Marty: Foles 'tough man' with great strengths

It's unlikely that Marty Mornhinweg will continue to be entrusted with the development of Nick Foles beyond this week, but the Eagles' offensive coordinator made it clear Thursday he feels the rookie quarterback has promise.

"You have to give him great credit" for throwing for 188 yards in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Redskins with a hairline fracture in his throwing hand, Mornhinweg said. "If you've tried to throw a ball with a broken hand, you know what that feels like. So he's a tough man. He's got some great, great strengths. He got some great experience this year, which is invaluable ... I know this -- he's got an excellent future in this league, because of all of these strengths that he has."

Foles will miss the season finale at the Giants because of the injury. Mornhinweg said Michael Vick, scheduled to start for the first time since suffering a concussion Nov. 11, looks "sharp, crisp. I suspect he'll play at a high level" against the Giants.

Asked to autopsy the season, Mornhinweg referred to close losses, and then snowballing injuries. "There's a line you cross" with injuries, he said.

"It looked like we were a pretty good football team" at 3-1, Mornhinweg said. "Then some things happened."

Special teams coordinator Bobby April said Bryce Brown was just OK in his second outing as kick returner, last week against the Redskins. April said he thinks Brown can be good with experience.

April said kicker Alex Henery, who made 22 field goals in a row at one point, probably didn't get more Pro Bowl consideration because he hasn't had chances to make long, dramatic game-winners.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said he felt rookie DT Fletcher Cox was really coming on when he suffered a concussion Sunday that almost certainly will keep Cox out of the season finale.

I was impressed with Foles the first time I seen him in a pre season game. Just the way he carried himself, he didn't look like a rookie. I wasn't foolish enough to believe he wouldn't have any bumps if he played in any regular season games, and because of injury, he did have to play. He played well at times, other times he disappointed me, but overall I believe he has the qualities; leadership, talent, smarts and toughness to be a real good NFL QB.

Foles has only played in 5 NFL games ever, and he already had a BETTER season than McNabb, Aikman and Peyton Manning, WOW...Foles is only 23 years old and will keep getting better every game he plays...Foles will be an outstanding Eagles QB for many years.

@SilliBilli, you're comment is right on. I watched the Cowboys flounder in Aikmans' first year and he looked confused and distraught a bunch more than I've seen out of Foles. He may not have the college resume Aikman had and he may not be a winner either; but it won't be because he's overwhelmed by the stage he finds himself upon. He has confidence and poise; few rookie qbs possess those traits at the same level. No one will know whether he works out longer term based on this size of a sample. What he hasn't done was wow everybody, nor has he given no hope that he can play in the NFL. He will need more time and we will have to be patient unless Howie drafts a guy in the first round and Foles becomes the backup. Meantime we should all just chill out and let things unfold for him. As I said, I have a good feeling about him being successful.

I enjoyed reading that Bobby April, who has gotten worse with experience, says Bryce Brown will improve with experience. Bobby's opinions at this point are even less relevant than Marty's.

I've been watching the Eagles since 1958 and was at the 1960 Championship Game. After watching Van Brocklyn, Jurgensen, Jaws, and all the QB's that have played in this town, I believe that Foles IS A QB. Thinks like one, acts like one, etc. Give the kid a chance with a real coach, a real offensive coordinator, and a real defense. QB is important, but defense wins championships. Just ask Chuck Bednarick.

Les is a great writer. But Mornhinwheg and April's opinions on these players won't be worth two cents by next week.

With no standout in the draft I'm more than willing to see what he can do in 2013. If Eagles are smart they should load up draft picks for 2014. If Foles doesn't work out maybe there will be an emerging QB in the following years draft they could move and obtain.

"It looked like we were a pretty good football team" at 3-1, Mornhinweg said.

Total margin of victory in those three games: 4 points. Yeah, Marty, you guys were cookin'.

Foles looks like he could be a good qb but he doesn't look like a superstar. Ask yourself this. At this point who would you rather have? Griffin luck Wilson or foles. It's not even close. He could wind up being about as good as Sam Bradford which is nothing to get excited about.

I think Foles looks great. Last week he kept them in the game and nearly brought them back against one of the current elite teams in football. If people are expecting wins with an historically bad defense- until Washburn was fired the defense looked like a skeleton passing drill- , poor special teams, an offensive line in disarray and Dropsy McFumbles at running back, they are missing the mark. The only threat to Foles succeeding in Philadelphia is if Lurie hires another system coach, rather than a football coach who gameplans around his talent.

Does anyone really trust MORONweg's evaluation skills?

Marty said the same of Kolb and Kalfka, woooohoooo. Remember Kolb was Texas tough now here comes another Texas tough guy let's see how long he lasts. Better draft Geno or Collin thats the Eagles best bet.
