Maclin's Ties to Docs Might Explain Trip
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
It's really strange to hear from WIP and Channel 10's Howard Eskin that Jeremy Maclin has returned home to St. Louis for medical tests. (A team spokesman subsequently confirmed the report.) Andy Reid has been talking about Maclin undergoing tests for more than a week, up at Eagles camp in Lehigh. Hard to conceive of any illness the Philadelphia medical community isn't sufficient to diagnose and treat.
But Maclin, the Eagles' top receiver last season, is from the suburbs of St. Louis, and you'll recall that he was more or less raised by the family of a youth football coach, Dr. Jeff Parres. Parres is a urologist, so I kinda doubt he's the one doing the tests right now, but obviously, Parres has deep connections in the medical community there, and no doubt, there are friends/associates he wants to assess this.
Those friends/associates had plenty of time to assess during the roughly six months from the time Maclin said he first fell ill with what he has described as a "mono-like" illness and when he reported to camp, but maybe the situation has changed somehow. Maybe there's a different diagnosis or possible direction the case has taken, that Maclin and Parres would like to double-check with the guys back home.
This is all speculation, because the team has never said what doctors think is wrong with Maclin or what the prognosis is. Maclin and team sources have denied dire rumors floating around the internet about life-threatening illnesses. (Not gonna repeat those here. You can probably guess.)
Team sources denied the signing of ex-Giants receiver Steve Smith Wednesday had anything to do with Maclin's situation. This makes sense in a way, because Smith, recovering from microfracture surgery, won't be playing anytime soon. But the Eagles had to know Maclin was going home for more tests when they signed Smith, even if they weren't willing to say so.
Right now, the significance of Maclin returning to St. Louis is this -- as long as he was at Lehigh, you figured he was trying to get ready to practice and might be out on the field soon. Now, it seems obvious that is not the case, that we are, if not back at square one, very close to that.
The Eagles open the regular season a month from today. In St. Louis, by the way. Let's hope Maclin flies there with them.
There we go! Possibly some good news. I figured he went there for a family doctor or some sort, but medical ties with the family is good news too. This would be different and nerve-racking if was heading to a random city. colahead420
Forget football. I hope Maclin is okay. 5NOT4
I hope that he his mood remains upbeat and that the testing proves that its something routine and treatable, if anything at all. He's got his whole life ahead of him. Praying for you Jeremy! nceagle
It's kind of ridiculously inexplicable that the Eagles will give no info on this. They're basically asking the Internet to go crazy with rumors of leprosy and Bubonic plague. CharlesShackleford- As others have already said, this is legally protected health information. The Eagles nor anyone else can disclose without the patient's authorization. Sometimes the condition is sensitive for a variety of reasons. For example it might be embarrassing or it may have financial implications with respect to what is covered for insurance purposes etc. Contrary to what you may think you're entitled to, the fact of the matter is your not entitled to sh$t.
DennyP - Agreed,, for all of the above reasons and one more,, just plain respect for privacy. It may be true that in this age of Tattler and scandle sheets it is unusual for people to respect the rights of others, but I for one agree with this decision.

Hope everything goes alright, we need you JMac, hope you get well soon. cesar20
I hate speculating, but "Mono like" and heading to St Louis says to me he has a blood disorder and the experts where he could receive treatment are much closer to home where he will need to recover. I really hope I'm wrong, but I'm betting he's sick. Again, I really hope I'm wrong. Truth Become
How is this ridiculously inexplicable? He has an illness unrelated to football. The Eagles can't disclose this information lest they be subject to HIPAA violations. sfactor
@CharlesShackleford...none of your business! cous76
There's a good reason why the Eagles are saying nothing about this. Even though he's a professional athlete Jeremy Maclin is entitled to the same kind of privacy about his medical condition that you and I would expect to receive. If and when this affects his ability to perform on the field we might be entitled to some of the details. Even then, it should be up to Maclin what gets disclosed about his medical history. Just because we buy the tickets that pay his salary doesn't give us the right to snoop into his private life. Let's hope for the best and wait to see what happens. Al Wilson

Just get well JMac adipaolo
Even if his condition is treated and he gets well soon, he won't be in football shape for a while, so we can figure on starting the season without him. That said, the most important thing is to get well. If playing football comes after that, it's a second blessing. dlscholt
God Bless Jeremy Maclin and his family! He is in OUR prayers. This is a private family matter and NONE of our business. Let the idiots on the internet continue to speculate. Thats what they do. Props to the Eagles for handling the way they are handling it. dudega- ---dudega----in America we have freedom of speech----I am quite sure you are aware of that fact.
-- Just another internet 'idiot. Romus
The eagles cannot release the information of his treatment w/o Maclin's consent. They would be violating laws about confidentiality because the injury is not football related. Also they may be violating a CBA clause by releasing confidential information.

