Marty: Foles 'tough man' with great strengths

POSTED: Thursday, December 27, 2012, 1:12 PM

It's unlikely that Marty Mornhinweg will continue to be entrusted with the development of Nick Foles beyond this week, but the Eagles' offensive coordinator made it clear Thursday he feels the rookie quarterback has promise.

"You have to give him great credit" for throwing for 188 yards in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Redskins with a hairline fracture in his throwing hand, Mornhinweg said. "If you've tried to throw a ball with a broken hand, you know what that feels like. So he's a tough man. He's got some great, great strengths. He got some great experience this year, which is invaluable ... I know this -- he's got an excellent future in this league, because of all of these strengths that he has."

Foles will miss the season finale at the Giants because of the injury. Mornhinweg said Michael Vick, scheduled to start for the first time since suffering a concussion Nov. 11, looks "sharp, crisp. I suspect he'll play at a high level" against the Giants.

Asked to autopsy the season, Mornhinweg referred to close losses, and then snowballing injuries. "There's a line you cross" with injuries, he said.

"It looked like we were a pretty good football team" at 3-1, Mornhinweg said. "Then some things happened."

Special teams coordinator Bobby April said Bryce Brown was just OK in his second outing as kick returner, last week against the Redskins. April said he thinks Brown can be good with experience.

April said kicker Alex Henery, who made 22 field goals in a row at one point, probably didn't get more Pro Bowl consideration because he hasn't had chances to make long, dramatic game-winners.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said he felt rookie DT Fletcher Cox was really coming on when he suffered a concussion Sunday that almost certainly will keep Cox out of the season finale.

Nick Foles is the real deal. We should be truly stoked that the Eagles were able to get him to secure a future for the most important position in football. We'll need to see him next year to start to use the term franchise quarterback, but he has demonstrated that he is a great young quarterback with a very bright future. A full off season and year as the number one will allow him to show that he can be one of the greatest quarterbacks in Eagles history. Now the Eagles can focus on all the other problems, resting assured that the QB position is looking very solid for many years to come.

He gets the benifit of modest expectations but yes his height giving him the ability to continuously scan the fields as well as find throwing lanes and field presence are good qualities

I'm a believer in the kid! My concern is who's going to choose the next coach. I want to see Ron Jaworksi as VP of Football Operations with full control of football decisions. HIRE JAWS FIRST is a facebook page where you can show support for the idea if you agree. Please stop by, give it a like and talk to fan friends about this idea. Thanks!

Sorry to disturb you, but I don't think I'll change my point of view based on your disagreement.

Ha, Ha, Ha! Real deal? LOL! Foles couldn't win in college, has one total NFL win and now he is Terry Bradshaw or Tom Brady? Please! Nice kid but Foles can't play dead! In Philly, any non-Black QB will do. Foles will be loved if Eagles lose every game and pro bowl QBs will be hated no matter how well they play or how many more games they win than Foles.

My mistake...his sophomore year he beat Stanford, USC and Oregon...losses to Nebraska and Iowa, and of course he did lose to Oklahoma State with Dan Weeden as QB a few time also in his career.

Morninweg praising Foles means absolutely nothing.

Kid, get out of town as fast as you can because the writers and many fans will never accept you here.

In fact, if you put a team together in any sport of the guys who got out of town and made it big, versus the ones who stayed, the guys who left would have many, many, more championship rings than the guys who stayed.

Looks like most of you are new to football. Well, here's a little history lesson. Troy Aikman went 1-15 as a starter his first year. Lets give Foles a chance behind a healthy offensive line and skill position players. If he doesn't pass Vick in production with a full complement, I'd be very surprised. Your welcome. Truth speaker out! Church.

lbg: that one win was one more last second win than No. 5 had in his whole career. Just saying. And it could have been 2 wins if some two week TE wasnt on the receiving end of that touchdown pass last week.

I for one believe that we still dont have quite enough information on the kid to know if he is going to be a great or Super Bowl winning QB. But then again, did anyone expect Eli to win 2? So we should reserve judgement until the kid has a full season of starts under him.
