Casey Matthews responds to fans' daggers

POSTED: Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 3:52 PM
Casey Matthews isn't a fan of "rough" Eagles fans. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

It has been a rough rookie season for Casey Matthews.

Thrown into the fire immediately as the starting middle linebacker, coming off an offseason with no playbook to learn, no OTAs and a defense struggling with all its new parts.

Matthews took a lot of heat, and probably unfairly.

One thing he might know now that he didn't figure a few days ago is that criticizing the fans does not sit well with ... the fans.

Matthews took to Twitter today with a series of tweets trying to clarify/make amends for comments he made yesterday to Tim McManus of Philly Sports Daily.

Writes McManus:

Now that he has taken a step back, has he come to terms with the fans?

“Have I come to terms?” he asked.

Do you understand them?

“No. I don’t think anyone will ever understand these fans. When we win they love you but when we lose it gets rough. That’s just how it is here. It’s like that in some other places, but not to this extent. Hey, just win and keep them happy.”

So you’re not exactly feeling warm and fuzzy towards Eagles nation…

“Some of them but not running off the field after a loss — not those fans. They think they know me,” Matthews said tersely.

Here was Matthews today in a series of tweets after the reaction to his initial comments:

"Setting the record straight, I appreciate the passion and loyalty that ALL Eagle Fans have. I'm just saying it's tough to hear boos at home. And I understand why you guys are all frustrated. We've been in a slump but we will get this thing rolling and give you something to cheer 4. But we need the support from the whole #EaglesNation and finish strong."

There is a complete lack of veteran leadership on this team. If there was they would of explained to him how things are done here in Philly.

Clay doesn't understand this frustration goes back 13 years with the Andy Reid dog and pony show. It is boiling over and has nothing to do with him but he should just shut his trap and play hard. The coaches put in a bad situation that he was guaranteed to fail with by starting in the first few games.

You're a pro now and you get paid to win. We boo because we care. Win and you'll get our support - ask the Phillies.

Many Philly fans don't understand that true fans are their through thick and thin. It would be one thing if our fans started acting like this recently, but we've always brought a lot of negativity. It doesn't matter if we've won no Super Bowls or 10 bringing negative energy doesn't help anybody. Loud and obnoxious does not equal "tough and knowledgable" I'm sick of people hiding behind the "tough fans" label and feeling that it excuses people whining, complaining, and being obnoxious.

No, a true idiot blindly follows a failing team.

Its one thing to lose a game or a season because the other team just got lucky, or had a hot player, or the breaks just went their way.

The Eagles lose by design, they're a team built on a bargain, they're an illusion. Supporting the mess that is the Eagles this year has nothing to do with being a fan, it has a lot to do with blind allegiance to a money-making business.

One thing EVERY new player that comes to play for the Eagles MUST remember about the passionate fans of our team -
    WE HAVE WON ZERO SUPERBOWLS
    The Jints have 3, the Deadskins have 3, the hated Couwturds have 5;
    WE HAVE ZERO
Even the Aints and the 0-14 Bucs have at least one SB.
    WE HAVE ZERO

Well, he's right. Not OTA's. No playbook. Rookie DC. The wide 9. Jury's still out on this guy as far as I'm concerned.

The truth hurts. The fans have turned The Linc into a home-field disadvantage. Andy and Co. would probably make the playoffs if they played every game on the road. Nice going Eagles fans. You want to win a freaking Championship for the first time since 1960...try becoming a fanbase that the team wants to put in 110% and overachieve for (like the Packers).

These fans pay about $100 a ticket, plus a bundle to park and purchase food, drinks, jersies, etc. For the thousands of dollars they speend each year, they would like to see the team win once in a while. 1-9 going back to last year. That's a disgrace. eaglefan is one of those suck-up "good games, boys" guys who has probably never bought a ticket in his life. Hey, it wasn't that long ago that the Packers weren't winning and they booed their beloved Bart Starr when he was coach. They killed Dan Devine's dog when he didn't win. This team has no guts and Reid is the worst game-day coach in the NFL. Every other team didn't have an off-season, either, so how come they are better, like the 49ers who brought in a new coach from the college ranks, no less? It's not giving the team the fanbase it can be proud of, it is the team giving the effort that the fans, who pay their salaries, something to be proud of.

Amen mikey. little eagle fan here is clueless. people like him should move to somewhere nice and fair like los angeles who is always polite and nice, but when thier teams suck they just stop showing up and go back to surfing and shoping. we love our teams but we hate losers and sitting in a cold rainy vet and booing for an 0-14 team is the way it is here. go to the game on sunday or go do what? by the way, los angeles doesn't have a football team.

Because the fans know then end result. We have watched our coach make puzzling assistant hires, questionable draft selections and paying the wrong free agents while not taking care of his own. Maybe if this was Andy's second season you would see the fan base reacting differently. Hope holds most fan bases together, right now we have none to be honest. There is no reason to believe Andy will hire the right coaches, draft the right players and make good free agent additions. The Packer's fanbase, who OWN part of the team, wouldn't tolerate this mess. They didn't tolerate it in 1968-1991 when the Packers had 5 winning seasons in those 24 years..

So what you are saying is...blindly cheer for them, even if the product is getting worse every year...No matter how frustrated you get, always put on a smile and a happy face so that these guys can feel better about their jobs? right?

Wow, I think the whole world has got it wrong. When Apple puts those buggy products and all the returns and complaints come in, those consumers should instead be buying even more bugged products and sending in thank you letters?

Cause it's not the end product, it's all about making them feel good, right?

Ahh gee, how far in technology this world would be with that mindset...

Truth is, there is no profession, aside from the weatherman, that can withstand so much abuse of privileges and the employee still keep their job.

Where would your job, and your bosses job be, if every week you had to report to the consumer that you just gotta do better? Don't ya think eventually your business would collapse, or at the least your position would be?

One thing this guy fails to realize is that we do tolerate failure, but we only do it when it's met with max effort. End of story.
