Andrews Out; Westbrook In

POSTED: Friday, September 11, 2009, 1:43 PM

Right tackle Shawn Andrews did not practice Thursday or Friday and will not play in the Eagles' season openerShawn Andrews' back started hurting as the opener approached. Sunday at Carolina, Eagles coach Andy Reid said. Running back Brian Westbrook practiced Friday, despite having been listed on the inury report Thursday with a knee problem, and he will play, Reid said.

Winston Justice will start for Andrews, who missed the preseason with back problems but has been sympton-free lately. Reid said Andrews' back tightened up after Wednesday's workout, the first full practice of game week.

"Neither our people or Shawn feel like he can make it through this game," Reid said.

Justice last started on Sept. 30, 2007, at left tackle. He melted down completely, as Osi Umenyiora sacked Donovan McNabb a half-dozen times and the Giants notched 12 sacks for the evening. Justice has drawn praise this preseason, however, filling in for Andrews on the right side.

"I thought one of the real positives coming out of camp was Winston Justice and how he played," Reid said.

Westbrook's work Friday was limited because the Eagles were indoors, on the harder artificial surface, Reid said.

"He'll be fine," Reid said.

Reid did not want to discuss how former right tackle Jon Runyan looked when the Eagles brought him in for a workout Thursday morning; in fact, Reid danced around a question about whether the team knew about Andrews' problem when it scheduled the session with Runyan.

"I'm not going to get into how he looked," Reid said of Runyan, a 35-year-old free agent who is coming off microfracture surgery. "We haven't done anything there."

Runyan was scheduled to work out for the Bills today.

brian is absolutely right. he only way he can collect his money is by faking an injury which nobody can prove otherwise. He cannot fake a broken bone etc. The best thing is back spasms before they cannot be verified. You have to go by what the patient says. Well everyone knows Shawn's game now. Just let him go....

Let's see, we have no right tackle, no middle linebacker, and no free safety but hey, we're rehabbing Mike Vick back into society and we're UNDER THE CAP!!!

What a jerk. We are in the worst economic situation is years and we have to hear about this guys "back" issues. We have brick layers and other hard working people who go to work and suck it up with injuries to their hands, backs, necks, etc. But, this Lazy Bass--turd can't go one day a week. Save the whole back problems can flare up argument. This guy is a joke and a jerk.

Can the Eagles please cut Andrews now? He is a complete nut-job and should be put on meds. He will never play again... he is mentally disabled. The only competition he is suited to play in is the special olympics.

All you who are saying "cut him" understand that his salary and contract are guaranteed for this season since he made the 53 man roster? He will get his millions, regardless.

After Sunday it will be panic in the streets. The big kid is turning out to be the big dud. He's killing team morale. Things never start out good for the Eagles to start a season. 0-1 sucks

Agreed Shawn has to go, IR for now, bring back Runyan and pick up a young stud off somebody's practice squad. Iggles "brain trust" is going for all the marbles this season; hence Vick plus this new tight end (cutting Curtis!?). But they should wake up and smell the injuries Right Now, before the season implodes.
