Lurie Had Reservations About Castillo Promotion Last Year
Paul Domowitch, Daily News NFL Columnist
Eagles owner Jeff Lurie admitted Tuesday that he had serious reservations about Andy Reid’s decision to promote his longtime offensive line coach, Juan Castillo, to defensive coordinator last year.
``Yes, I did,’’ he said. ``But I let Andy make that call. I respected his decision. He felt it was the best thing to do at the time and I don’t interfere in that area.’’
And just to be clear, the decision Tuesday to fire Castillo six games into his second season as defensive coordinator also was Reid’s and Reid’s alone.
``I will never do that,’’ Lurie said when asked if he had anything to do with the decision to replace Castillo with secondary coach Todd Bowles. ``The way I operate, a coach is responsible for his staff. Succeed and fail based on who he chooses and his own performance. I don’t trigger that.’’
Lurie said he felt bad for Castillo.
``He preceded Andy,’’ he said. ``I’ve known his family since they were little kids. He’s done nothing but work really hard. Maybe he was put in an unfortunate position too early. That’s what I would say. That’s not Juan’s fault that he was put in that position too early.’’
Wrong again....smart owners will not sit back passively knowing that their employees are making a bad decision that will damage their organization...Lurie said he knew it was a bad decision, then he should have used his leadership for stopping this dumb decision which has damaged his organization....that's just common sense, owners don't just sit back while their employee is hurting their company...get real, what planet do you live on? I have little doubt that that Lurie's preference for keeping hands off and having stability will finally be pre-empted by his need to keep this team relevant in future years. Mediocrity is not the Gold Standard. I think that anything short of getting at least one round deep into the playoffs will cost Reid his job. dasher
Lurie is starting to see the light! JBinPA
An owner can do whatever he dam well pleases with his business and he hired a man to do the job....the sad part is he has given him 14 years to become a SB winner and AR has failed in that regard....the hard part of being and owner, a manager, a boss is the job resposibilty of firing someone and it is now time for Jeffery to be a real owner and get someone here who has a chance to do that.....AR's schemes, draft choices, talent selections, coaching selections and coaching has been a total failure in winning the only thing that counts (the gold standard of the NFL.....i.e. The Super Bowl...).....Time to do your job Jeffery as YOUR legacy is at risk at this moment.... nuggett
Jeff is developing the basis for an AR firing. Bobphxville
what adult with a brain wouldnt have had reservations about the decision? andy can get up there everyweek and say he takes full responsibility, because he never actually has to. so sick of it. jim715
Coach A's unit ranks around 15th in the NFL
Coach B's unit ranks around 28th in the NFL
Which coach gets shown the door? Obviously it's B, unless of course you're Andy Effen Reid. REVOLUTION- The fact that Lurie says its not Juan's fault that he failed is what interests me the most. Is he finally realizing that Reid's decisions are becoming more nd more absurd?
So Lurie don't mind paying Vick 100 million for being a mediocre quarterback. He is in favor of firing Castillo for having the 10th ranked defense in the league, but is behind Marty, Reid and Vick for having the 31st ranked team in the league. Yep, sounds like Jeffrey Lurie. mario1239
to JKard99 .. Cowboys & Redskins have beeb awesome. You have got to be kidding! Jerry jones & Synder are the reasons they both stink!! Jones & synder are both idiots who meddle without knowing the game. bill poore
.. confirms my long-held suspicion that Lurie actually wants perennial loosers in Philly.. He is a Boston elitist and has sabotaged all of our chances to be real Super Bowl contenders by keeping Reid past his expiration date... USAFirst1
Lurie should fire Reid, but then the compromising pics of Lurie and a few sheep will be made public the next day. So he'll never fire him. Tyrone Biggums
Lurie is one of the top 5 owners in all of sports, he has done nothing but put the eagles in position to win and stay out of matters he is not good at. Anyone who rips him apart doesn't know football. Wvu9494
Lurie is no dummy. He puts his leaders in position to succeed or fail on their own. That way, when the hammer is lowered, it's due to the lack of performance by his underlings. Lurie is definitely not an owner like Jerry Jones. He actually knows how to insulate himself from the daily decisions, thereby being able to lower the hammer on the underperformer (Reid) when it becomes necessary. The only problem I have with Lurie is that he gave Reid too much time to perform. ghost of callison
I met Lurie at a Chiefs game. I even got him to autograph my old Trotter Jersey just for the heck of it. He was nice enough I suppose. At any rate, he is absolutely right to stay out of the football decisions. I see him as leaps and bounds ahead of F***-Reggie-White Norman Braman. :( WestonF01