My take on this is that Jeremy wanted to keep his heath issue(s) private and that the Eagles are going to respect that. Neither the Eagles or Jeremy Maclin owe any of us an explanation. All will be revealed in due time, Or not! Everyone should just chill!!! maurysline
by not being forthright about his illness, the eagles and macklin are only fueling these wild rumors...c'mon,come clean...nothing is sacred anymore so why all the mystery??? jabac- I am sure his family has ties to the staff at Washington Univ - St. Louis which is one of the top 3 medical research institutions in the country. Hopefully for his sake he will get answers soon and for the rest of us wait patiently for him to get better. rvb2321
5NOT4, I'm with you. Let's put football aside for the time being, and hope they simply figure out what's ailing Jeremy. mikecraud
If it was routine and treatable then they would NOT have sent him to St Louis. Please use some logic or at least common sense when formulating opinions.
There something very wrong here with Maklin, and I suspect his Dr. father (a Urologist) knows exactly what it is, and for the last 6 months they were hoping it would return to submission.
My guess is that Macklin is battling some form of lower intenstinal disorder (Ulcerative colitis, Chrons etc..) because these diseases come and go and you lose a great deal of weight rapidly, devlop skin sores and then recover again quickly until the next bout a year or two later. This could also be a diabetic reaction, but that is highly doubtful because the Eagles staff would have easily corrected for that after blood-sugar tests.
The boy is obviously very sick and his family may have been hiding it for these 6 months in the hopes it would go back into remmission. I would have hid it too from the Eagles, since they would have been forced under CBA to negotiate a medical buyout of the remainder of his contract. The boy wants to play so he keeps his mouth shut about his medical history. You have to admire is courage, but its gone past that stage now, because apparently its not getting better.
First we lose Patterson to what now appears to be a career ending injury; that man will NEVER play again in the NFL and its highly doubtful that any team would risk another fiasco like the Corey Springer civil law suit that haunted the Vikings these last ten years and was a black eye for the League.
Patterson was a good player but not good enough for any team to take that sort of risk. The only thing uncertain about BOTH of these affairs is whether or not their families were hiding their disorders from Eagles medical staff.
get well guys and forget about football, its just a game. sdeens
Maclin is a class act and a high quality young man in addition to his abilities as a football player. I certainly wish him all the best and hope that whatever this is, it gets diagnosed and cured. Zee77- Get well soon, Jeremy.
Could have an enlarged spleen, with some liver and kidney ailments as some critical side effects of mononucleosis. Cannot afford to have trauma to the spleen. Romus
randy moss, line one.. snakeplissken
sign Randy Moss. sedale- sdeens I agree with you that football is secondary in this case and we want him to get well again. But your ridiculous differential diagnoses of ulcerative colitis and diabetes as causes, and your remission hypothesis, are completely baseless and inappropriate. Please don't start your medical career on bulletin boards and stick to your get well wishes. Bob1
Smith hurt, Maclin sick, Jackson mad, Avant busy. camasbud
all you holy rollers saying the eagles or maclin don't owe us any explanation are full of it. Nobody wants to see anybody in serious danger and our prayers do go out to him if he is in some kind of trouble. However, both him and the Eagles do owe us who pay their salaries and his with our hard earned money. So stick your sentiment and I say they both should end the speculation and reveal the true severity of things. Diagnosis & Prognosis!!!!!!!! skindome
This is all ridiculous. Frankly, it's none of our freaking business. He didn't suffer a football-related injury. He has some sort of illness and, when they figure out what it is, they'll tell us. I really don't see the point in the local media asking and talking about every single day. OBVIOUSLY, they aren't going to tell us anything until they know for sure. They've made that pretty clear. Not sure why the local media keeps beating this dead horse. When there's something to report, you'll know about it. Until then, you guys should be spending your time on the other 1,000 things you have to write about Eagles football right now. JimG- skindome, you're a moron. Your position is since we're buying tickets and merchandise that goes to player's salaries we should be privy to personal medical records. Using that same argument we should have access to medical records of any employee of auto companies afterall we're buying the cars which ultimately pay their salaries. We should have accesss to medical records of all local, state and federal govt employees because we pay their salaries. Sounds ridiculous huh? So do you
Parasite, I tell you, Parasite. Could have gotten from bad BBQ or from food from a trip he may have taken. Depending on what kind it is, it may be difficult to diagnose and treat. LGbalsac
I had mono like symptoms, that hit me all of a sudden, with 104*f , chills/sweats, sore throat, persistent cough, dropped 20lbs in about two weeks and all i did was sleep. It started May 24th and it lasted about four weeks. I still get tired easy, but not as bad as it was..they ran about 100 different tests, with no luck finding a "name" sweetpea8077
But the NFL does require teams to supply injury lists prior to any game regardless if it is football related or not.
Why? Vegas baby... LA Mike
I don't think the media has been beating Maclin's illness to death at all. They appear to report on it only when something changes, like the guy missing a game and going back to Missouri. calm weather
