahces, caldwell and zordich. He and he alone deserve the fate of getting axed! jtcigar
And Mayak loses credibility as he implies it is okay to be an "also ran" rather than a winner of the only thing that counts...It is guys like him who beleive in mediocrity that destroy the american dream....a nation of sheep who jsut accept being average....be it sports or politics or jobs.....sports or anything exist in popularity because it defines who is best....be it in a game, a league, or a championship. It is the one area that cannot be denied and we love it because there is a true number one....and if Mayock wants to play poitics with his comments fine....but the truth is failure is just that.....and never being number one in 13 years says it all.....How hard is that to comprehend Mike ??? "Second go around"....try 13 go arounds.....Stop with the pablum Mike....If you are not winning viewers you will be gone and it wont take the network 3 years (not 13) of poor ratings to fire you.....Hello Mike.... nuggett
Finally one analyst gets it as do 70% of the fans on Eagles FB (a much better barometer than the 2-3 Gonzopologist Reid haters that post here under 12 different aliases). eaglesfan
Correct. His records speaks for itself and the whiners are wrong, period. jjthree
Andy is not going anywhere until the end of next season IMO. Jeff Lurie will give him the benefit of the doubt until then. Another embarrassing season and then he will leave on his own accord. Bobphxville
I have always maintained that when it's time for Reid to go, Lurie and Banner would be the last to know. I still feel that way. There are going to be a ton of disappointed Eagles fans on January 2, and not because of the Eagles final record, but because of a press conference that will never arrive. As long as Lurie owns the team, there will never be a Lombardi Trophy for the Eagles. drbob1
Everyone who dislikes Reid...take a look around the league...not many better...if he gets fired, which I doubt, he will have a job next year if he wants it. Maybe Miami. mlwmlw- Maybe Andy Reid needs to move on to another team.A change of scenery might do him good.It would give all the doubters a chance to see if their accusations of;poor clock management, total disinterest in the defensive side of the game,an obsession with the passing game to the detriment of all other aspects of the offense are deserved.I feel that these shortcomings are related and are due to his philosophy.

Andy is a good coach, but one with fatal flaws that doom the team's chances for a super bowl every year. For example his emphasis on small and quick player gives him an exciting team, but one that loses to physical teams and well prepared teams consistently. His 13 year continuing ignorance of the importance of a running game to protect the team's defense is inexcusable. this year is exceptionally inexcusable with McCoy on his team. His continued philosophy, which portrays the linebacker position as not important, will contibute to his team's demise every year. Mr Mayock, you are WRONG! miket47- DESERVES got nothing to do with it!
FIRE ANDY ***** FIRE ANDY *****
13 YEARS & NO Super Bowl's (how many did Lurie promise??) desjones
In firing a coach, no consideration is ever given to who's going to replace him. Will the replacement be better? In this case, the answer is yes! Gruden and Philadelphia are made for each other. And there are some other good candidates out there currently. Reid is competent, but he has lost his edge, this much was clear against New England. The Eagles will be a better team if Gruden is their coach next year. Baggio
