Punt Return Problem

Punt Return Problem

Well, the immortal Jeremy Edelman just took a Sav Rocca punt back 75 yards, mostly down the right sideline, and it's 14-3. This was bad in all sorts of ways. First, Edelman got nothing on the return, initally, Leonard Weaver lassoing him, but flags flew becasuse the Birds didn't have enough men on the line of scrimmage and Rocca had to punt again. This time, Sean Jones ran past Edelman, and nobody else got a hand on him. The veins on new special teams coordinator Ted Daisher's neck seemed dangerously prominent, even if you weren't watching in high-def.

: Now the Eagles are on the board, down 7-3 after a 38-yard David Akers field goal. A dozen plays, 60 yards, pretty much the LeSean McCoy show. Young Shady gained 18 yards on 4 carries and went 19 with a nicely-executed screen. DeSean Jackson had the other two notable gains of the drive, 9 yards on an end around that went right and then left, 9 more on a sideline pass from scrambling Donovan McNabb.

Drive died when the new $60 million left tackle, Jason Peters, gave up a 4-yard sack on third and 9 to Tully Banta-Cain. Maybe the extra last name threw him off.

Birds then got the ball back when Sheldon Brown outfought Randy Moss for a long Brady offering down the left sideline.

Jeremy Maclin looked OK bringing the opening kickoff back 24 yards, not OK muffing his first punt return of the Eagles' preseason opener, at home against the Patriots. Luckily for the Eagles, Joselio Hanson recovered.

Not sure about Maclin as a punt returner -- he did this a little up at Lehigh, as well. Holding onto that ball is the most important part of the job, which pretty much explains Reno Mahe's career.

Eagles' first two possessiond didn't show much sync or timing. Thrown-together O-line looked OK. Leonard Weaver had a nice catch and ramble.

Pats' second possession, Asante Samuel was flagged for pass interference, reaching in and pinning former teammate Randy Moss's arm. Fifty-six yard gainer for rehabbed Tom Brady and his crew.

Bad drive for ex-Pats; Ellis Hobbs limped off after tackling Lawrence Maroney, after a 4-yard gain on third and 1.

Couple plays later, Brady had all day to wait for Chris Baker to come open at the goalline on his left, vs. Akeem Jordan. Touchdown New England, 7-0.
